  • Today we had an incredible and honest conversation with NFL kicker, Dustin Hopkins, and his wife Gabby! We chatted about how Gabby overcame her struggles with postpartum depression, how they keep their marriage strong through different seasons, the importance of faith in their lives and their new non-profit organization “The Well Foundation,” which was inspired by their son, Wake. The Hopkins are great friends of ours and we know by the end of this episode they’ll feel like friends of yours, too!

We definitely need a part 2 - 3 - 4, etc. In fact, they should be like monthly guests on the pod. This might be one of my fav episodes thus far. Shawn and Andrew, y’all have the most amazing people on your pod, including the both of you! Gabby and Dustin, thank you for sharing your story, you two have a beautiful family! Y’all have no idea how (all 4 of you I mean, as individuals and as couples) admirable it is to not only hear y’all stand strong in your faith and be proud of it! I love it! You guys as well as the guests of your show all seem to have at least one thing in common, your faith in the Heavenly Father and love for Jesus. I wish more people were open about their faith, in whatever that may be, because we are all loved by Him! Great pod, would love to see Dustin and Gabby again. I apologize for being so mushy with this comment, but this one had me all up in my feels, just what I needed to hear today. Ty all!

This was such a great episode! As a parent of two children on the autism spectrum, it’s always so encouraging to hear from other couples walking that path. It was an unexpected blessing to hear about “dancing pants” because our 11 year old autistic son is just hitting the age where he is experiencing this…milestone…and not yet able to control it. So thanks for that🤣 I have some shopping to do!

OMG... This went by way to fast and wanted most. Please have them back on they are funny and the stories I bet they could share and educate about their foundation.
Gabby, so sorry you had to go through such a hard time but praise God you made it pass it.
I to am a 2 time survivor and was actually lock up in the TN. Mental Health Center both times. I know if it wouldn't of been for the wonder counselor they had I'd there I'd never made it if I had tried again. But, she taught a class to us about "Tomorrow" through a poem and to this day I still 20 years later still have it and will read it when I get down.
    Love Y'all and Blessings!

I really enjoyed this episode for so many different reasons. I was a teacher of LifeSkills or Functional Academics in the public school system in Texas. It has been the most rewarding career I have ever had. Dustin and Gabby really were relatable to me. I love these children. They are worthy. Society often tells us something entirely different, but society is very wrong. I learned more throughout my years from students of various disabilities than they learned from me. Texas public schools do not offer teachers many of the resources and manipulatives that these students need to have to grow. I spent approximately $20,000 of my own money for various needs my kiddos (I always refer to my students as my kiddos because I love them like they are my own). Since I am no longer in the classroom, I would love to help in gathering these items currently in my large storage to benefit other families who do not have the resources for things that help with fine motor skills necessary for these children. The best advice I can ever give parents of students with disabilities in Texas public schools in a bit two fold in a way. Firstly, if you or your child does not bond with the teacher, it will not work. There has to be trust and respect both ways. The main reason is to benefit the child. Another reason is that in ARD meetings and within areas of need for the child, the advocates for that are the parents and the teacher. If I could not obtain something a child desperately would benefit from, I would always meet with the parents bc their voice is heard louder. Special needs teachers often get no respect within the school. We are the outcasts just as much as they consider our students to be. It is unacceptable and disheartening, so, the cooperation between parents and teachers are key. Now, this will seem controversial advice to some, but I have lived it. I do not recommend testing for disabilities through the school system. I say this because if your child is tested elsewhere, you have the power. You only have to disclose what you feel is necessary. The school testing often gets your child labeled in ways you aren’t aware of. If you disclose what they need to know versus what is really just common with disabilities like ADHD and issues such as that, you spare them that label. Labeling creates money for the school. This is what I mean. I was also unaware of this until I became a SPED teacher. Many children with disabilities receive Medicaid in Texas. The school actually bills and collects profits from Medicaid for things we do as special needs teachers. If you child requires changing of a diaper, that is billed to Medicaid. If you must accompany them to regular classes, such as art, it is billed to Medicaid. The list goes on and on and it is utterly wrong. A child with disabilities may consume more of my time than a general Ed student, but as a teacher I know that and account for that time in my classroom daily. The school does not bill other students for time they need or adaptive needs they have, just these students. It’s shameful that it is used as a money making effort for the school. It would be one thing if it was used for equipment these students need, but often times the student has IEP mandated assistive devices for students that must be provided by the school, by law, that I as a teacher never actually received for a student. When I brought up this to administration, I was pushed out of the district. Know your rights. Scream them if you have to, but never give up. These kids are worth everything! Love them and spoil them! Please let them know I have items for donation.

We Americans are brutal to new moms- moms are to each other, and same with the grandmas and in laws... in other cultures... the new moms are NOT alone with new babies. The weight of conpletely caring for a new life ALL on your own is unrealistic...our society also doesn't support it because we have expectations that moms should be able to do it all and keep up with a fast paced culture or you're failing- and that's ALSO not how all developed nations do this. Women slow down because CHILDREN NEED THAT. we are sick and severely depressed... not only because something is wrong with our bodies... but also because the organization of our families and the family economicy is a MESS and we have extreme and really unhealthy expectations of ourselves and for children and other mothers. I'm sorry for what you went through. I don't believe it's your fault. I will not have another child until i have a REAL support network... the kind that will physically surround me- American society and pace be damned. Our values are messed up and we are arrogant and hurting each other and our families if we do not recognize these things. Signed, a fellow mother who has survived very severe depression.
