Hahaha! Yuzu is savage yes! His English improved a lot over the years. He actually tried to speak Spanish and Korean too. (Nathan also tried Spanish). Wanted to include in this video but couldn't fit in. Will find time to make part 2 for other languages.. Actually it's quite hard for Japanese to learn English as these 2 languages are just so different (grammar and pronunciation, language structure wise). Also the culture. Japanese are more shy and reserved to express their personal opinion. It would help if they stay in other countries for an extended period. With Shoma training in Europe now, he probably could speak English soon haha
Anna is amazing for her age, its not only skill but confidence to speak in foreign language. Evgenia was also really good. Russian ladies again show how hard-working they are👌🏻
Most of the top Russian Ladies speak some English. Liza Tukt is pretty fluent as well. I have not seen Sasha Trusova speak English yet. Anna is the most impressive.
Ok but Mr Jason was so kind for making sign wishing yuzu a speedy recovery. He's a competitor and yuzu not being there was one less person to compete against but in the spirit of sportsmanship he wished for a talented skater like yuzu to be healthy again. That's remarkable
Jason Brown is such a darling! And Yuzu being sulky about being left out of the video game night! So cute. Overall, they all seem like such great people to be around. Adorable.
Haha yes! Jason Brown is really so sweet. Hope he really become an English teacher after he retired from skating. Surely he will be a super popular teacher :) Yuzu is.. how do we put it? If there is a scale of cuteness from 0-10, his cuteness will be 100 and broke that scale 😂😜
Thing is, Yuzuru's grammar is quite good. At this point, he's probably used to listening to English because his comprehension level, even without a translator is very good. However, I think the problem is that he did not have many chances to practice language production (actually speaking it) especially outside of the skating context, that he kinda withdraws when asked to speak English. Some learners are okay with language production knowing that they'll make mistakes. However, some learners prefer to speak well without mistake whenever they speak because they want their intention to come across every time. This second type of learner is usually slower when it comes to learning how to speak. They just take their time to internalize things and will learn to imitate others in their own time. The struggle is actually in the hesitation to actually speak and having the vocabulary to work with.
Same for me, I could understand English and write it but i was too scared to talk because I would have made mistakes. So going to england with and talking to other students really helped me unblock it if you can say that
And I think it’s also because passive learning process comes before active learning . You read, write and understand before you speak. This « silence » period has no average duration and depends on the learners of the language.
I completely agree. I'm one of those "slow learners". I didn't dare to speak English for a long time, but once I did, I basically was already on a C1 level and earned the Advanced certificate just 2 months later.
Me in the second type trying to learn in Japanese… so very hard! Language class is very formal and then what you actually hear in Japan is something else. 🤦🏽♀️
I know that these athletes are learning new languages the more they travel and meet different people. But watching Evgenia speak japanese, or Misha speak mandarin just made my jaw drop. Plus it was so cute to see Yuzu and russian skaters try speaking english.
The fact that Yuzu caught that "is" he used and changed it to "was" is a good indication that he has a pretty good grammar awareness, it's just that his production is still limited most probably because he doesn't have much chance to practice haha

I just spent like 5 minutes watching the first minute over and over again because I realized that Yuzu and Shoma start counting with their hand open and I do it with my hand closed lol.
He could hardly speak English until high school. And he said he wasn't good at speaking English. But he made an effort. Few top Japanese athletes can speak English. But he worked hard and got a communication tool. So, while Japanese players are getting together and talking in Japanese at the figure exhibition, he is the only one who feels free to communicate with players from many countries. That leads to why he is loved.
As a languages enthusiast, I really enjoyed this video! Plz take a look at Canadian former skater Kevin Reynold. It impressed me how fluent he is in Japanese, perfect accent and pronounce. Jason Brown is at the same level as Yusuru's English, but we can see they're both improving and doing their best. I asked my husband (who is Taiwanese, while I'm Japanese) about Misha Ge's Chinese skills and he told me it is perfect, native level (which is not a surprise as Misha Ge lives in China as his father is a Chinese former skater). However, about the Chinese-Americans, it seems like only Vincent Zhou speaks in a fluent level.
Wow thanks for the suggestions. Will go and check out on kevin Reynold. Didn’t know he speaks fluent Japanese haha :) Mirai Nagasu also speaks fluent Japanese (too fluent that it lost the fun of it and doesn’t fit in the theme of this video haha). Will try to make another video of skaters who speak fluently on another language next. So would definitely check out Kevin Reynold :) And yes Misha’s chinese carries very strong Beijing accent (which is kinda standard mainland Chinese accent) as he spent around his 10-19 years old there. There’s a lot of fun interaction between him and Boyang and people watching were Super impressed as he doesn’t sound like foreigner at all, total native :) and u r so right, only Vincent speaks fluent Chinese out of the trio. But his chinese has more southern accent rather than the northern accent like Misha’s. Karen’s chinese is very taiwanese also, people can tell. She’s just lack of vocabs. Whereas Nathan, uhm.. haha reports said that his parents didn’t speak Chinese with him at all as his parents wanted to learn English themselves. So they speak English at home. So.. but Nathan is learning Spanish now. He hasn’t tried speaking it in public. English is my first language. My mother is French, so I know enough of the language to have a conversation. But if you put me on live TV, I would probably freak out! Haha. I loved at the Beijing Olympics when Nathan Chen told the Chinese reporter who was asking him questions, "My Chinese isn't very good," because he's so used to speaking English. I totally understood that. It's different speaking another language with family versus on television.
Amazing ! It's important to get the most of communication. I'm Chinese and Japanese speaker but speak English not well. I like international events if I'm forced to say I hope that all human is family. But we're have the language barrier English, Chinese...I think English and Chinese are going to be common languages. It was so common as to be normal.🥺l love figure skating and hope peace in the world. Please pray for world.
Thank you for the nice comment. Let's hope everyone can cheer for everyone, regardless of the nationality which often become a barrier for mankind. Figure skating is the only sport I ever experienced such kind of cheers regardless of nationality. I still remember an event I went to, there's a Japanese lady who sat beside me, carrying a big bag of different flags. When Korean skaters came, she waived the Korean flag and cheered in Korean. When Russian skaters skated, she took out Russian flag from her bag and shouted "Davay". Then when Japanese skaters came, she took out the Japanese flag and shouted the loudest "がんばれ”. That's such a beautiful moment. English is already the common language in the world. Chinese is too hard to learn for foreigners, even though China is getting more and more powerful, but most Chinese people, especially the young generation are learning English. With AI empowered translation becoming more and more accurate, I guess there won't be any change coming soon, that English will be the only common language in the world..
This video made me laugh to death :DDD Your storytelling skills are amazing! Side note: And then they say most Russians hardly speak English... check these figure skaters doing it so great!!
Yuzuru:What! When did i say yes??!
THIS WAS SO FUNNY, I CAN'T.
Evgenia’s English is so good!
Jason is so aww
Muchísimas gracias por la traducción en español.

El mio tambien
It makes me happy to see Japanese-speaking players.
The Japanese they speak is really cute and good.
Thank you for your love of Japan👍❤️
I would like to mention that Japanese lady translator who is in this video and at almost all of the press conferences, she is doing an amazing job, I really appreciate her translations. I am a translator too and I always admire her how well she can translate from Japanese to English!
I love her! She helped so many fans around the world like myself to understand what the Japanese skaters think first hand ❤️❤️
@@FigureSkatingFan Yes, I am very grateful to her too because she can convey and formulate Yuzu's thoughts so well in English. And she knows all the figure skating expressions as well! :D
11:20 I'm not crying 😭😭😭 just like yuzu did♥️♥️♥️
Arigatou for this video ♥️
Haha! Yuzu counting languages Misha speak was so so cute! When we watched that 3 years ago, we thought that was super cute and always wanted to make a meme / video out of it and finally did haha! Thanks for watching. Remember to share the video and subscribe :)
@@FigureSkatingFan Yes hahaha and also when he sarcastically said he was left out and alone 😂😂 This boy is super addictive 😣♥️
@@binoeearefin7730 OMG I also found that part super cute! Watching him (and his interaction with other skaters) is so addictive! At first I just like his skating (I started watching him since his Seimei program in 2015, and that program was addictive). Then I saw these videos of his cute interaction.. It's so funny and like u said - addictive! haha :)
@@chunghuey113 woww you're following him for a long time! ♥️Yea I love his seimei performance too♥️ To be honest sometimes I get a bit confused, like is it okay to be jealous of someone I fangirl!?😶 I'm truly obsessed with him and at the same time jealous of him😣♥️♥️
@@binoeearefin7730 Haha same here! Been there, done that! Especially when I was on the ice (I learnt figure skating on my own by watching RUclips since 2013 by watching these figure skaters) and realize it's not easy. Even to fall on the ice like them it's impossible for me to do (Coz I can't even rotate my body like they do when they are doing the jumps haha). At that time I was jealous of them. But after awhile I realize it's unfair for me to wanna do like them because they had been training since super young and by the time they are at their levels, they must have spent at least 10-20,000 hours on ice (Probably more) As the saying goes, you should never judge a fish by its ability to climb the trees. So I just learn to appreciate and get inspiration from what they are doing, while discovering what I like in my life (Travel and adventure for example) and what I'm good at (Language, Numbers and finance for example :)) Hope you will find something you love to do and are actually good at doing one day too!!! Gambatte :)
uwu yuzu is so cute

Yeah we are learning different languages as well and definitely understand their pain! And love them! So adorable! Please share it. Thank you :)) 💕
Yuzuru's "tian tian jiayou" at the end had me
Super fun video, it was very funny, keep 'em coming 😁😁😊

3:44 he's so cute hahaha FOR THE POOH!
Yuzuru Hanyu - the cutest figure skater we ever have in the world 😆
Jason is the sweetest person ever
He’s that friend we all wanna have in lives 😃💕
English is my first language. My mother is French, so I know enough of the language to have a conversation. But if you put me on live TV, I would probably freak out! Haha. I loved at the Beijing Olympics when Nathan Chen told the Chinese reporter who was asking him questions, "My Chinese isn't very good," because he's so used to speaking English. I totally understood that. It's different speaking another language with family versus on television.
as someone that is bilingual in English and Japanese I feel for Hanyu-san 😅
I love Yuzuru lol
6:26 This is the first time I saw this interview and it’s funny to me now how after Satton gave the (。•ω´• b)OK!, Jason still spelled Yuzu’s name wrong. 😂 Jason’s sign really was heart-warming tho~.
Honestly, my dream is to be a translator and to go around the world translating things for people like when it comes to seiyuu events or figure skating; and if it means I can be standing next to Yuzu, sign me up xD (for context, I can speak English, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish :D)
は次のように翻訳されます "I dream of becoming a teacher because I was studying Japanese so much in Japan."
i love this vid so much >
Cutest skaters :)))
yuzu when asked to speak english: please don't
Jason Brown is such a big sweetheart, please😭
Gracias por las traducciones al castellano 👍🏻
