I had the privilege of seeing the Waterson family in person twice in Berkeley Ca and Mike Waterson did John Barleycorn. Nobody could sing it like Mike and he sang it acapella. This is pretty nice too.
Always surprised that Eliza doesnt tear someone's kecks off and demand his undivided attention. There's so much pent up passion there, one could make toast!
*Billy Bragg! Miss U my brother 'ore the pond. Our philosophies were married long ago. Champion on kind brother and hail the fine musicians!* *All power to the working class*
QUESTION: Can someone refer me to any recording of the song that predates Steeleye Span's 1972 version? And here, I'm speaking of the melody. Maybe the lyrics too, but primarily the melody.
Probably the oldest recorded English folk tune, evolved and continues to evolve, but let's hope "Little Sir John" remains the same,.....same again please.
Clearly these are lyrics he has written to play with the format. A classic folk tradition to mix and match the words per event. There are no words to learn, only the song. Either way he's holding a sheet, it's what you do

Doesn't Duke William now live in a rather expensive property on the coast somewhere? He left the working class behind a long time ago.
Billy improves as he goes along, a bit like beer as I keep on drinking, Here's to John Barleycorn!
What - you mean, he gets flatter?
Martin Carthy and daughter Eliza
Hobgolin, Steve Winwood has the best version EVER.
Thanks. Will check it out.
Willows Drum version was really good. Thanks for the information.
Nobody credits Traffic for English folk rock - shame.
allan james Traffic were amazing.
Steve learned it from my uncle Mike Waterson 🙂
Ha. Was just about to commit that this version sounded to me like Indian classical music....and then the camera cut to the sitar.
The nimrods down thread bitching about Billy Bragg reading the words can't even tell that these are the verses that, by invitation, he WROTE, FFS.

The Watersons on their album 'Frost and fire' of 1965. A.L.Lloyd even earlier.
Thanks, going to check it out.
Traffic in 1970.
best song about brewing beer ever, Steeleye Span did the best version though.
RIP Simon Emmerson,

Anyone know if there's an audio recording available of this session?
Sadly no x
But who is that beautiful girl sitting there?
If you mean the one with the long dark hair drinking tea, that would be me, waiting to do The Welcome Sailor from the same album.
Give Billy B a break, on the album his part was taken by Paul Weller.
Billy's inclusion and justification comes after 6 minutes
Billy you should have learnt the lyrics
Much better without Billy Bragg... As you also knew!
Great version and fabulous musicians... but Billy Bragg reading off the lyrics from a piece of paper! That doesn't sit well...
Shame on you Billy Bragg
Why shame?
Billy Bragg... stick to what you're good at.
@Duc de Richleau No one knows. Rest of the band are awesome though.
This is exactly what he's good at. I love it, the love there for what he does
So embarrassing! Never learnt the words.
Yep, shame. I love Billy Bragg, but he's fallen a little short here.
This was shot during rehearsals for the tour. Paul Weller sang it on the album so I'd guess everyone has to learn at some point....

Err.. in this case the words are fairly important.
@@Wotsitorlabart that's why he wrote new ones. New lyrics for a new England ;)
