To those who think this is out of character for Artemis, you are correct! This is an exclusively Roman telling of Orion’s story, and Pseudo-Hyginus is the only one to write it this way. In the actual Greek myths, there are many versions and they all say either Gaia or Artemis killed him (either because he boasted about being able to slay all creatures on Earth, or because he tried to assault one of Artemis’ maidens), but none of them mention any kind of romance between them.

In another story Apollo wasn’t liking his sisters lover, whether she loves him or that she calls him heroic Apollo wants him dead. So as Orion was swimming Apollo sees his head sticking out of the water and cooks up a plan to end him. He ask his sister to test her skills by shooting at that mark (little did she know that mark out of the water was Orion’s head), she did and accidentally kills Orion. She was grief mourning the death of Orion, and was angry at her brother Apollo but she got her revenge. By shooting an arrow at his girlfriend Chione.

@@kevin-2.1 That’s the Roman story I’m talking about. Also, it was Koronis, not Chione. Although most myths say say Koronis was killed by Apollo (or Artemis) because she disrespected Apollo by having another lover, nothing to do with Orion.

Ok no the true myth goes like this: Orion, after the first meeting with Artemis, boasted about being the best Hunter ever so Apollo became jealous and overprotective over Artemis and he sent the scorpion to hunt down Orion. Of course, Orion got scared and he ran straight to the sea and then Apollo tricked Artemis into a wager: she must hit a small dot in the sea in order to prove that she was the best Hunter ever. And she did although she didn't know that the dot was actually Orion her friend. And she put his soul on the stars in order to remember him. Apollo put the scorpion right next to Orion as the constellation of the Scorpio. And that's how the myth is known. Learn it better please and don't use inaccurate information
