For me, Lachenmann and Ferneyhough are the best string quartet writers after 1945. The Arditti String Quartet has no match.

Carter is still my choice. Followed by Babbitt. My first set of Carter was the inimitable Arditti performing 1-4 and Elegy. Who knew Carter would live to 104 and toss of a 5th sq aged 82 in 1995. Still learning about Ferneyhough and Lachenmann.

Why are L and F the best? What's your sense of what they do? I'd like to see commenters back up their opinions.

@@georgemcfetridge8310, it is my opinion. For me, both composers opened new ways for the string quartet genre. Fernbeyhough with the complexities and Lachenmann with the new possibilities of the extended techniques. I love Luigi Nono also.
