Several people are curious to know if Rosemary oil is efficacious for hair growth on the bald spot. Can it control hair fall? Is it better than Minoxidil? Can it be a worthy alternative to Minoxidil for those who are allergic to topical lotion?
In this research-oriented educational video, Dr John Watts - a noted dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad - explains the advantages of Rosemary oil as a promising hair growth option with scientific studies and research to back this claim.
Introduction:
Rosemary oil is a proven option for stimulating hair growth. It is extracted from a medicinal plant called Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). It is known to be effective in controlling hair fall besides working in preventing androgenetic alopecia (genetic baldness). It works as a good alternative for those who cannot use conventional hair loss treatment options for several reasons.
Rosemary Oil: Findings
Explaining its qualities and the scientific working principle, Dr John Watts said that Rosemary oil acts through the microcapillary perfusion technique. In other words, the oil helps in improving the blood circulation to the small blood vessels in the hair roots of the scalp just like what Minoxidil manages to do.
“The rosemary oil uses the same technique that Minoxidil uses in improving the blood circulation that helps in hair growth, controlling hair fall and preventing baldness,” explained Dr John Watts.
Rosemary Oil: Research
While highlighting the latest scientific research into the working of Rosemary oil for hair growth, Dr John Watts cited a landmark study titled “Rosemary oil vs minoxidil 2% for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: a randomized comparative trial”.
The study - conducted by a team of researchers led by Yunes Panahi, Mohsen Taghizadeh, Eisa Tahmasbpour Marzony, Amirhossein Sahebkar - conducted a controlled experiment using Rosemary oil and Minoxidil 2% on two groups of 50 subjects each for over 6 months. These 50-50 member groups of subjects had common androgenetic alopecia problems.
Process: While one group was given 2% Minoxidil for application, the other group used Rosemary oil as a topical lotion. The subjects were photographed one day 1 and on the last day of the 6th month and the outcome was compared.
“End of the experiment it was found that those who used Rosemary oil had considerable hair growth results as the application of 2% Minoxidil had achieved. There was not much difference,” informed Dr John Watts.
It was further found that those who used Rosemary oil did not experience any itching issues, unlike the Minoxidil users.
How to apply:
Explaining the Rosemary oil application process, Dr John Watts said that if one intends to use the oil one can mix it with coconut oil. “Take 5 drops of Rosemary oil and mix it with coconut oil and give a gentle massage to the scalp. One can either rinse it off with water after half an hour or keep it like that,” informed Dr John.
Conclusion:
In his concluding remarks, Dr John Watts said that Rosemary oil is a safe bet for those allergic to Minoxidil, especially those in the early stage of baldness. He said that there are no studies yet to find out if Rosemary oil is effective for those with advanced stages of baldness.
He pointed out that Minoxidil topical lotion is available in higher dosages/concentrations like 5% or 10% or above. However, he said that no comparative studies were conducted to find out if a higher dosage of Minoxidil performs better vis a vis Rosemary oil.
“In the given experiment, only 2% Minoxidil was used for the subject for those in the early stage of baldness,” informed Dr John Watts.

Actually i used 5% minoxidil for 1 year and stopped but within 5months my falls 10times more. So that i started again same solution now Iam using 5% minoxidil for 1½ year but there is no such visible result. Can i use rosemary oil by stopping minoxidil?
