PROGRAM NOTE:
Carmen Variations by the legendary pianist Vladimir Horowit.
This piano transcription by the great Vladimir Horowitz features the theme from Act II of Bizet Carmen Opera “Les tringles des sistres tintaient”.
From my understanding, there is no original score for this as Horowitz never published them, most of the scores available are notated based off Horowitz’s performances and piano rolls.
There are a couple of version of this iconic encore piece, notably the Carnegie Hall and the White House version, this particular recording is a mix of those two versions.
My reference recording for this piece would definitely be by Horowitz himself as well as Yuja Wang's interpretation, both superbly performed.
