Big Storm on the Way and a Quick Look at my Acu Rite Weather Station

  • I'm a bit of a weather geek, so have been very happy with the Acu-Rite model 02032C wireless weather station that I bought at Costco last Fall for $80. 2-3 inches of snow are predicted for tonight and tomorrow, so the 100 degree temps I had earlier in the week are a distant memory.

    I have a lightning detector version of the same station that covers the front yard andI also have a 3 in 1 that covers the back yard and each one has two recievers so i can monitor the weather from up in my room and downstairs at the same time I also LOVE the fact thatthe station loggs the data in for the day so I dont have to worry about missing sone extreme wind gusts and I will store that data in for the year so I can look at it at a later time

      de N5XTC Thanks, this is a great spot for radio. 10 has been hot the past couple days. Our fav. Ham in GA, Todd was almost pinning my S meter at 60 over yesterday. I was hearing/working Europe till late in the day, so the best conditions I've seen on 10 this cycle.

      NWHiker is that a free campsite? looks like an awesome spot. prob real nice in the summer as well. where is it near? used to tool around up there, been all over arizona many many times. miss her!!!!

      de N5XTC Yes, this is Forest Service land, so lots a free camping. Either boondocking type camping or pay campgrounds. I think there's even a free campground just down the road, but it doesn't have any views. I'm on the Mogollon Rim Rd. about 60 miles SE of Flagstaff AZ and can see Payson AZ about 10 miles S of me in the valley. You'll have to check this area out if you get back this way.

      NWHiker what areas do you spend the summer? near Flag would be as good a place as any as its HOT in the lower elevations. I may be on road this next year and living out of my trailer. no more in a few months. cant offroad like you with my setup. it is what it is, cant get another setup right now.

      de N5XTC Last Spring I worked my way N. from AZ/NV up through this area and then over to the N. Rim of the Grand Canyon. Had my radiator go bad, so ended up hanging out in the Lk Powell Utah area for 10 days, then made my way up through Utah following the weather to the high country. Spent about 4 weeks exploring the S.Central red rock country/mountains in Utah. I love Utah!, there's lakes and mountains throughout. Worked my way up to NE Utah and then up to Flaming Gorge Reservoir on the UT/WY border. Spent about 3 weeks in WY then up through MT and back to WA in late July. I fish and enjoy the mountains, so that's usually the direction I'm going. Nice alpine lake/stream with lots a hiking around and I'm happy.
      I haven't decided what I'll do this year. I might do something similar to last year. I hardly touched all the beautiful places to go in Utah/Wyoming, so that's the general plan. I'm not too far from New Mexico, so might head that direction and check out that state. I like to go slow and enjoy an area, so no rush. Most of the places I go would be fine pulling a trailer. Utah has excellent gravel roads as does Arizona, Oregon as well. The worst roads you'll find are in my home state of WA.
      10 is all but dead this morning. I can just barely hear KC4 Todd in GA calling CQ right now. I always use him as a beacon to see how 10 is doing, so he does serve a purpose some what......LOL Heard a couple S. African stations on about 1 hr ago and only a few S. Amer. so not much on. Do you ever get on 80? I put up an Inverted V the other day, but haven't made any contacts on that band. I see it came down in the wind storm last night, so will probably retire that antenna and put up a 40 meter dipole. Need to buld that one, so be a good project for today. Sun is out, so not the nasty wx like yesterday.

    That looks more like Seattle's weather lately. A welcome relief from the 100's you were in a week ago. Be safe with that lightning too. It can turn a fun time into a nightmare in the blink of an eye! Great video! Sorry to hear of your fridge issues. Good thing you have a back up though. You are certainly prepared. Cheers!

      froggypics Yes it does. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I do miss the rain. I know if I get rain down here it won't last long. Only a inch of snow last night, so was hoping for more. I can see farther along the rim and 300-500 ft. higher they had quite a bit. Snow is still on the trees and it's all white. Darn, was hoping for enough to roll some big snow balls and make an outside fridge.

    You might be able to get the frig repaired. I know you like to do the work yourself, but you might consider taking it in to an RV repair shop, to see if a component just needs to be replaced. Might cost the same as the $250 frig, and you would still have propane.

      ***** I had a strong ammonia smell the other day and I could hear it gurgling, so the cooling unit has started leaking. Installing a new cooling unit ($600) is the lowest cost option if I want to keep the propane option. New propane fridge would cost $1100 plus and that's if I do the work myself. They aren't cheap!......I run my EdgeStar freezer off A/C most of the time with the over abundance of solar power I have, so I think I'd do fine with a small residential energy star fridge. I just added the new Trojan batteries, so it would be a good test to see if I can manage with a low cost alternative. Time will tell......LOL

    Really enjoy your videos and adventures. Just a thought on your frig, you said its not working, I was wondering if its not working on either source 120 volt or gas? how about the 12 volt power source? not sure if yours is two way or three way but even on two way you need a 12 volt power source and there may be a fuse in your converter box on the 12 fuse block and on the circuit board on the frig.

      Trapper & Boo Thanks, I should have explained more with the fridge. I could smell a strong ammonia smell the other day and could hear it gurgling, so I have a leak some where in the cooling unit. Needs a new cooling unit, so that's going to be $500-600. New fridge will run about $1,100-1,200, so it's not cheap. I think I'm going to order a 4.5 cubic ft. residential mini fridge and replace it with that. $219.00 at Home Depot I'll have to run it off my inverter, but shouldn't be a problem with my current solar/battery banks. I will miss the propane option, so I'm still up in the air on what I'll do.

    Do you work up on the mountain or something? Btw got the same station, you should look into the Acurite atlas when comes out, its solar powered and has a lightning detector.
    Would probably work well for you.

    • @K7CARadio
      @K7CARadio  7 лет назад

      No don't work up there, I'm full time RVer. I'm on my 3rd set of wind cups, so that's a weak point with that unit. Will have to check out the Atlas.

    • @cometchris1090
      @cometchris1090 7 лет назад

      NWHiker it's solar powered and it comes with a lightning detector. It's going to be released just don't know when. The atlas elite is the one I meant. You should look into it.

      There is also a acurite with a lightning detector that looks just like yours except the display is different and yes the same weak wind cups but they are replaceable IDK if the atlas wind cups are replaceable and the atlas is 2x the size of the 5 in 1so thats something also to think about and it also has a touch screen display and 10 second updates

    How are you on your third set of wind cups did you drop the station to many times or did something hit it

    • @K7CARadio
      @K7CARadio  6 лет назад

      The wind cups are the weak point. Fortunately you can get replacements for about $15 on the Accurite website. J/B weld or Super Glue works in a pinch.
