  • I was born on this mountain a long time ago
Before they knocked down the timber and strip-mined the coal
When you rose in the mornin' before it was light
To go down in that dark hole and come back up at night
I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home
She holds me and keeps me from worry and woe
Well, they took everything that she gave, now they're gone
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home
I was young on this mountain but now I am old
And I knew every holler, every cool swimmin' hole
Til one night I lay down and woke up to find
That my childhood was over and I went down in the mine
I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home
She holds me and keeps me from worry and woe
Well, they took everything that she gave, now they're gone
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home
There's a hole in this mountain and it's dark and it's deep
And God only knows all the secrets it keeps
There's a chill in the air only miners can feel
There're ghosts in the tunnels that the company sealed
I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home
She holds me and keeps me from worry and woe
Well, they took everything that she gave, now they're gone
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home
Steve's performance of "The Mountain" from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2005. My favorite version of my favorite song.

I absolutely love this haunting song. Steve Earle is one of the best songwriters of our time. I live in the mountains, and my husband's grandfather died of black lung disease. This song tells the story of coal miners, but the beauty of the mountains is also evoked in the lines "I knew every holler / every cool swimming hole" and "This mountain's my home / and it holds me and keeps me from worry and woe."

Steve was the opener for CSN that night. As the show went on it was obvious it was going over time but Claude Nobbs ( Montrex promoter ) and CSN were on the side of the stage. They all said play on , so Steve did, it was a truly great night! ( I was his TM and looking after his guitars on stage left. )

My dad was a miner and he made sure his 11 kids got educated and never went near a mine. We all gladly left the shit hole of a town we grew up in. No sentimental bollocks. That aside, great song and I think Steve Earle is brilliant.

It makes my heart yearn for home on the Durham coal fields in NE England. It's a universal song for all the men that ever ventured down a coal mine. Dirty dangerous work that unified communities and kept families alive. Wonderful song.

This song gives me chills still after hundreds of times listening. I have spun this disc in the cd player so many times the laser 'bout wore a hole in it! Have the LP now and it sounds soooo good. Good job Steve pairing with the legendary Del McCoury band. This album will go down in history as one of the best bluegrass albums of all times. I dont know how you do it Steve. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world.

I'm glad I found this masterpiece of Steve Earle's songwriting. I got here after listening to Sierra Ferrell's inspired promotional cover video. The song is both beautiful and fierce . . . of lament and love.
