Hard to pick just one favorite, but I like "Wouldn't That Be Nice?" because I despise the way homeless people are treated as lesser than. I get the stink eye myself a lot because I'm often wearing dirty jeans and look a bit rough. I live off grid on 20 acres on a mountain with goats and chickens and go to town 2-4 times a month. I don't see the point of getting dolled up to go to the feed and grocery store. Last Summer, I went to the local pound because I had a dream that I found a Queensland Heeler there. I checked their website, and there was nothing close, but decided to check anyway. I saw him before I was parked, the skinny little blue heeler in a pen by himself. I was told he couldn't be adopted because he had "fear issues", and besides, "he's a coyote mix". NO, he's not! I love this breed, and he's a perfect stubby-tailed blue heeler, just very thin. He had been found "lurking" around the skateboard park, and reported as a coyote that someone had been shooting at (thankfully they missed). I don't accept "No" very well, so I explained I had experience with cattle dogs, so I was allowed to fill out an application to be a foster. I was accepted the next day, and came back to get him. He was so frightened, he had to be carried to my car. I watched his demeanor change as I drove the 10 miles up the mountain to the Lazy I Ranch, my little goat ranch way out in the sticks and told him he was home now. I sang to him all the way home to get him used to my voice (poor fella). Some Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff, and of course, Blaze Foley! I was singing "Clay Pigeons" when we pulled up the dirt driveway and he saw the goats for the first time. I laughed and said, "I guess you found that lady with two or three "kids", huh? That's when I knew his name had to be "Blaze". This dog has been through some things, and so have I. He's my best friend now and loves riding shotgun on the rare trips to town. We are helping each other heal. We're "trying to hide our sorrow from the people we meet, and get along with it all". I made this dumb video explaining why I named him "Blaze", mostly to show him to friends and family and also show I'm not kidding about how far I drive to my mailbox (45 minute trip). I know my singing is horrible, but somehow I think the original Blaze would be okay with it and understand that his fans love him. ruclips.net/video/7uirJZ6ZjOY/видео.html
I saw him only once at a tiny bar just west of the Drag in Austin around 87. My date wasn't into it in the least and as I was trying to get into her, we split during a break. Always regretted that. He was the stuff of legend in Austin. The big commercial trash container company then was called BFI--something something Industries. The lore was Blaze claimed BFI stood for Blaze Foley Inside as he was known to escape the elements on a rough night by climbing inside to get out of the weather.
Oval Room...Miss Townes, Blaze and now Guy's gone over and more that i can't recall at this moment as music has walked beside me all my life and Im glad these folks were right there for me to enjoy and learn some life lessons from sincere real people..we all have our vices and i dare not put down or wonder why..it's just life 1/2 of it is learning, meeting people and loving it but the last 1/2 is losing them one by one or more at same time and now I wonder why Im still here to feel the emptiness they left behind..my soul looks like a slice of swiss cheese not much left to poke a hole nowadays.....to live is to fly....
Susie Monick is whip smart and obviously fun as hell. Great player! Respect. Reminds me of a few people I used to know. Much love and peace to you all.
Thanks for another good story. She reminded me about a song called The Next Best Western, by Richard Shindell. Someone gave me a cd of his years ago, and that song stood out. Lyrics are both clever and poignant at the same time. Written from the pov of a musician on the road. A good post of it was uploaded by someone called “ r christopher Vest”. Fave Blaze song: Clay Pigeons. Hope everyone has a nice day.😊☮️
'Oval Room' was about Ronald Regan ..that is a good one. I met Debbie Dee at Kerrville at Kamp Shut Up and Sing the Blues 2007 or 2008...Blaze used to crash on her couch a lot. I got a lot of stories from her. Suzy reminded me of Debbie. She wrote a song about him that was really cool.
I like If I could Only Fly. I think Susie might be on the Tales of the Tour Bus by Mike Judge in the Outlaw Country part for both Towns Van Zant and Blaze Foly. Ask her though on this as I am not sure. Speaking of Drunk My Brother and a few friends including me recently on late Friday early Saturday 3-25 or 27- 2022 we created a very simple P Funk style song with two of us on too much beer mainly Seira Nevada Pale Ale for me, but he had some stronger IPA at 7.5--8% ABV. I had a little bit much but the one guy had way to much. Brother has stopped drinking alcohol because when he does Alcohol he will drink way too much.
TVZ used to tell jokes during his performance. Once he was talking about trash dumpsters with the manufacturer’s logo painted on the side. The company’s name was B F I. Townes said that B F I stood for Blaze Foley Inside.
Great story sweet memory 4 sure!! Yeah I have more than sixty cassette tapes of good times, practice, sketches, jams, slice of life conversations and maybe what you could call demos.. several cassettes lost as well.. One of my favorite Blaze tunes is Election Day.. The mask is great.. never will forget my friends and I going to the dollar show "Showboat" to see Point Break after it og came out.. the Presidents masks were awesome.. The Blaze film was great, should have been on the Oscars..
“If I Could Only Fly” and “Clay Pigeons” are the Blaze songs I love best. The respective Merle Haggard and John Prine covers are fantastic. They don’t do many covers, so a big nod to Blaze.
There's a movie about him and also a great documentary. Blaze wasn't the kind of guy who gave a shit about who knew his name or how popular, rich and famous he wasn't. But he was authentic and had integrity --- that's all that counts. He left behind an incredible library of his songs from the heart.
What's your favorite Blaze Foley song?
Clay Pigeons.

Concentrate on getting to see him, not the hookup
I admire the hell out of Blaze. A real unsung hero.

"Picture Cards" always gets to me. So many great Blaze songs.
Thank you, I’ve never heard that song before….definitely a good song
That was Blaze alright. Thanks, Otis, for using my photo of Blaze on this post. Susie is a great storyteller and seems like a really nice lady!

Would love to hear Best Western Christmas someday
I knew blaze before he was blaze. Dep’ty dog was what he called himself in the 70s .
Wrecks Bell is still around, i hope you get to interview him.

Writers, bards, and the song-singer are found mostly in the shadows and not a spot-light.
Clay pigeons is a masterpiece of sorrow and hope. My favorite song ever
Clay Pigeons and Big chief Hightower Susie is cool great story.
"The Duct Tape Messiah"
amazing songwriter
Wish I had a chance to see him, but I have a few CDs that get a lot of play

Oddly enough I just shave my beard down to a Blaze-esque mustache! How apropos!
If I Could Only Fly plus Clay Pigeons!

Seems like the the most intimate stories from back then are the grittiest…. Not all sunshine and roses… Well, maybe Four Roses…?
Agreed
Love “Cold Cold World”
Oh so many mornings needing a pint of vodka to stop shaking. I feel yah blaze.

Merle haggard does a lot of covers. But Prine doesnt.
Blaze certainly was one of a kind.
Thank you! I'm a huge Blaze fan, but sadly there isn't much about him out there.
There's a movie about him and also a great documentary. Blaze wasn't the kind of guy who gave a shit about who knew his name or how popular, rich and famous he wasn't. great story
Hard to pick a favorite, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Clay Pigeons.
I should have been home ..Picture cards cannot picture you
Awesomeness ✌️😎
Might be a dumb question but was "Best Western Christmas" ever recorded? Would love to hear it :)
Good story…
A beach house sounds great unless you've been to Galveston.
Here's a good 12 song (album that never was) playlist of Blaze.

I wonder what the fascination was with Reagan? Such an odd choice for a mask or a pack.
Thank you.
Blaze hated presidents
If you don't dig Blaze I can't be your friend, sorry not sorry
Lived in the moment more. Less capture the moment
