There's a lot of verbiage in this video I'm unfamiliar with and I'm kind of intimidated by all of this, but I have dreamed for years to open up a home for homeless women and after several years of working in a nonprofit, I know that the dream is achievable and necessary. I'm interested in starting a non profit to to research regarding islands being flooded by sea level rise. If I did form such a non profit it would be doing work outside the US. I'm wondering if there are different rules for non profits that work internationally.

Lets say I wanted to start a home based business that sells a product. Lets say I want to donate a % of profits to my state's Foster care families. Would forming a 501c3 be recommended, or would the donations be simple tax write off on a LLC? Any guidance is appreciated.
An organization will only be granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status if it is operated exclusively for exempt purposes, such as the provision of charity, and none of its earnings go to any private individual. The organization’s aim must be to provide a benefit to the public.
Naturally, a for-profit organization is free to make donations to individuals. However, those donations will not be tax-deductible unless the individuals have tax-exempt status. Gifts to individuals are not tax-deductible.

It's articles of incorporation the same as articles of organization?
Hi Dee! Articles of Organization are generally used for LLC formation while Articles of Incorporation are for forming a Corporation. The concept between these two documents is the same, you need these documents as part of starting your business as a legal entity.

I have a grant writer who's going to fill out my 501c3 application. She's asking for my ss#, is this info required?
An application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code requires submission of IRS Form 1023, the general instructions of which state “Don't enter social security numbers on this form or any attachments because the IRS is required to disclose approved exemption applications and information returns.” That being said, the grant writer might need the SSN for another reason. We recommend asking more specifically why it is needed.

Yes, you can use donations to pay for starting your nonprofit.
One solution might be to volunteer for a nonprofit that's already going. That time could be used to help others, build a network of like-minded nonprofit owners and employees, and learn about starting and running a successful nonprofit.
Literally it cost a lot to Kickstart a non profit especially in this part of the world , I had to put mine on hold for years but we did give it a try with no experience this year and it was a fair shot, if you don't get donations or you don't know how to run campaigns you can always try grants.
