    My name is Luigi Gonzales and I am a recent graduate of the University of Souther California Class of 2020. Currently, I am in the middle of my medical school application cycle but I will be attending a medical school in August of 2021 (subscribe to find out where I will be going!).     So I'm not actually a medical student (I'm applying to English PhD programs) but I like these type of videos and I just wanna say I really appreciate how thorough this was. You putting your GPA and MCAT and also including scores for the schools was so informative and I appreciate that. I never really see people including that info in videos but it makes it much more interesting.

    Wow, very happy for you. I am indeed one of those who have every part of them wanting and yearning to go into medicine, yet I might say with diverse barriers such as financial support don't know if it would be possible. All the same inspired by your perseverance.

    Thanks for revealing this man. A lot of people don't and I understand and respect their privacy, but you got some good stats and still got rejected from like 90% of them. Damn, I am in the same boat bruv.

      When I was applying, I wished I could see the stats of people who were accepted so I wanted to provide that value to future applicants! My most important tip would be to avoid comparing yourself to other people when you're applying and just focus on doing your best! You got this!

      Those are just the averages! People can get into medical school with lower numbers than those so don't worry too much about it and just do your best!

      Thank you! That experience was definitely very different from applying to college because all medical schools have high averages so there's really not a lot of options to be considered as "safety" schools! There are DO schools with lower averages but thats a whole other application and more payments so I just decided to not apply to those haha

    Jefferson and Drexel are both really hard to get in both undergrad and Med school. Hopefully I get in one once I graduate undergrad school. They’re both back at home.

      Both schools are really good! I think it’s an achievement to get accepted to any med school! It’s a bigger plus if the school is closer to home. Let me know if you have any questions about applying to med school and I’ll be glad to help!

    I bet the process gets way less stressful once you get that first acceptance. Hopefully I get that first acceptance so I dont have to stress. Also what were the timing of your interviews? All early like before December or did some contact you a little later?

      It definitely gets way better! The residents and fellows that I’ve talked to say that getting into med school is the toughest filter! Once you’re past that it’s all about trying to survive so you’re not really fighting with your peers for spots as much!
      Some of my interviews were before December! I had 2 before December and 3 after I think!

    God this really shows you how hard it is to get accepted to medical school despite you having a good MCAT score and good grades. My dads friend has a daughter who is finding a hard time getting in a medical school even if she had a good score and good grades.

      That’s what i think too! I think it’s important for people to get an idea of the reality of how difficult it actually is and what it takes before they waste thousands of dollars applying and being rejected!

    Hey I’m a usc undergrad and saw your profile pic. Do you think that admissions officers favored you for going to USC? I feel like I could have gone to my state school and easily got a straight 4.0

      That's something that I still wonder to this day. I am honestly not sure how heavy medical schools weigh the prestige of your undergraduate school. I do know that a high GPA and high MCAT score should be priority but going to USC has to help. I think they understand if your GPA isn't a 4.0. I think it helped for me because even though I didn't have a high GPA or MCAT, I was still able to get interviews to multiple schools!
      But at this point, I don't think you should focus on that! You're at USC so just do your best to get good grades while maintaining a healthy study-life balance!

    Why didn't you apply to UC Davis Medical School? Also, the only way you could probably get into Hawaii as an out-of-state student is if you were Native Hawaiian. They tend to give preferences for that.

      I didn’t think I’d be happy living around the area where UCD is at! Also they mentioned having strict guidelines as to who they accept so I just thought that it wasn’t worth applying there!

    I thought private universities don't really give an in-state advantage like Stanford or USC. I was always under the impression public state universities have the major in-state resident preference.

      Yeah public universities for sure have IS preferences but privates not as much! For privates, they typically don’t have preferences but it’s based on each school. If you look at the data, it still turns out that there’s a bigger amount of accepted students from Cali for both USC and Stanford!

Because I was reading an article of this guy who got acceptance to schools like NYU, Columbia, Havard, and a bunch of other medical schools and all he said was that he showed commitment to his extracurriculars and showed how they were all meaningful to him so That’s what I’ve been wondering about the med school application process if that it is needed to have a bunch of extracurriculars

    How do you find out if a school has an in state preference? Is it sort of word of mouth

      When you’re about to apply, there’s a website that you can pay a subscription for that states how many applicants applied to the school in the past year and how many were accepted from the home state vs out of state

      Yeah! I've just heard a lot about Loma Linda and the religious component of it as well as certain rules and regulations that they have. I didn't do my research to confirm but I didn't think I needed to add it on since I was already applying to 30+ schools!

      I started getting interview invites around December! I know some people got interview invites earlier and some later, which made the whole process very stressful!

    GeorgeTown and Dartmouth are considered "low tier" medical schools that are easier to get accepted to? Are you sure?

      Georgetown Average Acceptance Stats: 3.6 GPA + 512 MCAT
      Dartmouth Average Acceptance Stats: 3.77 + 516 MCAT
      Compared to the ivy leagues and other well known West/East Coast schools, the acceptance stats for Georgetown and Dartmouth are lower! All medical schools are hard to get into, these schools just have lower averages than other!

      It’s true. It’s the wildest thing. Here in Louisiana it’s easier to get into Tulane than it is LSUHSC. That’s absolutely unheard of with undergrad. I would be unbearably grateful to get into either one. Tulane has a level 1 trauma center

      You never know what could happen! I know people who had lower stats and got into better med schools! Just focus on your personal statement and your extracurricular activities. You can also do a gap year or do a master’s program!

      I actually don’t think I applied to UCDavis because I wasn’t too big of a fan of the rural environment of UCDavis! Nothing against the school tho!

      @@LuigiGonzales the UCDavis med school is actually located in Sacramento so it’s not rural at all haha. But you’d be right to not apply because they have heavy regional bias for primary care.
      (Also I did my undergrad at UCDavis, Davis is a small college town but no way is it “rural”😅)

    Im guessing your application was nothing but a list of classes and research you did. They don't want you to list your resume, they want to know your personality, interests. What instruments you play, hobbies you do, what you care about. Your gpa and mcat score were way higher than a lot of people who get in, it had to have been your application that got you rejected.
