Video by Lam Ho Tak - sweb.cityu.edu....
This song came to me after my brothers death. He had a blog where he occasionally posted a few songs by Olafur (that would eventually become part of his funeral soundtrack)... about a week after my brothers suicide, this video had replaced another video on his blog, without explanation. It was a song I hadn’t heard before and to this day I don’t understand how it appeared. I honestly think this was his way of reaching out to give us some peace...
Amazing story! Thanks for sharing it.
I also lost my brother when we were young and there's no word I can say to express the emptiness this has left in my life and also no word I can say to try to fill the emptiness in your life. I just feel so much empathy for you in this moment.
Absolutely it was him giving you a message and an explanation. Also to let you know that even though yoi cant see him with your phyiscal eyes he is with you on a different plane
Thanks for sharing this. Your brother wants to give you peace and he wants you to think about him whenever you hear this song. This is his gift to you.
There comes a time in everyone's life where they realize a loss. I feel for you, brother. I did not lose my brother, but lost the love of my life. And I received many a sign where I knew she still existed. It is up to us to decipher these messages and take what we can from them . . . and then do something about them. Integrate them into our life. Pursue teachings that may seem obscure. Use them as evidence to validate pursuit of knowledge that seems mystical to others, and even, sometimes, foreign to ourselves
Know that you are not alone
@@rickygrewal1283 Beautiful, thank you
I came from the azula video.. Truly admire the whole concept of the music and the video
same!!!!
I want to see the azula video. Any links?

Me too. Danke

According to Lam Ho Tak, the creator of this video, Soeng (the name of the train station in the end) is the Cantonese reading of 想 - to think, dream, believe and wish. Going to Soeng means heading to your dreams, in his own words.
The song was already beautiful on its own, but combined with this video it's just pure art. I love how such a powerful message is presented simply without saying a word, that's the real beauty of art, in my opinion.
Soeng is a place in Thailand.
Fudger_ Yeah, might be. That was not his original intention but thanks for the info :)
No probs!
very good music video
I think Soeng could also mean to want
The word soeng means "so close" in german. I think the light may represent letting go or becoming "free". The number 357 (shown in the first frame 0:01) indicates that you need to let go of your self-defeating attitude and have confidence in what you can do. I think the song may be saying that the average human is so caught up in their own flaws, that they aren't letting go. I believe that when the man missed the train, which represents the way to freedom, he felt defeated, but eventually got on a new train. Stepping off of the metaphorical train, he saw the light and beauty, therefore he was "Near Light". I find that I was once very insecure and apprehensive, but now, I find myself waiting for a train that will lead me to confidence and freedom, without the constant nagging of my own flaws inside my head. To me, the song is an encouragement to stop doubting oneself and begin believing so that you can be free and confident. I like how much emotion Mr. Arnalds portrayed in this song without using lyrics, and I love dancing to it. Beautiful music video!
Wow well said. I love this video and the music. It takes me to the conclusion to relax relate release and surrender.
Just one little note: "Soeng" doesn't mean "so close" at all. Source: am german. I like the rest of your interpretation, though
Yes!
Ach, du meinst so eng, nicht soeng.
dont wanna ruin it Jess, but soeng (actually, its so eng: two words) means so tight...
Im german :)
Also nice interpretation, but the video has a meaning, also soeng. Check out the comment of PianoHaiku - he explains it very well
Why do we all love sad music so much? I think it's because it gives us permission to tap into the deepest of feelings in our inner souls and allows them to be expressed fully. This is what I feel here in this absolutely beautiful composition and performance. The combination of piano and violin gets me every single time. So beautiful!! You are a great composer and your video is very artistically and beautifully done! BRAVO!! ~Jackie
I don't find it sad ;o Rather relaxing
Classical Jams - Passionate Piano honestly my ears and my brain love it. I just wish it was longer.
***** I think it's amazing that each human can perceive music so differently....and that is the genius of it....the most powerful universal language of all :-)
fibreoptik Yes, I wish it were longer, too :-)
it's not sad, it's full of hope, love and empowerment, it's soft and beautiful, warm and giving - look at it that way, hope that helps :-)
Olafur's songs are like giving your brain a cool drink of water.
@Freedom and Art u really gonna correct him after 5 years lmaoo
@Freedom and Art you must be fun at parties

Mr. Olafur, you are the king of the introverts :) You get me with this piece. Excellent!
this song has no words, yet it speaks more than any other song.
This guy makes some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard
Kevin Crivelli so true!
Absolutely!
I agree 100%!

Every life is a destination unknown, a journey of tragedies and triumphs that ultimately allows us to discover not only our world, but more importantly... ourselves.
well said, Reinsley. I would use it to describe my dance, with which this music is played.
From a Rite Of Passage
Peace and love my lovely human soul friend
8 years ago and still one of the greatest tracks ever written
this is the sound i wish i could hear when i raise up to heaven
heaven isn't real buddy
Well, when you go up in the sky, you go into space. You don't see pearly white gates with a old man there waiting for you. Science bitch.
Cute. So many christians here believing in a false deity. I find it amusing but also sad, that the human race won't move forward because their stuck in the stone age in believing a deity that isn't there. There are many FACTS that shows his not real. Look them up. Only thing a bible is good for is for keeping for back up toilet paper when camping.
I don't care for religion. I am an Atheist. I believe in science and that our universe, space, time, animals, humans, planets. Was not created by some Magical man. Your "god" has killed more people than Hitler, Stalin and sadam. Yet you follow him? He went straight to GENOCIDE and caused "floods" that killed every living thing in it because he had a little temper tantrum. I am sorry, but your "god" has multiple personality disorder. Also he says everyone who sins goes to hell, that also means if you have sex before marriage. Or looked at porn. Or a gay. yeah. Seems like a legit god hahahahaa please. Go read a book other than the most fictional book that is the bible. And soon you will realise that Atheism and science is the way to go. Not some old man who created a UNIVERSE out of NOTHING, that also says in the bible that it is IMPOSSIBLE. So yeah. it sadden me to think the human race shall destroy this planet because of religion. Luckily, Religion is dying and people are becoming smarter and realising that a old man in a robe creating this universe. Btw, Remember to thank your surgeon / doctor when they cure you of a illness. God had nothing to do with it. You would of been dead if it wasn't for some fucker that went to university to save your pathetic life.
MrKaidalen just because you are an Atheist doesn't mean you should bash others for what they believe in. Im an Atheist too, but that doesn't give me the right to say that anybody elses religion is wrong. So feel free to shut the fuck up and pout in the corner and stop hating on others because they live the life they want.
As introverted person I always like calm and peaceful music. When I hear from others that calm music is boring, nobody wants to listen to it, I feel it is not true. There are millions of people who like it. We are not alone in the desire to hear the silence. I discovered your music several days ago and return to it every day. Thank you. You are an inspiration and support of my own fragile world.
@kaushik Do not hate. Enjoy it.
@cosmos-yz9olPlease don't hate yourself. All people live, love, and express themselves differently. That's the beauty of life. Personally, I would take a quiet, introspective soul over the loud and boisterous life of the party any day. Some of the greatest minds, musicians, writers, and artists of our time were introverts. Love yourself, friend. You're exactly who you're meant to be ❤
I remember listening to his music during my depression - it was the only thing that truly kept me close to anything beautiful. Years later, I am very grateful to this artist.
Are you still ok?
@@user-op9mv5lq1u sad but she died i guess
I feel that this song should never end. It has this vibe that gives you goosebumps whenever you hear it. Every damn time. If there's a god, when I die, please let me listen to this song for eternity so that this beautiful song gets what it deserves...
You know at first it might sound like a good idea.....but please think this through... the rest of eternity! the same song....I think you might go batshit crazy after the first few days.
it's a wish, so i agree listening to this for the eternity - with the same first time listening feeling - can be a great deal '-'
We were innocent once, Elijah. This bloodlust was forced upon us by our parents, turning us from prey to predator. We are the demons lurking in shadows. We are the savage villains in fairy tales told to children, but not for my child, not for Hope. In her story, we are the knights in shining armor. Without you by my side, I dont think I can survive my own love for my daughter. I need you. I need you, brother. The monster in me can only be checked by monster in you. Only together can we defeat our demons and save our family.
I love you :)
I'm here because of that too !!!!Great music and great scene ! :D
god i love this scene
So beautifull, reminds me and my brother :)
What is this from? I need to watch.
finding you 6 years later.... what the internet is made for, so so good.
thank you Ólafur Arnalds - off to buy your music
I was watching this show called originals.. and then this soundtrack came up... and I just had to stop everything to be able shazam this... It has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my entire life... This song... the power of music is so incredible and one of the most unique tools we can use to feel in such language thy words cannot express but throughout the sound waves that floats through the air entering our eardrums passing the vibrations in our very soul... This beautiful art can only make your body have such sensation... Music nowadays... like this one?... Are so undervalued... Markets only up for violence, sex, money, etc... But this? rarely heard... I listen to this very music happy, sad angry, scared... by so many emotions and the response it gives to my very being are all different... That’s how powerful music is... No matter what you feel it will give you a different tone to each sentiment... Such beauty and privilege... Just.. speechless.
Times when time seems unreal:
Standing in the rain by yourself
Late night walks in the pale moonlight
Listening to olafur arnalds with the volume all the way up
That beat with that melody....... Such an amazing experience!!!
Mr. Aziz, we miss you here on Earth but we know you are in a better place from where you are spotting our every rep. God bless you for being an inspiration for thousands of people. Forever mirin
This song makes me feel weightless, like flying, like I can break free of this world around us, and find myself...
Heard this song on spotify while typing up a paper. Had to share. So relaxing. Funny it starts with 3:57 on the clock. That's the time I was born.
+Patricia Esposito But this video's length is 3:29?
The clock in the video says 3:57. Not taking about the length of the video.
+Patricia Esposito Let me guess, you were pushing the deadline and needed more music to listen to. You go on Spotify playlists thinking, I need to focus, and I want to be calm. Ended on the atmospheric calm playlist and did exactly the same as myself?
+Hirohamster2 Nope. I never wait till the last minute to do anything. I get things done right away so I have more time for fun and relaxation lol.
Patricia Esposito I see.
The first time this song came up, I listened and didn't see the video but it gave me this profound feeling of loneliness. Then I saw the video and realized it fully encapsulates what it's like to wake up early for work before everyone else, before the sun, and drag yourself to get ready and head to the bus stop in the dark, then the train... even if other people are around, it feels so isolating.
I heard this on an amazing Olafur concert some months ago and I knew long before that I would cry the whole song long. It was so touching. Thank you Olafur ❤

my favourite song these days.
Nine years later and this song still brings a tear to my eye.
Each moment experienced is a new feeling. A new thought. Each note is played to give meaning and a reason to be, to involve you in the music.
It is a piece that I could never truly let go of.
It's an absolute wonder how music can really speak to the soul. This song, along with the clip, just portrays the right amount of contrast to what and how I'm and have been feeling and although it has no words, it speaks rite to me. Amazing.
Heard this music on The Originals for the first time. Still watching the series and hearing all the music. This is still a moving and a emotional feeling song. 💖
Sheer perfection. About as beautiful as music can get. The impact of the one piano note at the 1:40 mark is beyond description.
Anyone else get that melancholic nostalgia down their spines? Almost like chills but feels deeply comforting...
This song is nearly perfection!!! The first time I heard it, it sent me into complete bliss! I'm so grateful for Olafur's music. It truly is a peaceful blissful masterpiece!!!! 🌄🌠❤️💓💖😊😘🥰😍
This song is a masterpiece ...my favorite so far
one of my favorite songs is near light because I used to put it on my pregnant wife. Now that our son was born, he put it on and he cries and my wife and I look at him. the 3 of us cry, we don't know what it is, but it drags us to its feeling. I hope I have that gift of feeling like you do and one day I will create something as beautiful as you did for us. thank you for such beautiful melodies. we are from Mexico Baja California.
In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by, Dreaming as the summers die:
Ever drifting down the stream- Lingering in the golden gleam- Life, what is it but a dream?
-Lewis Carroll
Its my daughter favorite song in addition to Living Room Songs. It tears up my eyes whenever I listen to it, wishing she is near to me now. Love it.
Well I guess I found my favorite sad song to listen to when I'm contemplating all the shitty things in life. I thank The Originals.
+Kanji Panda HAHAHAHAHA
listening to this song will put you an endless loop about sadness
Interesting, and understandable. I usually listen to this and music like this when I'm in a positive mood. Both in looking forward to things and in a reflective capacity. I just feel energized mentally after listening to this.
+Christopher James I can relate completely
Kanji Panda it's not a sad song
It's a beautiful song
First heard this song on our wedding video due to our amazing videographer. Instantly fell in love and of course this song has a special place in my heart! I can't imagine anyone not loving Olafur Arnalds' music.
Congratulations on your wedding!
There's no words how beautiful it is.
This song is so powerful, it touches me on every emotional base. Powerful enough to keep my anger from becoming rage. Powerful enough to keep my rage in check. Powerful enough to possibly bring me to tears . I am truly grateful for hearing this masterpiece. It feeds my mind, soul, just my entire being. I feel a sense of hope and peace listening to this divine melody.
My heart is touched in its deepest corners
What I think Olafur was able to do, was capture our feelings, he helps us relate to music, in a unique way. Whether its ideas, I think something must of really motivated him to be this creative with his music. There is something wonderful happening.
“Soeng”, a Cantonese direct translate of a Chinese character “想”. It means think, dream, believe and wish. Going to Soeng mean heading to your dream.
When I'm having a really fucked up day, I put this on and distance myself from everyone and allow this to take me somewhere else, such an amazing piece of music along with everything else this man does...
This song is so powerful, it touches me on every emotional base. Powerful enough to keep my anger from becoming rage. Powerful to keep me rage In check. Powerful enough to possibly bring me to tears. I receive some sense of hope and peace from this song. I'm truly grateful to have heard this!
+La Sombra de la luz I know how you feel, sort of...If I'm in a bad mood b/c I got stressed at work, after I'm off work and waiting for my ride, I plug in my headphones and listen to it, and it helps me calm down.

I am truly convinced that is the sole purpose of this masterpiece. I hope it helps to soothe your soul as much as it does mine. :-)
Cannot believe the sounds I am hearing.
It takes you away to another world.
This has to be one of my favorite songs of all time.
this track is pure, perfect , beauty... mad respect to Ólafur Arnalds .

My last solo as a teen (ages 13-15, I’m a competitive dancer) was to this song. Back in April, I won. I was the divisional winner for Intermediate Teen Solos. I loved this song so much, and the routine.
listened to this on repeat for hours so i could finish my weekly work report - it helps to get things done, without me tearing my hair out. Then come here to check out the video, the first image showed up, printing out the annual reports, and all the post-it notes of meetings, etc. quite interesting!
thank you for letting the world listen to this amazing song, it is soooo beautiful
Thank you! This song is helping me go through one of the toughest moments in my life

We are all here united through our pain and suffering..
I used this song in a video tribute to my mother at her funeral and I find it devastating to this day. Sadly I can't listen to it anymore.
Q sea como recuerdo de tu madre, yo tb tengo algo asi de mi abuelita, siempre q puedo escucho una canción q le gustaba a ella😢, y me hace recordarla😊, y me lleno de alegría ❤
I’m crying so much , this peace is so beautiful.
I think is the best olafur composition... When I have an overthinking period, I usually listen this composition to looking for a mind peace... Thanks Olafur
This song really is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. Saw Olafur in Lucerne (Switzerland) last year - live even better than in the videos. This song is written from the soul for soul searchers. He has the capacity to reach your inner personality with each song as Olafur or Kiasmos - trespassing in music but aligned in spirit. Great genius- thank you
0:53 the tears just started flowing. this song is so emotional, so beautiful but it evokes some sadness in me. Can't stop listening tho.
someone said “if you could go back in time, would you change anything?” and he said “actually i’d fast forward time, to see if its worth it in the end” and this became my favorite quote
Still thinking about you Aziz. You may not have been a perfect role model but one thing that is for sure, you changed the way I used to look at life in a more positive way. I adopted a healthy lifestyle because of you and for that I thank you. I will forever be mirin.
Good bye good sir.

Just wondering. How did he inspire you to live a healthy lifestyle when he himself used to live such a roid infested life doing drugs everyday. His own death was the result of that. No offense to Zyzz I mean he did have a sick physique mirin but I wouldn't consider him as a role model for healthy bodybuilding lifestyle.
Zyzz bruh! We’re all gonna make it
just finished watching this video and realized about the time my mom would tell that "life's beautiful hon" .. and that every moment is worth living .. but seeing this .. i am but bound to ask the most basic question of all times : "is this IT??" is this what life's suppose to be ?? or this is only a sad story of a person who looses his inner light with every passing minute just because of routine .. can dreaming be the only way to escape reality ???
I revisit this beautiful song and awesome video every few months since 2014 and it’s always new.. 🙏🏽
So true! 💖
100 times is just little to tell you, I think more than that 100 times I have been hearing and watching the video, the graphics are very well done in a modern simple way, full of meaning easy to understand , and the title near light tells me how my own world is much better with your music.

Watching this after my previous employer consolidated their losses due to poor leadership decisions and liquidated their staff.
