I just found this wonderful parade tonight and I am truly happy and excited. Why haven't this wonderful event been televised for the world I enjoy? This parade made this old broad who happens to be a disabled veteran forget (at least for a few minutes) that I am ill. Many thanks to all the participants and to the video specialist for posting this wonderful parade for all of us to enjoy. Big hugs to all!

@Bradford Russo7480 I moved from Lancaster to Orlando in 1973. I miss it a lot, now am 79 years old. Was firefighter in Lancaster, and Insurance Agent in East Petersburg

I've been watching for about 60 years. (On TV from Lancaster.)
It seems to me, the classic "Mummer's Strut" is a dying art. The old energy just isn't there. And, Where are the 173 tier umbrellas ?

The parade is dying... And we are all doing our best to revitalize it. As the times are changing so is the classic traditional strut and the way this parade is. It's sad but we need to continue to adapt to these terrible times and keep on keeping on. God bless you and Happy New year.

@@Tommy.OrginalvideosPhilly Up to this time, I was Not able to verbally describe the "classic" Mummer's Strut. I just knew the current performances lacked this "un-describable" energy and enthusiasm. The "showmanship" or "entertainment value" had drained away.
Then, last evening, I was scrolling through old videos. AHA! There was one which showcased the right moves. For a brief instant of about 4 seconds, I saw what I was looking for. In the background, one lone man was performing it correctly. Now, I AM better able to voice the action.
He bent low at the waist. Then straightened out and flung his head sharply back. He stepped briskly, both forward and backward. Lifting the knees high. Arms swinging out like "chicken wing". Including a twirl around, to change direction. All while pumping the umbrella up and down. The great classic performance is clearly the combined execution of these deliberately exaggerated "gyrations". As opposed to the limp, almost lifeless performance of recent years. Where men only seem to stiffly walk mostly forward. No real bending. Mostly "holding" the umbrella instead of truly "pumping" it, in time with the music.
I am sure there is footage of decades ago, which show this entire process. Today's performers need to see, study, emulate, practice. In the same sense as ANY truly professional choreography.
To the spectators, this dance may look like dis-organized chaos. But NOT SO. It is actually as skillful, coordinated, choreographed, rehearsed, and athletic as any professional ballet, or the Rockettes at Radio City. A truly professional performance, by talented artisans and practitioners. A pleasing form of entertainment, which hearkens back to the real troupers of the vaudeville stage.

Love this parade, but why are there all these people in regular dress march with the Mummers? How long ago did they allow women to be Mummers?
