I was a student at Lancaster University, Lancs 1969-70 when I first heard this. The song, the Winter in post war England, the rolling hills with crusts of snow edging up to the grey sky….it all made sense. I miss her. Just turned 75. The perfect epilogue.
This was and is...a beautiful song. Yes, when Sandy Denny sang it was so wonderful. She really had a beautiful voice. I've missed that voice for so long. But at least there is this. A great group from the 70s for me, anyway.
Miss you Sandy. You came to Greenwich, London. On stage, in black satin gown, solo at a grand piano, you enchanted us for an hour. On my guitar, this song is my number one. Thank you. X
Beautiful beyond words... Linde did Sandy proud and should have sung the whole song.. it's not for a male to sing IMO, but I guess Fairport Convention feel it's their own ❤🌹❤
There's a delicate quality to Linde's voice that brings out the poignancy of Sandy's lyrics--her voice sounds so young and yet she sings the lyrics with the voice of experience to capture the song's sense of regret and sadness. Yes, she should have sung the entire song, as a female singer's tribute to the female singer/songwriter who wrote this lovely song.
Unusual song musically as it has an also unresolved finale for me. Agree this performance by Linda is excellent anschluss be in the band!. Never heard of her before?
@@hwt-ka-pth I gave my honest opinion of the performance.....in my view it was badly played and the vocal was dreadful.....a glance through the comments will show that I am not alone in my view.
Chris Whiles brought me to the edge of tears when she sang this at Cropredy a few years ago. She easily caught he spirit of the song that was very reminiscent of Sandy. Years before, Vicky Clayton however, sounded exactly like Sandy and the tears did flow. That was when I realised that too close an imitation can be a most disturbing experience, not at all welcome or enjoyable; spooky in fact.
Out of all the many popular music songs ever written, there are but a handful that should be protected by law never to be performed by anyone but the original singer songwriter, and this tune is top of that list....
This is one of those songs, and there are not many of them, where it is best left to the recording made by the original artist. No one else ever came close to Sandy Denny's performance, and it's unlikely that anyone ever will.
So you want to boast that you've heard another version. Well, clever you! Judy sings it as a vehicle to show what a wonderful voice she has. And she hasn't.
She died, only 31 years old after a fall down the stairs. She left behind a legacy and a daughter. She contributed on the Led Zeppelin song, The battle of evermore, duetting with Robert Plant.
I love the song, and I love Fairport. I loved the violin/fiddle. Not sure if the recording was good here, but I gave it a thumbs down, not my favourite version, So sorry. Still love their work.
As nice as it was, the lady performer should have been allowed to sing rhe complete vocal. She surely would have owned/nailed it. Opportunity lost. Sorry acosutic guy, your vocals were not needed . . .
Linda, this is no good, Simon, you can do better! This song is often reduced to a too slow stretching piece of rubber. Unfortunately. Singing Sandy is difficult!
A travesty........they sing this song constantly and keep trying to add a new twist but it ends up sounding dreadful...simply because the original is so special....not sure what Simon Nicol was trying to achieve , but it didn't work...the fiddles were almost playing a reel and Linde Nijland maybe a wonderful singer, but it certainly wasn't evident in this performance. For me, the best post Sandy version I have heard was Vikki Clayton.

I always get teary eyed whenever I hear this song...RIP Sandy ..
Me, too
I first heard Fairport Convention back in the seventies...I am nearing the seventies myself...who knows where the time went
Brings me goose bumps listening to this timeless classic as 67 year old..who knows!!! R.I.P Sandy❤
There comes a time in a life when this song hits deeply home.
More than one, I'd say 8-)
Sadly . This isn't one of them
Simply Beautiful! Thanks to you all.And Sandy Dennis of course.
Geweldige uitvoering. Hij is dit nummer nu vergeten helaas 😢
What a lovely rendition of this beautiful song!
Iv'e never heard of this lady but what a sweet voice she has. Total justice to Sandy's classic.
Absolutely beautiful song and timeless.R.I.P. Sandy.

I thank to the Fairport Convention ...and Fotheringay...RIP SANDY
Early doors 70's x
We who were young in the 70s were so lucky.Music was not about money but real talent.
OMG! Just beautiful.
A lovely tribute to Sandy 💚
Just so fantastic…….beautiful….and the soaring fiddle players❤️🙌🔥
Piercing violin, haunting vocals, timeless tune. I can hear everyone holding their breath, magic!

I'm 73 God I miss Sandy
Me too.
WOW...so beautiful..it sends goose bumps over me..which means to me this is so special. Love it love the sound of violin too. Great 😃💜🌻
I met Dave Pegg and Richard Thompson at Croperdy 1983 :) Happy days.
Thank you
I love you
Absolutely Beautiful❤❤❤
Wonderfull melody Fairport Convention blessed for ever🙏🌹
Thank you Flip.
Beautyful song ...Thank you for your set ❤❤❤

😢 ⛅️ ⤴️
Brilliant. Linde has a beautiful voice.
cricketbat09 Yes! I do agree. Linde Nijland would go great 👍🏽 well with F.C.!
Real feeling thank you
Did anyone notice Dave Pegg's bass playing? It floats in and out. Superb!
absolutely! I aspire, if only!!
@@alancoy9377 ah, Peggy. I notice he's playing this off the A string
An absolute artist on the bass, always has been.
beautiful
Very tasteful bass playing along with a beautiful rendition. Thank you!
Yes...
Who knows where the time goes...God bless you all
Yes a lovely song RIP Sany Denny 🙏
I’ve never listened to FC a before what a mistake how beautiful a song this and how lovely hearing Lindes beautiful voice xx
Brilliant sums it all up
Beautiful music!
Sandy Denny let his stone on the
Path ...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That is something special!!
Royalty. What a precious song.
Oh, well done !
Am a blubbery mess now !

Strong and breathtaking
Love...❤
Beautiful playing by the ensemble. On this occasion though, much as I like Simon's rich tenor, he should've left the singing to Linde. She's special.
Sandy Denny only sang by herself before with them as the band. Yes,it was so beautiful...
Exactly...
awesome arrangement with the strings. so very good
I think it is a bit useless to compare other people's voices to Sandy Denny's. There is no possible comparison. Her voices was just out of this world.
Yeah no comparison, she was great. A beautiful voice like no other! I loved her then and still do. Her voice takes you on a trip!🎶🎵🎶
To Samantha Fenders: The name of the song is A Sailor's Life by Sandy Denny .
I totally agree, it is a wonderful song.
the first band I saw live - late 60's in Copenhagen
Fantastic.
Linde Nijland! Fairport Convention desperately needs you right now as their female singer. Would you like to come and join Fairport Convention?
They need to stop trying to sing this song
Unusual song musically as it has an also unresolved finale for me. Agree this performance by Linda is excellent anschluss be in the band!. Never heard of her before?
This is a great recording. The audio is fantastic.
I should book yourself an appointment with an ear specialist.
@@MrGraham137 You're a bit oversensitive, just try to enjoy like we do
@@hwt-ka-pth I gave my honest opinion of the performance.....in my view it was badly played and the vocal was dreadful.....a glance through the comments will show that I am not alone in my view.
I agree the fiddle player is over liked, and it all seems a bit out of ba1lance.
Miked.
Dear Fairport Convention. Don’tcha miss Sandy Denny? Linde Nijland is the 21st Century version of Sandy Denny. Did you all know that?
She is nowhere close to any kind of version of Sandy Denny
Chris Whiles brought me to the edge of tears when she sang this at Cropredy a few years ago. She easily caught he spirit of the song that was very reminiscent of Sandy.

I love this
I haven't heard this song better.
No Fairport without Sandy Danny!!!
Richard Thompson for me !
Well at least spell her name right then
Stunning
We'll meet on the ledge.
Out of all the many popular music songs ever written, there are but a handful that should be protected by law never to be performed by anyone but the original singer songwriter, and this tune is top of that list....
Beautiful
One of the best british groups ever listen to the wonderful lyrics!🤡
Loved that
Rufus Wainwright does a supreme version
And Rufus also does it as a duet with Brandi Carlile. It's gorgeous.
"Induct Fairport Convention into, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" is on Facebook. Thanks!
a nice voice but no Sandy to me....she was absolutely special! A one of a kind
of course but not the point here
Lovely. But BBC Session with Sandy is hard to match!
Un applauso per questa ragazza 👍👍👍👍
This is one of those songs, and there are not many of them, where it is best left to the recording made by the original artist. No one else ever came close to Sandy Denny's performance, and it's unlikely that anyone ever will.
I'm reduced to a quivering wreck...
If all these very angry and miserable, young people, really knew how quickly time passes, maybe they'd appreciate how lucky they are to be alive.
I miss Sandy denny.
Nice....:)
Nice version.
matur suksma
This rendition, in my opinion, isn't a patch on the version presented on the 1970 (?) Bumpers album.
"How can they know"
👏👏👏👏👏
Very beautiful. Did this song come out before or after Allman Bros. Melissa? jk
Melissa was 1972 and Who Knows Where the Time Goes was 1967. Judy Collins covered it in 1968 which was where I first heard it.
They did'nt get where they are today.....etc.
Good ol’ Simmo!
5:47 oh dear. Love the song, but I would have been on time with my out of tune fog horn, weeping happily. "...and the birds of Spring again"
While this is a great rendition I think Kate Wolfs version is the most sublime.
Except for Sandy's.
The very best version is sung by Judy Collins.
You obviously have not heard the original version......Judy Collins??....seriously?
So you want to boast that you've heard another version. Well, clever you! Judy sings it as a vehicle to show what a wonderful voice she has.
And she hasn't.
I did nt know she died she was nt old how ?
She died, only 31 years old after a fall down the stairs. She left behind a legacy and a daughter. She contributed on the Led Zeppelin song, The battle of evermore, duetting with Robert Plant.
@@arneemilbredland2339 thankyu how so sad , bought unhalfbricking when it came out, might give it a whirl thanks again
That violins is way to load!!
I love the song, and I love Fairport. I loved the violin/fiddle. Not sure if the recording was good here, but I gave it a thumbs down, not my favourite version, So sorry. Still love their work.
Simon never had a good voice, and although a fair rendition, it does not do justice. Richard did a better job but still not a touch on Sandy.
Don't, please just leave this to Sandy.
Stewart McManus I miss Sandy but the girl did an amazing job
they should hire her and get a proper guitar player in
He is a proper guitarist.
Not compared to Richard Thompson...
aie aie aie
Just my opinion, but I think the violin took away from the performance.
Mediocre video and sound. This classic deserves better treatment.
I love Fairport. I love love Sandy. This performance, meh.
I personally think it's a pretty torpid cover. Much as I like FC this is not a good version of Sandy's masterpiece.
Couldn't agree more.
Ethereal
As nice as it was, the lady performer should have been allowed to sing rhe complete vocal. She surely would have owned/nailed it. Opportunity lost. Sorry acosutic guy, your vocals were not needed . . .
Sandy's is beautiful , for me the Nina Simone version is by far the best..
Nine is riveting. God bless them both.
Linda, this is no good, Simon, you can do better! This song is often reduced to a too slow stretching piece of rubber. Unfortunately. Singing Sandy is difficult!
Oh give Linde a break.. it was beautiful,, those two violins together is awesome...
quality is poor and that violin is too aggressive. The original is all about Sandys voice the Guitar
Also main violin sounds off-key.
IMMENSELY better than nothing.
Sandy Denny did this so much better. It's time this lot retired.
