- Why do I sail solo in a 55 feet yacht when you can cross oceans in almost anything? I really wanted a multihull yet I ended up sailing a modern 55 monohull. This is not about monohull versus catamarans, or telling you what to buy or not. Simply sharing my journey and how and why I ended up in a 55 Monohull. It a bit nerdy video but if you are wondering about hull designs and why I sail a modern production yacht, you might get some answers and also understand my statements. It's not only black and white mono versus catamarans or as some believe blue water yacht is a category, Not everyone can afford a custom-built yacht no matter hull design. And the custom build yachts within your budget might be old. Not everyone likes to have an old yacht or old-school design either. Does size matter? And what about old myths that origins from frightened competitors 20-30 years ago, desperately trying to find arguments against new yacht manufacturers with great engineering and high tech production lines. Are these arguments still valid?
Is it true if you wanna sail around the world the only thing that counts is skeg hung rudders and a long keeled ketch? I don't want to offend anyone and if that happens here it's not intentional. Yachts are almost religion.
It has been a challenge not to talk about my yacht but it's not to brag about her it's only as an example. I'm not pointing at any brands in my illustrations or statements.
I'm no expert and I definitely don't have any blueprint.
But I dare to share with you my point of view of it all and invite you to see how I was thinking and honestly tell you why I'm not sailing a catamaran.
The answers might surprise you, but then again that was the biggest advantage old Vikings had :-)

I'm trying to sail around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since.

I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

I'm so tired of the boating community spewing so much outdated and inaccurate information. It's amazing how often you will see people telling someone they're going to die if they get X boat or don't get Y boat. IMHO, if it's seaworthy, and you enjoy sailing it, it's the perfect boat.
I'm personally aiming at the "performance cruiser" catamaran as my goal. Something that is a happy medium of spaciousness/comfort and performance. I was originally not interested in daggerboards because I didn't want them sticking way up out of the deck when they are up, and didn't like the idea of sacrificing interior space, I have to admit, between captive enclosed daggerboards and their various advantages over standard cat minikeels, I'm starting to feel more and more like I want to go that direction.

My personal opinion is a lot of sailors would been much better of with a easy handling modern mass production yacht and just go out sailing instead of an old expensive upper fixer. Anyway I’m excited to hear about your catamaran!!! Performance is also comfort in terms of how a performance cat slice through the water. What a relief to hear an objective , science based, view of yacht design. it has always amazed me how all these mass production yacht manufacturers survive the law suits when their keels and rudders fall off every five minutes. To hear the stories its so bad that if the separated keels and rudders floated it would almost be possible to walk to the Bahamas ;-) (just painted a target on my back :-)). Thankyou for adding balance to the debate, I owe you a beer for that...

Nope. The man who starts selling items for boats at a reasonable price will become a broke man very quickly. You think boat stuff is expensive because of greed. But that is not true. It is expensive because of low volume. There just aren't that many boats compared to, say, cars or cell phones or computer monitors. There is no huge pent-up demand of billions of sales waiting for the price to drop on boat parts. Especially cruising boats.
A well presented and delivered summary of your boat buying choice. I particularly like your choice to only spend 50% of your cash on the boat and to keep the remainder in the bank for running costs etc. Some people spend too much on the initial purchase and don't maintain the boat. I hadn't thought about the practicalities of an aft cockpit, dinghy garage and swim platform, they make a lot of sense.

wow! that was great. I have spent my life cruising in small boats. the smaller the better. the reason is I love cruising all the time and hate working in pointless jobs. I have never even thought of shopping in your price range. My boats cost the same as one of your winches. I agree that project boats are for people who prefer boat building rather than sailing and partying. I bought a 45ft wooden ketch once and ended up a victim of deep water marinas etc, never again. I would love to have your budget to choose such a fine yacht. I believe in the Moto, go small, go cheap but go NOW! I have seen so many people stuck on marinas for years until their boat is perfect. I get the best I can afford and fix it as I go or learn to live without things, like engines, lol.

There is always compromise, regardless of budget. Your wants, your abilities, your plans all count. So even if you and I have similar plans, our optimum yacht could be very different. Which is very much in agreement with what you were saying. Still it is good to get other peoples opinions. I really like the way you repeated, that you were after a yacht for you.

As you spoke about the reasons why you wanted a bluewater boat like you now have, I kept saying Yes, Yes! I am finally able to listen to someone that thinks much the same way as I but has more knowledge on the subject than me. Access to the water for boarding and swimming is an important feature often over looked.

Thank you Thomas. You made a number of very good and interesting points. I'm looking forward to the future subject videos. Some of the sailing channels I follow have experienced major mechanical and accident setbacks over the past year. Lightning, groundings, transducer failures with flooding, catamarans cracking in high seas and even an anchor falling overboard while underway (while still attached with chain). Really crazy stuff. No wonder the insurance rates are so high.
Thank you for your feedback 🙏🏻 Risk of something happening will always be there. It’s all about trying to minimise and one of the reasons I have my check list before leaving marina or anchorage. My check list have saved my ass at least three times. Last time before leaving marina in Grenada. I wish the insurance companies could have a better discount systems. But that’s another topic😅

Very informative. I came to the same conclusion in my research. I settled on a 4-cabin Horstman trimaran. I get most of the upwind sailing capabilities of a monohull and most of the space and comfort of a catamaran. However, I had to spend some time and money in refit to bring it up to modern standards. Your conclusion is same as mine tho, 90% of a boats life is spent at rest. My boat is rock solid in an anchorage while the cockpit is bone dry during sailing in any storm.

A very good lesson on yacht selection. I may not agree with your choices, but I can respect them.
I actually took a course on yacht design and planned on designing sailing yachts.
I have discovered that there are so many sailing yachts already available that there is not much need for my training.
In my opinion, any monohull that can recover from a 120 degree knock down is safe enough for blue water passages, providing the keel, the rudder and the rig will stay intact.
You do bring up some valid points 👏

CONTROVERSIAL??? What is controversial is that people want or people talk or write about things like there are all these absolutes. They may has "custom yacht" or "blue water cruiser" - yet they are just guidelines or general concepts. I loved how he was showing "Tiki" as a custom yacht - and also his 10' sailboat when he was a kid as a "custom boat".
What is controversial is all the controversy for nothing. It is like the GD Church of Woke Outrage and Fake Virtue took over one year (2019?) and they are only almost happy when you get canceled ... yet they are never really happy at all. It is only misery they love to inflict on the heretics, infidels and apostates of the world. You know, REAL humans!

Hey that’s amazing! I read a lot about this when I was young dreaming of the adventure I’m on rigg now. The KonTiki raft is on the Heyerdahl museum in Oslo. The one I was towing and also onboard was the replica made for the cinema. All the best and cheers 🍻

You are mostly correct, there's nothing particularly wrong with sailing production boats. The problems arise less when sailing and more when running into things.
Top personal preference, I like submerged objects to bounce off of my hull and rudder without any damage :)

@@SailingwithThomas Depends on where you sail. West coast of Canada as well as Alaska waters are full of floating trees, some 50-60 meters long. I've hit three (at speed) and was glad for my strong hull each time. Kelly-Peterson 46 hull #005.

Nice. I also would be a solo sailor (if I had a boat) and so that is an important topic for me. I was initially thinking multi-hull because less roll at anchorage. But maybe not now. I certainly am in the "no sail-drive" camp.
A cat normally sits pretty nice in Anchorage but so do deep keel wide body Modern mono. The sail drive is something I did not want either, however its possible to find cats with straight shafts. Not many but they do exist. Most important for me end of the day was budget and running costs. Cheers 🍻

I remember watching a Hobie Cat trying to make the narrow entrance to a marina with a mild following breeze. When the captain realized he was not going to make it, he tacked to a broad reach with intention to quickly tack again (a dogleg) into the opening. Apparently, broad reach was its best point of sailing, because that Cat launched forward as though a bolt from a crossbow and drove the prow of one hull into the space between two pilings before the captain could react. After some some effort he was able to get his boat unstuck, but I had never before seen such acceleration under sail. Impressive!

As a former 57ft monohull “blue water” sv owner, now looking at cats, I have a foot on either deck. Looking forward to more in this series. Well reflected and always good when someone dears challenge outdated myths. We are waiting for our new cat, but has been happy owners and long distance cruisers with both monos and cats previously, all of them being "production boats". Cats in high latitudes are no problem. Remember when considering upwind performance one should measure the VMG, not only the angle of attack. It`s not tacking machines, but you do manage with several brands out there. That said - who wouldn`t be in the tropics on a Bavaria 55. Looking forward to upcoming videos and fair winds :-)

A refreshing perspective you have clarified my thinking in my choice of boat. Saved be a lot of time and angst. After seeing the motion of the hull of your modern hull shape and your explanation of the benefits of two rudders was a revelation. I had bypassed modern hull shape production boats as an option as I had heard a steady stream of adverse. Comments.what you say makes perfect sense reinforced by the video footage of your yacht underway thank you liked and subscribed looking forward to your next video

By far the best comparison, choosing speed and upwind performance are the way to go, avoiding rough weather through speed and more accurate predictions (Windy) would be my choice!
