  • Dr. Alejandro Brice, Professor at the University of Florida at St. Petersburg, is interviewed by Dr. Brenda Gorman, Associate Professor at Elmhurst College, about what it takes to be an effective bilingual speech-language pathologist (SLP). Bilingual learners are an extremely heterogeneous group for whom a one-size-fits-all approach is not effective. Speech-language pathologists need a strong knowledge base and skill set to provide evidence-based assessment, intervention and counseling services for bilingual clients, their families, and other professionals who work with them. Therefore, bilingual clinicians' language proficiency needs to be accompanied by specialized training in communication development and disorders in bilingual speakers.
