I like how he senses the atmosphere. Notice how Victoria makes a joke that doesn't sit well with Carol, the camera zooms in on Carol being disgusted, but Ignacio immediately makes a joke to take the embarassing attention away from Carol (29:50). This is someone you want on your team.

Ignacio was SHARP! Quick, smart and full of witty references. Hope to see him again.

Also very accommodating. I think Victoria must have asked him how to pronounce Ignacio but not López, because she used a northern Spanish lisp on his first name and a southern Spanish / Hispanic American sibilant on his surname, but he sat quietly and didn't correct her.
Same! I've never seen him before and he was great. Even really funny people are not always a home run their first time on the show but he was just on fire. Can't wait to see more of him.

Yeah, I was not really looking at the score panels when VCM was telling the scores (because who cares bout score in a panel show), so I was completely blindsided by that credits sequence, and had to roll back to see that yeah, she did say the scores wrong. Cracked up for several seconds non stop XD

I've been noticing the scores on this show for a long time, for no good reason, and it feels like Ian's team almost never wins, so I was vaguely upset for him, and then the commentary killed me.
vcm is so great. if they’re were to have a permanent host she definitely would have my vote
But then she'd have less time to craft her wonderful humor for Only Connect. Not worth the trouble.

You see a lot of players with massive egos, and maybe he's got one too, but that was a real, ordinary guy moment, kinda like waiting his turn for 11 hours to pay respects to the queen. He seems to be making an effort to stay real.

Thanks so much for uploading HIGNFY so fans like me in the U.S. can see it! I watch both the regular and extended versions, and by now I recognize most of the Brit pols and get most of the jokes about them. Victoria is a great host whenever she's on, and I always look forward to Paul and Ian's wit.
Love Carol for bringing out the reference to Generations, one of the lesser regarded Star Trek movies.
AND Victoria Coren Mitchell produced a baby just a few weeks after this recording on October 26 at the age of 51! Remarkable!

Hate to break it to you, but the show is rehearsed.
Ignacio is half Welsh and based in Cardiff, so he probably didn't need much of a briefing 😊
The rehearsal is just for the host to go over the scripted parts, especially if there are any props involved. The panelists aren't there.@@obscurazone

Ian was on top form in this! The audience wasn't giving him his dues at all, some cracking gags in there. And Ignacio was great too, maybe that's why Ian was upping his game?

I'm a big fan of Victoria. As a non-british, i discovered these great shows through the internet, and these give me huge joy, to watch at the end of a hard day. I saw victoria in taskmaster and loved that series as well. Only connect, and poker too. I'm glad these are available to watch internationally. Thank you and more power.

Such a great episode! If they ever decide to go back to having a permanent host (which I hope they don't),Victoria would be a great choice!
At 42:21 Victoria reads the scores, but she says them backwards of the LED counters. She says Ian and Ignacio have 4, but their LED counter says 6. Then she says Paul and Carol have 6 when their LED clearly says 4. Strangely, the production team in the control booth don't have her make a correction. Not hugely important, but I thought it was odd.

Good start to the new season.
Cigarette companies and vaping companies are largely owned and controlled by a lot of the same interests at this point, and they're all making donations to the politicians, so it's not surprising how the tobacco laws are playing out. The politicians need to look like they're doing something, and cigarettes are the old business, while vaping is the new growing industry, so both sides are pretty happy to let old smokey be the scapegoat. And since it's basically the same people profiting either way, they're happy to just shift their investments over into vaping, and continue donating to the politicians to ensure that business will continue as usual, regardless of the impact on human health. It pretty much fits the playbook to a tee.

Love this show, Love VCM and actual wrinkles on a beautiful woman.
In the Netherlands we've now succesfully grown our first *real* meat without killing an animal. They use a small piece from a real animal (in this case I think it was a chicken) and then they injected all the usual things meat would require to grow. The only problem is it's very expensive and time-consuming to create.
So it's real meat, edible, but without the usual animal suffering and pollution!
