The worst part is it doesn't even sound that bad. Could have a single scene at the very end where it hard cuts to the normal characters and ikora just says "it didn't happen like that, Cayde, do the report right." And then credits
From IMDB: "The movie was shot in the summer of 2021 and Eli Roth's first director's cut was reportedly finished in early 2022. However, it was shelved for over two years due to extreme studio interference while the film was in post-production. Appalled by the film's extreme violence, the studio wanted the film to be marketed as a blockbuster and hired Tim Miller to do extensive reshoots on the project. These reshoots ended up comprising so much of the final movie that Steve Jablonsky had to write an entirely new musical score, as the original score by Nathan Barr no longer fit the film." (Will they ever release the original rated-R version with original sound track?)
You don't need "extreme violence" to make a Blockbuster action movie, nor to make a Borderlands movie. I have been playing BL for almost 15 years and gore has nothing to do with it, actually it was toned down from BL1 to BL2 and BL2 was much more successful. The film, and well the franchise, is flopping for many reasons and "extreme violence" is very far down on that list with writing being at the top with a lot of other reasons in-between.
Hollywood wants to do strong female representation and positive representation of black people in film. How could they screw this up? The 6 strongest people in the universe are women. Roland is a surrogate father to Tina and leader of the Crimson Raiders. Why wouldn’t they keep the ideas of the game and write them to better accommodate the format of film?
I would not be surpirsed that this movie was only conceived because Randy Pitchford wanted to prove he could get a movie made because of some random comment he read many years ago saying that it would never happen.
Man, who could've guessed that the series all about treasure hunting and murdering with random loot would be poorly portrayed when you have to abide by PG-13 standards?
The problem from my perspective, with the IP in general, is Randy. He caught lightning in a bottle with BL1-BL2 and has taken it into a horrible direction since. Like making bad hires/ fires with "letting go" of David Eddings and hiring Sam Winkler as lead writer for examples. The man is arrogant, as you know, a bad guy (looking at reports from the Medieval Times from 2014), and a bad CEO in the process of driving a once very successful company into ground. If Embracer Group has the power to fire Randy, they would be wise to b-FOUR it's too late.
I feel like where Fallout, Edgerunners, and Arcane succeeded is where the other shows failed. It wasn't just that these shows were superior in writing, aesthetic and presentation, it was that they were telling their own stories, but set in these worlds we know well, as opposed to taking characters and plotlines we already know well and completely changing them for the purpose of "doing their own thing." When the source material is right there staring them in the face and they ignore it when it has been successful, it's simply baffling. It's like they're given a blueprint on how to print money and they ditch it for a pile of turds. Obviously tweaking some things is good and sometimes necessary with lore development that occurs throughout the series, or fixing plot holes, but it all just comes off as being a vanity project or a cash grab.
It needs to be an R rated movie, borderlands has never been a kid friendly place, ultra violence, over the top reactions, excessive swearing, constant innuendos. They washed it down to try to appeal to a wider audience and ended up appealing to none
I'm reminded of a quote from Michael Caine many years ago that covers half the cast, "Sometimes, in order to maintain a very high standard of living, one has to make a very low standard of movie."
Who wants to take bets that the only reason Randy Pitchford unblocked Paul was because Randy knew the longer he kept Paul blocked the more the Borderlands community would rally behind Paul and call the movie a failure (which it is) and call for Randy to step down so someone who actually listens to the players/viewers and doesn't act like a 5 year old when they get told their art project sucks.
Honestly, Randy going on a boohoo crying rampage on twitter is giving this film more exposure than the actual marketing or word of mouth. This movie just simply wasn’t made for anyone. It’s not for the players and it’s not for general audiences. Unfortunately it’s not just a bad video game movie. It’s just a poorly conceived idea and bad movie in general due to writing, casting, direction.
Way before the trailers, when they announced the casting I knew this was going to be an awful movie. I mean they cast 2 senior citizens as women in their late 20s early 30s.
The casting still could have worked though w good writing and source material. They just didnt even try making it feel like Borderlands. Bad casting is one thing but these are mostly good actors besides Hart. They could have molded into character but they had nothing to get into. The wtiting didnt allow for them to.
@@bradkirchhoff5703 I think i have to agree with Scott. It isn't a question of the actors being good actors or not. It's a question of them being a good fit. Too many movies try to get big names instead of good fits and it hurts the end product.
It’s so funny seeing this movie right after seeing Deadpool 3 cos the way they made that movie almost felt borderlands esque where it embraced the full wackiness of its characters yet somehow made it work in a mad max setting like BL
Still haven't subjected myself to the film, but as a long time fan of the games, Kevin Hart as Roland would have made more sense if the rest of the casting, and acting, and story that I've seen from the previews was closer to games. He obviously doesn't have the stature, but the comedy edge may have lent well to the overall project if it wasn't so focused on quips and spectacle. Part of the charm of BL1 & BL2 was the dry humor and more sincere violence. Like how Scooter is so nonchalant about killing and burying Lucky, or like TK at the beginning of the game.
At this point, I just want to see a movie (based on a video game franchise that people love) where they use cosplayers who can do their respective character's voice and personality flawlessly.

Adding on the absolutely insane casting choices, the re-written backstories, the runtime.. dialogue.. yeah they made sure this was going to fail. Not sure why people talk about Avi Arad like his name must mean the thing will flop. He also produced the Spider-Verse films. not surprised when people are saying "Oh Claptrap is so annoying." No, that's his character. What I don't get is, why are studios trying to make August a movie season? Yes, sometimes some films can make a big hit.... BUT THERE'S SO MUCH TO DO IN AUGUST, EVERYONE DOESN'T WANT TO SIT IN THE THEATER WHEN THEY CAN DO ANYTHING ELSE! I've seen this for over 25 years and they never get it!
Actually you are wrong on the August part. Its back to school season as Summer is ending. It was only 60 degrees here this week w rain. Kids love to go to the movies and then go to school the next day to tell ppl all about it.
Disappointed that this movie flopped so hard when the potential for another great video game to movie franchise was so real, For me, BL2 has one of the best video game antagonist's I've ever seen, the story was fire, BL3 the story wasn't as strong, but holy shiz the gameplay was insane and on point, far surpassing BL2 in those aspects, BL4 could be a combination of both 2's storytelling and 3's gameplay to make the best BL game yet, here's hoping that BL4 is the best action RPG in year's, and that Randy gets his head out of his ass long enough to understand that the fans just want to have fun in this world, haha. Guess I'mma go finish 2 then play 3 and all of it's glorious DLC, (which from what i heard actually is better than the base game), heck if they want to, they can start BL4 off with Marcus saying that the later half of BL3 was a deunk rambling, and renig some of the choices, I'd be down for that, lol. 🙏🏾💯🎮🤓
You can tell they went hard to kid audience: PG-13, poop jokes etc. Perhaps the biggest tell is making Tiny Tina the center of attention, the one teen character. Clearly it was originally Lilith, but someone must have decided it had to be Tina, which is why there's the odd bait and switch where it's Tina right up until the end, then it's Lilith. They had to go back to Lilith to have the Siren reveal.
As a longtime Borderlands fan myself, my first thought when I saw that they were making a movie was "Why?" Then the trailer is Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchet and fart jokes; this movie wasn't made for me. I played OG Borderlands on an ATI HD 5750 and this movie wasn't made for me. What?
Look man... I don't know what they were thinking with a "Borderlands" movie in the first place. It's not THAT big. Not even all gamers are that familiar with it, let alone the mainstream mass audience. - OK, sure, you can introduce it TO them, which was probably the angle. But then they failed by trying to make it like "Guardians of the Galaxy"-ish, which they probably hoped would appeal to people, you know "the quirky gang doing quirky things in a violent world" or whatever. - But another mistake was that they didn't make it animated. Better yet, an animated SERIES, on Netflix or something. That way they could've just stuck with the same visual style (but fancier) and probably even kept the same voice-actors, and on a streaming-platform they wouldn't even have to get people to theaters. - Why would you NOT do it that way???... - Again, yes, they wanted this to be this big movie-franchise, probably, but... you can't force that, especially not if you halfass it.
I'm a huge fan of the franchise up to BL3 where it lost me with its story and unnecessary patches of guns that made the game fun. I can't bring myself to watch this movie. Just from the trailer, it looked hard to watch. I shouldn't let it affect me, but I couldn't help but be upset.
Since Randy thought the Borderlands movie was good I have zero faith in his ability to shepherd the next Borderlands game. He needs to step down or be let go.
Even with the DLC the story of the first game was thin enough that they could have done a retelling that did zero damage to the game story. They could have even done a side story between 1 and 2 that covers whatever Roland and co did involving Tina and General Rancid(my recollection of the generals name may be wrong but it was a throw away line from Tina in BL2). This felt like another over the top PR move by Randy that blew up in his face and now he is throwing a tantrum. Its par for the course as far as Randy's behaviour and frankly it wasnt acceptable as a child and it is dumbfounding from an adult
randy was really hoping on the reality where he said "maybe i was wrong paul, ill read your book" and you apologize to him and confess you absolutely love the movie
They did the absolute worst possible choice they could have with this movie. They didn’t attract new people and then spurned the people who invested in the franchise over the years.
The guy who directed this was the one who made the Venom movies not rated R for his own “reasons” and Morbius…this movie was ALSO not rated R…see the trend he’s making? Everything he touches turns to shit. Borderlands: the OG looter shooter, that pioneered the genre, that blew up in 2009/2012 that touched many gamer’s hearts, that had such deep lore, Easter eggs for various other games. Like I still remember the Dark Souls Easter egg and the Minecraft one. Just go play BL2 one of the greatest games ever made. But with all that, the director is like he never played the games. I don’t know how this project even made it out the door, did he want to prove a point? Ruin a fanchise? The moment Brick and Mordecai weren’t there, the writing was on the wall… Wouldn’t be shocked if it made it to streaming services next week at this rate no blu-ray. 1/10 waste of fucking time. If you’re interested in the series or the lore, just play the games they’re all fun. The pre-sequel is…interesting, but it sets up a lot of stuff for the future games and gives some backstory for Jack
When. I heard they were making a BL movie I was so happy. Even w the casting I was still on board. When I saw the 1st trailer my heart sank. I knew immediately they didnt even try. We get 2 weapons from the game and they are both extremely boring versions. Remember the theme for Borderlands when it came out? “Millions of guns”. They had weird features to them like frazy reloads, some could shoot by themselves, grenade mods, action skills, companions…Where the fuck is ANY of that? This wasnt a Borderlands movie. Idgaf what they try saying its not a Borderlands movie its a Mad Max lite movie.
Jack should have been the villain, and they could totally kill him at the end and bring him back if the box office had been successful. The universe of Borderlands has digistruct machines that the player uses every time they respawn. So movie 1 ends with them roasting Jack but little do they know he just respawned on another planet. So in the sequel not only do they have to kill Jack but they have to pull him out of the digistruct network first. That way they get to reuse the most popular villain. oh AND JACK HAS FUCKING BODY DOUBLES EVERYWHERE
Honestly, this is one of the kinder critiques I've heard. But yeah, I'm mostly intrigued now by how much this movie is going to lose. Oh as of 21 August 2024, they've pretty much pulled the movie from theatres and they've also gone nuclear i.e. thrown the BL4 announcement out. It's coming in 2025 so still a long time more but I'm fairly optimistic that the gunplay will be good though I'm certain it'll be a damn mess on launch.
Randy really did go on a blocking spree. He even blocked Ki11er S1x, and that's such a weird thing to do. I know Randy said it was by mistake, but still odd. As long as people are only making critiques about the movie without being nasty, then it should be fine lol
It's the same fail as Star Wars. If they had made the Borderlands movie in the same spirit as Borderlands the game, then the game audience AND the general audience would BOTH HAVE LOVED IT. Instead they try to take the game out of it and change it to be for mass appeal, and in doing so lost BOTH the video game fans AND the general audience. I hope maybe one of these days Hollywood will learn this lesson. It's sad, but the Dungeons and Dragons movie was a great example of how to do this right but it never caught on as it should have.
Being blocked by Randy Pitchford tells me that you are a good person and heightens my respect for you tbh 😂

Hey Paul! Do more of these. I’m in.
Why they didnt just copy the Arcane formula baffles me.
What?
I'm SHOCKED! SHOCKED I TELLS YA!!!!
As one of the last journalists out there with integrity, thank you for your work!
The Greasy Strangler blocked you? I consider that a badge of honor.
Since Randy thought the Borderlands movie was good I have zero faith in his ability to shepherd the next Borderlands game. He needs to step down or be let go.
I read that it was shot as a R-rated movie but it was edited as a PG-13
They should've gone full R rating like Deadpool or the Fallout show or TLOU.
You should do more movie reviews! Enjoyed this
randy was really hoping on the reality where he said "maybe i was wrong paul, ill read your book" and you apologize to him and confess you absolutely love the movie
Bobby Lashley should have been Rolland I don’t know how his acting is but he fits a lot better 😂
They did the absolute worst possible choice they could have with this movie. They didn’t attract new people and then spurned the people who invested in the franchise over the years.
you can add to your resume that randy pitchford thinks you're hung
your weakness has been noted.
Randy's greasy finger slipped and hit the block button.
Can't believe you actually enjoyed this movie, Paul.
They wanted to make this a "Cinematic universe"?? God I hope they take this first movie as a hint and throw that idea out the window.
did they have ANY test screenings? That alone would have stopped it...
It felt like they shit of my childhood.
I never thought there would be a video game movie worse than 1993’s Super Mario Bros, but holy shit this is close lol😂
So what I'm hearing is if one doesn't know much or anything about borderlands, this might be a decent film
Only heard about you because of this "dumb feud." Full on Streisand effect.
"We don't need to personally insult Randy a million times" - that's fine, Civvie11 has that covered in his gaming videos 😂
The whole r rated movies dont make as much money argument got tossed right out the window with Deadpool Wolverine. Currently over 1 billion.
My observation has been that when tech people interact with Hollywood they get starstruck and stupid. I've observed this first hand.
We love you Paul!
I didn't even know that there was a borderlands movie goes to show the marketing I never seen anything... anything lol
Careful, Randy gonna send some Pinkertons to your house for this video, wouldn't be the first time
It’s always morally good and correct to insult Randy a million times. Not being insulted enough is why he has such a swollen ego.
Randy really did go on a blocking spree. He even blocked Ki11er S1x, and that's such a weird thing to do. I know Randy said it was by mistake, but still odd. As long as people are only making critiques about the movie without being nasty, then it should be fine lol
Still less of a budget than The Acolyte. Is it better? Can it be worse?
If you want a good Borderlands experience and don’t mind a board game look at Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery!
The casting was the first mistake, Eli Roth was the second
It's the same fail as Star Wars.
If they had made the Borderlands movie in the same spirit as Borderlands the game, then the game audience AND the general audience would BOTH HAVE LOVED IT. Instead they try to take the game out of it and change it to be for mass appeal, and in doing so lost BOTH the video game fans AND the general audience.
I hope maybe one of these days Hollywood will learn this lesson. It's sad, but the Dungeons and Dragons movie was a great example of how to do this right but it never caught on as it should have.
