I use an old IRR Shortback bergen in Khaki. Rarely do i put a 58 bottle in the one outside pouch.
I have a US Natmrines 3lt camelback bladder and bag. It has 2 corresponding size buckles that fit where rocket pouches do.
Or i just leave it in top of the collar and hold it doemwn with my lid works fine.
On thos pack. Because it has a 2way zip on top pocket, you could just use 1 end so it zips to back and just leave a bladder in there and run your hose to the front.

I got the mk 1 version about a year ago in OD green. I tend to agree with your experience of it : the materials, buckle, zips etc are good quality, the pouches and organisation they afford are brilliant and the carrying capacity is huge however, there are a few downsides. Due to size of the main pack it effectively places the 3 pouches and poncho pouch further away from your back. You mentioned that you needed to keep weight in this area down and that is certainly true but even with relatively light weight items it’s still a problem as the mass is still far away from your back and impacts on your centre of gravity. I found with a full pack it constantly felt it was pulling me backwards. The back length is also too short and the belt is around my middle rather than on my hips and there is little adjustment available. I know it’s designed for the military and would sit on top of the belt kit (the pack belt is removable for this reason) however, long gone are the days when I was wearing belt kit and I find not being able to take the weight of the pack on my hips properly means it’s all on the shoulders. The side pouches are huge, so much so that when fully packed it’s impossible to walk through a standard doorway wearing it which is a pain getting it out of the house in the first place plus it’s a bugger walking through dense woodland as it catches on trees and branches. I bought the yoke harness separately and use the side pouches as a day pack and either leave them empty or just shove them in the main pack until needed. All in all, if you are parachuting behind enemy lines for extended periods and need to carry food, water, ammunition, batteries, radios, NVGs, and all the other kit you need then this pack is what you need. For civy use / bushcraft, personally I find it a bit too big and I’d rather look for smaller, lighter kit options to fit in a smaller pack. For me, probably around 100 litres is enough.

@@kitpimp I served In the British Infantry so have experience in the packs I mentioned on a professional level. What you are saying is correct but only to a margin. It's recomended to size down on a PLCE for instance but only in some cases to allow for webbing. I'm 6ft 2 so fairly tall. I would most certainly not want to yomp a 60lb + bergen on a short back as the belt strap would be way too high and very uncomfortable. I've tabbed 1000's of miles in the set up with a long back ;)

Even though it looks a solid bit of kit. I'm not a fan of it, it looks way too big and cumbersome.
A decent bag for back at the FOB and living out of, or for sticking in the back of a vehicle in Helmand.
But for mooching about the hills in the UK for a few days, what on earth are you carrying in, where you would need a 150l?
To even fill a normal 120l PLCE bergen takes an awful lot of gear. So unless you're carrying in loads of specialist gear, like video recording equipment or bales of cocaine. I'm failing to see why anyone (civilian) would need so much space.
Now if the did a 3/4 size one, where the bergen was 60l, with zip on side pockets at 10l each. That would be ideal.

Yeah, all that weight so far from your back, can't be comfortable. Totally agree it should be a long back too. I have an OG long back and I find it more comfortable than the short backs that I have, especially with the side pockets on. End up too wide and bashing off of things, and with no belt kit on to help support it either. the short backs are just less comfortable.

A smaller version would be ideal, as I really do like the basha pouch and utility pouches. Around 90 - 100l with the pockets on. Somewhere in between the NI pack and this, with a padded waist belt.
