I was fortunate enough to meet Hayley Mills about a decade ago in SoCal. She was very nice and happened to be seated in the same row as Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury and Christy Carlson Romano.
I don’t consider this a spanking. She’s patting her bottom in an encouraging way to go up the stairs. She’s not doing it any harder than what basketball players do to each other.
@chickupboom770 Well I’m young, I’m in my early 30s so I suppose I might be considered a member of a modern audience and I don’t think it’s weird.a lot of people tend to make a problem out of nothing anymore.
@@escape7557yeah I think the “news” makes it seem that almost everyone is over sensitive these days. The number of overly sensitive people have gone up due to tv, social media, politicians, MIC and other large corporations but I don’t think it’s as much as most people think. I see those people on tv or whatever but hardly ever in real life
Love this movie. Perfect casting. Disney was cranking out some gems up until the early 90s. I would consider white fang, the last great, live action Disney film.
Maggie's mistake here was following up her decisive, "Of course she is!" with a tentative, "...aren't you??" Haley Mill's wicked grin is clearly the face of an opponent who realizes the enemy blinked first!
Early teenage years is the worst time for your twin daughters to find out they have been shafted. Forget about rebellion you have an insurrection on your hands. Grandfather Charles Ruggles would be the only one they would listen to.
@@scarohar2972 Indeed ! There definitely was a good old fashioned smackaroo. In re-watching the clip just now, I realized that I don't think it's ever explained why these two American teenage girls speak with a British accent. The "magic of he movies", I suppose....ha ha ! @@jubalcalif9100 Maureen was usually the one being spanked in movies but she could probably give one hell of a spanking. It is fun seeing her giving the spanking here. Just two swats to Hayley's bottom but you can hear them. Hayley's bottom even jiggles a bit.
@UCZ9behCcez-q7A53WLJqwdw Actually, you make an xlnt point ! It all happens so fast that Maureen indeed may have smacked Haley's bottom in an ad lib moment. Oh yes, I'm sure she had previously given her daughter spankings, being conservative and strict looking...totally agree with you there too ! If Brian Keith's character had married his girlfriend, she'd be a stepmom that would have no problem with spanking her stepdaughters (in a later camping scene she urges Brian to spank them for misbehaving. He declines, saying they're too old for that). Thank you very much for your insightful comments ! :-)
@@scarohar2972 Yes ! Maureen was on the receiving end of one of cinema's most famous spankings in "McClintock !"; given by none other than her good friend & frequent co-star John Wayne. And yes, since Maureen was a no nonsense strong willed individual with a fiery Irish temper, I'm sure she'd give out powerful spankings to those who needed it ! Hayley's characters in this movie certainly were quite bratty at times; I'm sure the camp director wanted to paddle them both for the shenanagins they pulled at that summer camp ! :-)
There is so much about this movie that makes it my favorite. I have seen this film hundreds of times. It's a must watch for me every few months. I choose not to watch the remake because it doesn't even compare to this classic.
@@behindmyblueeyes99 I've seen the remake, but I feel differently about it. I choose not to watch that version. I respect your opinion and thanks for your reply.
@@edithsmith668John I've watched both. I think both versions have their appeal. The 1961 version focuses more on the adults rather than the kids. The twins also didn't have starkly different personalities so it was difficult to tell them apart. Certain scenes in the 1961 version also didn't age well and don't translate well to modern day audiences (vicky slapping the girls, the grandmother being cold, mean, and overly authoritarian, physical abuse and toxicity between mitch and maggie). The 1998 version focuses more on the twins and gave them very distinct personalities that made the audience easily tell them apart. You also never saw the parents fight or argue in the 1998 version. I like both versions equally but for different reasons.
I agree 100% this is classic. Brian Keith and Maureen O’ Hara are perfect as the parents and Hayley Mills and Susan Henning were good as the daughters. Also loved the grandparents and Verbena and Hecky. Some things you just can’t remake and this was one of em.
That's clever. You only see one child's face and the back of the other's head. Maybe they shot the scene twice with Hayley Mills and her 'twin' exchanging roles and then edited it in fragments. I wonder who the other girl was...
It is somewhat funny that Mitch is just quietly staying out of this. And then when his ex requests he “dp something,” that’s when he attempts to make an effort. :p
I thought teh mother was just terrible in this version. She was short-tempered, punched the dad in the eye and was mean spirited with the girlfriend. I get why they divorced.
I can assure you.....having received several real ones.....that is just a swat......not a spanking. When the old man takes off his belt.....or the school Principal pulls out the "board of education" then were talking spanking.
It’s very odd, the fixation on “spanking” when it’s not spanking at all. Why choose to post this scene in such a context? Odd. Are you trying to make some kind of weird moral judgment? As if everyone doesn’t already know that the parenting techniques of the 1960’s are largely obsolete?
I can see why they created the 90s version... this version did not age well at all. Maureen O'hara was the only one that kept this version remotely watchable.
@@joewhitehead3 certain parts of the movie wouldn't translate well to modern audiences.... like when Vicki slapped the girls at the camp ground or how Mitch and Maggie fight all the time and make light of domestic violence that occurred between the two of them.

Maureen O'Hara was stunningly beautiful.
She surely was
Brian Keith was perfect for this role too.
Yes she was!
She’s a GODDESS!!!!🤤🥴😍😍😍😍😍
She was very glamorous!
I love the Maureen O'Hara / Brian Keith chemistry.
“Tough to tell, ain’t it?”
“Ain’t it?”
“Isn’t it!”
"Now stop all this foolishness. We're going to miss the plane."
"That's the whole idea!"
“Mitch… DO something!”
In this version, the wife is definitely more beautiful than the wicked girlfriend.
I think also in the 1998 version as well. Natasha Richardson is beautiful and charming.
The 1998 Mom, on the other hand, looked like Princess Diana.
I don’t consider this a spanking. She’s patting her bottom in an encouraging way to go up the stairs. She’s not doing it any harder than what basketball players do to each other.
I agree!
I agree but to modern audiences, this would be a bit of an eyebrow raiser.

McLintock showed two spankings, both with coal shovels.
Sharon/Susan: Are you sure she’s Sharon?
Maggie: Of course she is! Aren’t you?

This was the cutest movie ever made. Hayley Mills was adorable.
