Carter is still my choice. Followed by Babbitt. My first set of Carter was the inimitable Arditti performing 1-4 and Elegy. Who knew Carter would live to 104 and toss of a 5th sq aged 82 in 1995. Still learning about Ferneyhough and Lachenmann.
@@georgemcfetridge8310, it is my opinion. For me, both composers opened new ways for the string quartet genre. Fernbeyhough with the complexities and Lachenmann with the new possibilities of the extended techniques. I love Luigi Nono also.

For me, Lachenmann and Ferneyhough are the best string quartet writers after 1945. The Arditti String Quartet has no match.
