@David Hames what do you expect people in that kind of abject poverty to do? Our system is impossible to face when you don't have money. You want to have a house? You need to get a job. You want to get a job? You need education. You don't have education because your parents didn't have time to help you when you were younger because they were struggling to work hard enough keep themselves from becoming homeless.
While there are some homeless people who are complete slackers who just want to try to live for free, the majority of them are people who have literally no way back into society because of circumstances they had no control over. It's not as simple as you think.

I saw the police try to move a homeless man on from sleeping in a shop doorway, when the owner came, He was like there is no issue, he leaves when we open and doesn't do any harm! He even gave the man some breakfast. It would be nice if we could all afford to house these people but the kindness of that shop owner is what humanity is about.

if you can sponsor a tiger for £5 a month, you can spare 50p for the homeless. donate to charities and the foodbank, if you can give them food or drink (preferably hot) then that's fantastic but sometimes some spare change and a smile is all it takes to make someone's day

Never give money to homeless people, 90% of them will use the money to buy drugs. I don’t blame them for it, however giving them money is actually worse for them. I will give them food or tell them a nearby shelter, never money.

It happens and I'm not saying everyone does it because that same friend told me that he saw them pit it towards food, shelter and drink. However he also said that it's better to give them food or drink or directions to a shelter because it means you know what your money has gone towards.

I've give a homeless man a coffee two weeks ago an it was freezing cold out an I asked him if he really doesn't have anywhere to sleep for the night cause the last person I saw in that spot wasn't really homeless was just trying to get money from people who went to draw out money from a atm that was there. When he told me that the coffee was enough an that he was just greatful that I didn't treat him like he's not a person, I told him not to move from that spot an when I got back he said;

Controversial opinion: when your only skills are knowing how to kill people, don't be surprised if it doesn't translate into a job in the normal world.

Either way, according to sociologists, the biggest cause for homelessness is disability (Mental and physical) disease, parental abandonment, old age and corporal downsizing and not drugs and booze.

"They're lazy" Another lie, I've seen homeless people picking up litter and cleaning graffiti. They're less lazy than our fucking bankers and politicians.

I love that Russell is using his comedy to being awareness to this issue. I've been homeless for a year now and my friend has been homeless for longer. I'm lucky I'm in a shelter but my friend hasn't been so lucky over the years more needs to be done to protect the vulnerable in society

Henry Varley hmm very good at making assumptions. I became homeless 1 year ago. I have a phone with internet access and when what little of my internet runs out there are hotspots in the city centre. My phone I've had for a number of years now since before I became homeless and it's one of the few luxuries I do have

TCt83067695 I'm getting help. I'm very lucky. I've been on a waiting list for a house for the past year. I have disabilities so I've had to wait longer than is typical but I'm positive hopefully I'll find somewhere in the new year and grateful that at least for the time being I have somewhere warm to sleep and food to eat as well as other luxuries

I was homeless a few years ago and I wasn't on drugs or alcohol not everyone that is homeless is on drugs don't get me wrong we've all thought it in the past but it isn't true fortunately for me I was able to go into an hostel after a few weeks and in there the majority of people were clean it was a truly an eye opener so as humans we shouldn't make an assumption that that man or woman is on drugs cause she's homeless you should get to know them first! I always give £10 to a homeless person they are people too. But if you want to just assume the homeless are on drugs then what about the people that have a house/flat they are on drugs too and who cares if the homeless spend the money on drugs, have you slept on the streets in the cold? People deals with things in different ways we ain't all perfect we all make mistakes and we shouldn't take it out on foreigners either it isn't all their fault. People are quick to bitch about the foreigners coming into our country but they do the jobs most British people wouldn't do and our best doctors are foreigners but when your ill or need treatment from the hospital your not bitching about them then to their face are you. I think some people need to get off their high horse and realise we are all the same, it's time to grow up.
And if only everyone thought a little bit more like you the world would be a little better Lloyd Rowlands.

The people who try to use the excuse, “ I don’t give them money because they will only use it for drugs,” should try to buy them a sandwich, or maybe clothes. It is the lamest excuse possibly thought of, when you think about simple things that you can give.

Did I say they would not use it for drugs? No, yet again, that is a lame excuse because you can give the homeless person food or used clothing. Nothing expensive, subway sandwich, McDonalds, name any fast-food place.
You could keep clothes that no longer fit you in the car to give to someone homeless or donate them to shelters if you do not meet anyone. You can hardly sell used clothing anyways, why not give it to someone instead of it sitting in your house taking up space.
While people give them only the necessities to live they are forced to go cold turkey because they would not be able to pay for drugs, and this would help them move forward; instead of people enabling their addictions that could be keeping them from moving forward.
I know people will not like this but some weeks ago I saw a man who was asking for money for food, this lady who looked well of got out of her car then went in the fish and chip shop, came out and handed them to him, it was very heart warming, until she went off in her car and he put the lot in the bin!!!
I once gave a homeless person milk and he poured it down the drain....

I’m from and live in stoke on trent and am absolutely livid when I found this out. Actually beyond disgusting. Can’t sleep on the streets and can’t even sleep in a tent now! Instead of degrading the homeless and fining them, they should just fucking help them!!

When I was an admittedly naiive, idealistic 17yo (despite my own difficult circumstances), my then-boyfriend and I offered to take a homeless kid (16yo) to get a hot meal. It was something we did from time to time, when we could afford it. There were and still are an appalling number of homeless kids in my city. His reaction shocked us both.
He started crying, like our offer had honestly just broken him. I asked him what was wrong & what we could do to help and we sat down next to him on the footpath.
He told us he was starving (literally, not figuratively), but he had to stay there and make as much money from begging as he possibly could. He was trapped living with his mum & her boyfriend, who were extremely abusive and used him to get them money for their drug habits. I described him here as homeless because he told us they made him sleep in their backyard, under a disheveled verandah. That's not a home.
We asked him if he'd tried to escape and his eyes went wide and he just started vigorously shaking his head. He told us that the one time he'd tried, they'd driven around the city for hours and hunted him down, beating him unconscious and tossing him back into the backyard. This was also back when not everyone had a phone and services that now provide homeless folks with mobile phones didn't yet exist.
Being myself from an abusive home and with my then-boyfriend having grown up in abject poverty, we wanted to help him, but didn't know how. My boyfriend offered to take him to get a hot meal and give him twice what he would usually have made from begging. While they went off and did that, I went to an Internet cafe and did some research on whom we could contact for him for help. I can't remember their name now, but we walked with him to the 24/7 offices of an organisation that specifically helped young people in danger from abusive family.
We gave him our phone numbers, but I think he was probably apprehensive about potentially bothering us, so he never contacted us after we left him at those offices. I know what it's like to feel worthless and like any time you talk to someone, you must be bothering them, cuz why would they want to talk to you? You're worthless. It was clear at the time that was how he felt, cuz he kept apologising for literally everything, which is something I used to do, as well.
I'm not including his name here, in case someone else remembers him from back then, cuz I have no idea where he is or what his life is like, now. But I think of him every so often and hope he's doing well.
The point in me telling this story is that you really, really never know what someone's story or situation is. Every homeless person we see is a complex individual with their own life story of all the human experiences we share. ANYONE can be rendered homeless at ANY TIME.
I wish there was more people like you in this world. Beautiful yet sad story. I hope you hear from him again some day
It’s horrible how many people ignore/ abuse the homeless. These people need our help. They have hopes and dreams just like you. The cruelty of some people breaks my heart.
I always give when I can. If you don't like giving money, you can always give food or coffee. I always do that or if they need socks or a scarf. I can't imagine how hard it is for anyone regardless what might led him/her to that situation. It is horrible, help shouldn't be categorised. Can you imagine that someone out there in this winter, hungry? or very cold? or sick? can you imagine how hard it is to sit on these streets, the cold travel through your bones .. how about if you have any chronic illnesses or if you actually have a weak health. It is horrible :( .. heartbreaking too. I always pass people thinking, these people didn't start their life homeless. They are someone's else child, brother or sister .. :( They sure had a life of their own at one time, whatever it is that drove them to down bottom, doesn't make them less human or worth empathy and care.

We have no idea why these people have come to be homeless yet somehow feel the need to judge. Many of them will be homeless through disasters among family or careers plummeting. They didn’t choose to be homeless. Why look down at them? It can easily happen to any one of us.

I'm currently in Edinburgh as an exchange student and I'm shocked how many homeless people I saw around. I'm glad for the internet link. I reported this one homeless man I saw a few times near me. I hope he gets the help he needs.

I remember taking a trip to London with college a couple years back and honestly the nicest people were the homeless, crowds of people in suits and ties walked past as we asked for directions. later on tat day we were stood talking to a homeless man and his dog for about 20 minutes and he was so cheerful. I gave a homeless man in Carlisle a fiver one time after seeing my girlfriend because it was either that or 2p. as my gf walked back five minutes later he was sat with a chip butty and a big smile. people need to stop the stereotype that because they are homeless they must have a dependency and spend all their money on it.

I saw a mother and child sitting outside of a store with a sign. The sign said they were about to be homeless and they were hungry. I felt for them a lot that day, as times were tight that month for me, so I decided to buy her and her son a pretzel from Jamba Juice, seeing as that’s where I was eating lunch. A little girl followed behind me with her mom with a backpack almost bigger than she was with toiletries and necessities. That lady cried when I left, saying that nobody had been that kind to her in a long time.

I own a fairly small business and was looking for someone to help manage some of my finances. I was walking down the street in my town and I saw a young woman crying with her teenage son doing his maths work. I went up to her and asked if she needed help with the work, she laughed and I asked her if she was looking for a job. To this day, she still works with me and is one of the hardest workers I know. Her son got into LSC after his mums tutoring and she managed to get herself a place near my house. I couldn’t offer her a place at my house as I still lived at my parents at the time but she would come to my study in the day for a few hours and have lunch with me

Nearly became homeless when our car burst into flames on our driveway. So I really have respect and want homeless people to be treated better and genuinely hope our attitude as a society changes soon and begins to support these *people.*

This video reminds me of a case that caused an outcry couple of years ago: a homeless man got beaten up really hard for 2 hours by some young lads in an abandoned tunnel, they weren't drunk but just did for a thrill. They came to the tunnel and beat him up 3 times within a day. Finally the homeless guy couldn't stand and stabbed one of the attackers to death. Then the police came and had him arrested. The killed lad's parents went crazy and called for the death penalty. If it weren't for the fact that the CCTV was exposed by the media, he probably would be sentenced to death cuz the dead kid's parents were some kind of senior officers in government. The homeless guy ended up sentenced 5 years in jail for manslaughter. Sad story. But at least he hot a place to live. This world has never been fair. WTF.

I don't give money to homeless people for two reasons one alot of them in my city are addicts of some kind and two i give it to the homeless charities instead as they can do more with my couple of pounds than 1 person could

The sad truth is, there are people who genuinely need help and kindness from the public, but there are also those who will take advantage of it. People who sleep rough get treated like shit because of the few who abuse people's kindness. Scammers who ask for money for a train ticket home after getting stuck overnight without their debit card. Lazy men and women who, rather than get an actual job, sit and beg for money, before climbing into their car and moving to another area of the city for more handouts.
Worse is, people who use the donations they get for drugs, alcohol and non-essentials instead of trying to get a place to sleep. People who rather than get help for an illness blame others for not helping them. These few hurt the many who are in actual dire need of assistance.

It's perfectly fine if some people don't want to help, but they need to stop pretending it's because they have a moral reason not to.
Tbh there are youtubers who do the exact same thing, titles such as: Would you help a homeless person? Vs child homeless? Social experiment (gone wrong) and its just fucking disgusting, there are people who are actually struggling and there are people who make THOUSANDS and take advantage. I gave a homeless guy money, enough to pay his deposit and guess what? He’s still o the street. He didn’t spend a penny of it on a home. Before I gave him the cash I took him food everyday and a cup of tea. There’s a group of “homeless” people in town too who aren’t homeless but still beg and play their little flutes with their dogs sitting by them. At the end of the day they all spill into the house next door to me and take their drugs, drink their booze and start fights. The amount of times the armed police have busted through that door because of calls made from us all in the street is ridiculous. These are the people who are giving the REAL and GENUINE a bad rep. Some people are truly struggling and then there’s fuckwits next door to me that are swimming in cash and play with peoples feelings. I wanted so badly to help that one guy who I thought was genuine until I saw he was just like the rest. Now I don’t know who is homeless and who isn’t when I go into town now and it’s so sad to see.

As much as the homeless break my heart, I'm a student, so I barely have enough money for myself, and I hate having to pass them by. I wish the councils would get their act together and people who had the money can do something.
Really annoying how people still seem to look at homeless people as nothing more than that just homeless like nothing more in life than that and less of a person whatever have done to end up on the streets wherever addiction or just shitty circumstance still a person with a life just as important as any others self importance in others seem to be in abundance in people sometimes although it's completely your choice in deciding to give money to a charity or a person themselves would rather a person directly still as know in the city I am only one proper piece of help once a week and then Could still not have what personally need and why people seem to think why help people who don't want to change are just plain stupid beyond judgemental and presumptuous or what

For the last few years I've done the big sleep out to raise money for a charity that raises money for homeless people to help them and I would like to encourage everyone who sees this comment to take part in their local sleep out it really helps a lot of people in your local area

My nan, who is ill and fragile and not rich, offered a homeless person near her street some sandwiches she had made because she’s always been incredibly selfless and kind. The homeless person told her that he wanted money and when she said she didn’t have any on her he started shouting and insulting her and saying that sandwiches were useless to him- that was when she realised that he wasn’t truly homeless and just want drug money. Apparently nowadays he’s living in a huge house, but she still sees him faking the act sometimes. But I applauded her for doing what she did, and despite that experience she still tries to help others because she knows that’s only the minority of homeless people. There will always be negative people in every group of people; celebrities, billionaires, elderly, teenagers, homeless people, mentally ill people, EVERYTHING. But you’ve got to make sure you don’t judge everyone based on that. There are good people also. I was shouted at by an elderly man on a bus when I was 8 years old because I was talking to my friend and didn’t see him walk on- so I didn’t offer him my seat. Even at that age I had been taught to do so, but I genuinely didn’t see. So he looked at me and said ‘I’m glad to know you’re disabled’ and I looked confused, and he said ‘well you must be disabled if you’re sitting in the front seats of the bus and aren’t willing to move for me’. I apologised and went to get up, but my mum behind me told the man that it was disgusting for him to talk to a child like that- and if he has a problem he should talk to her. Despite that experience, does that mean I don’t still stand up for the elderly? Of course not. Because that was only one man. People are too quick to judge every homeless person because of one negative story- but I’ve seen tons of homeless people who are amazing. Not everyone on the streets is even homeless either. Once I saw this man lying down on a coat on the floor with a woman and a child with him. He was shivering and crying and if you hadn’t have asked or took a second glance many would have assumed he was homeless. When I asked, I discovered that he was actually diabetic and had recently had a hip surgery. He had just fallen over and was having back spasms and was in serious pain. They had rung the hospital and were told it was a 2 hour wait (which was disgusting in itself). We asked if there was any way to help this poor man who was clearly in agony and sweating profusely, but they said there wasn’t anything we can do. Unsatisfied in leaving without helping, me and the people I was with went and purchased a packet of sweets from the supermarket nearby for the young girl who had been waiting so patiently with this man who may or may not have been her father. Even that small act of kindness- that wasn’t even for him- meant a lot. You don’t know anything about these peoples lives, so you can’t be quick to judge. Imagine yourself in their shoes. If you don’t want them to spend it on drugs (even though tons of non-homeless people use drugs and not everyone has a huge issue with that), then contribute whatever you can- food, drink, a blanket, even a ‘hello, how are you? Are you doing okay?’ proves that you care and view them as a person. Being viewed so negatively can have such negative psychological effects, it takes a lot to remain positive. I once saw a homeless man who wished everyone who went by a lovely day, and honestly it was so humbling and a wonderful gesture. But I bet he rarely heard anyone say it back, or even give him a glance. He wasn’t asking for anything or begging, he was merely spreading positivity but was still ignored- probably viewed as crazy or dangerous, purely because of where he was. Rethink what you are giving out to society. Is it positivity and generosity, or even whatever you can, whenever you can? Or is it negativity, selfishness and exclusion? I admit, I can’t give homeless people things often because I am only young and don’t have a lot myself yet. But when I do have something, and when I get more as I grow older, I will do my best to contribute to more than myself and my circle. My local supermarket has a box in which you can place unopened food to be sent to homeless shelters, and if I see a homeless person I know that even a small amount of change will do. When I have things to spare that I’m going to through away- like blankets or books or clothes or anything still in good condition- I will think twice and perhaps give these things to charity stores or the homeless or people who need them. It’s the little things that count and it’s never too late to change your habits. I wish to learn from my nans huge heart and grow as a person, because her generosity is truly inspiring to me.

how about the council buy up some derelict land and make homes out of shipping containers. There's a company in Canada that can make an entire military base out of shipping containers, offices, barracks, infirmaries, all it takes is some land, and some imagination. I used to volunteer for a narrow gauge railway and they got a shipping container for £60.

For the homeless person part, its actually 1 in every 217 people, as of 2016 that is, in 2018 that number increased to 1 in every 208 people. Very sad

I have a different kind of storym There was this guy who was homeless that I met a year ago. He had been homeless for around 2 years he had a beautiful dog called Redfoot. He said that the council only ever agreed to home him if he got rid of his dog and he refused it because he absolutely loved the dog. I know it seems stupid he didn't take the house but I understand why he didn't want to get rid of his dog. He's had the dog since it was a puppy and he absolutely adored it to the point where he'd spend most of the money he got from people to buy it food and treats. It was so sweet and heartbreaking at the same time. I bought the guy a coffee and some food as well as the dog some treats and gave him whatever money I could give. He also told me a story about why his dog was called Red foot. When he was a pup, he took a job of painting someone's room and the dog stood in a tray of red paint so he called him Redfoot and the name just stuck ever since. :')

You really could not become homeless because of uni loans in the UK. Tuition is extortionate but you only start paying it back once you earn over £25,000 a year. And even then the repayments are nowhere bad enough to make you get yourself in worse debt. If you were to lose your job or get a pay cut so that you are earning less than £25k - then your repayments freeze again

You should talk about what has happened in Devon some homeless people build a camp they weren't causing harm they were going to have a fire works fund raiser the council told them they couldn't have it and they stopped the fundraiser the council still put in an eviction notice while it's freezing winter

We should at least find a way for the homeless to earn their keep. I mean surely we can find jobs for them. And maybe some really basic housing at the least, enough for a place to sleep and store some possessions. A place where they can wash up and get a drink of water. And those with addictions, counselling and stuff. Support to help them get out of it.
My friend runs a charity in the NE that helps ex military personnel who are homeless get back in their feet. It's called Changing Step North East.

It's great how Russel has highlighted issues but I can't help feel frustrated by it. He Seems like a nice guy however I feel that all He is doing is pointing out what people know and If they didn't they do now but have no substance. What I mean is it would have been great if at the end of this clip he highlighted places and organisations to be involved with.
He's in a relatively powerful position and can influence a lot of people and almost start a "movement" if you like.
I'm not saying it's his responsibility to do so, however I do feel that if you are going to be so passionate about a subject and push people towards it, it would be a good idea to get something started yourself (if in a position to) and get people involved.
Like bjy a small hostel employ homeless people to work the reception etc, make it an attraction, get people involved and and give them a year contract to become employable and have a roof over their heads.
I'm not sure it's such an unrealistic idea, if I had the platform Russel dies I'd like to think I would.
I would like to add, I'm sure he does a lot for his own charities as well.

Taran Carter a lot of homeless don't want to do this as it narrows the types of job they can get but I understand your point as I've said it before. 3 square meals a day, bed and warm cell but most are veterans, addicts who have been rejected help or just normal people going through rough times with family and decide to run away from it but homelessness is an extreme problem in Britain and with all this land that's been untouched we could be building houses and flats but instead we just leave it here for nothing.

What we should highlight is the fact that being homeless and sleeping rough are two different things. All rough sleepers are homeless but not all homeless people are rough sleepers.
I was actually classed as homeless for 2 years. However I was living in a hostel but because it was a hostel it wasn’t classed as my home.
The actual number of rough sleepers isn’t even 10% of the homeless population. Not trying to make light of the situation at all, we need to make the situation clear so we can go out and find those that need it the most. It’s hard to find and help those few thousand that are sleeping rough in the winter when we put them in the same category as the 300,000 homeless people

I've been living in hostels for about a year and a half and I'm involved with a few like services/organisations for homeless young people and honestly the people I've met there are some of the funniest I've met. Its quite a depressing situation so we have to make the best of it! I make a point of talking to the rough sleepers in town and I always tell them about services but most of them are just on the waiting list for various places. Like I did get quite lucky because I think theres more support available for people younger than 25 certainly in this area, and it seems to be that way in quite a few places around the country.

A homeless told me shelters are mostly indecent to sleep in plus other homeless could steal your stuff while sleeping. So many prefer finding a place outdoor possibly crowdy for getting money and lowering the chances of getting stuff nicked... Crazy...
