With all the negativity to which Ms.Courtney Hadwin has been subjected in her formative years (especially from age 12 through age 16, or even until now) it's no wonder she wrote about the monsters in our heads. We humans internalize the negativity (and conversely the positivity) to which we're exposed, ESPECIALLY in our teenage years as we're just starting to get used to the floods/tides/tsunamis of hormones washing through our bodies and embodied minds. Embodied cognition is a HUGE area of study, touching on all human behaviour.
Additionally, we humans are, at heart, story-making systems. Our memories, in fact, are the stories we tell ourselves. When bullied, whether at home, school, playground, or work, the stories we tell ourselves get darker and darker, until we sometimes start splitting the stories we tell ourselves into dark stories and bright stories seeking hope. When that happens, things can get complicated quickly. Especially if this is happening while still a teenager or young adult still solidifying our sense of self, still developing biologically as our brain grows and changes quite extensively and rapidly through our mid-20's. Growth and change continue after then, but at a greatly reduced pace, with slower to appear overall effects on our embodied cognition. The challenges we can face to our moods and mental 'balance' in such circumstances can be significant. We can benefit greatly from having sympathetic empathic listeners and advisors under such circumstances. These are 'normal' mental states and challenges which most of us experience at multiple points in our lives, in fact for most of us at least once at some point in our teens. There be MONSTERS in our heads, even if we're 'normal' or going through difficult situations.
Beyond normal, we can develop any of a variety of biological abnormalities and/or psychological abnormalities and/or psycho-social abnormalities, whether connected to genetic predispositions or not. We then cross over into the territory normally loosely attributed to 'mental illness'. There's a whole gamut of potential kinds of abnormalities, with lesser or more significant ties to biological changes, whether as causes or as effects. Historically there has been significant dissension between different professions and factions within various mental health professions in defining 'normal' and 'abnormal' or even if those terms should be abandoned. I use them here because I believe them to be the most relatable by, pardon me, 'the average person in the street' or most folks trawling RUclips. 😉
Personally, I believe Ms. Courtney's lyrics in this song apply quite well to both those 'normal' and 'abnormal' states. They apply, IMHO, to us all. From the traditional description of having a tiny angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, to more accurate and educated descriptions, I believe they're all covered by these lyrics.
Great song! Great track (about which a few other professionals have expressed very minor quibbles)! Good music video!
As to the quality of this particular music video, I believe it to be an excellent compromise between getting the message across while under significant financial constraints, especially by a young 19 year old indie singer-songwriter. A young artist trying to leverage her talents, IQ/EQ (no mistake about it, this young lady is SMART, however unconventional she may appear to be), skills, and unique POV to make songwriting and expert performance her profession within the crumbling music industry. An industry that is still shaking and falling apart from the digital revolution that has hit hardest in the past two decades. If you have objections, I suggest you give this youngster a break! And teach her and us how to do better if you ACTUALLY have true expertise in creating stellar music videos on a tiny budget.

I totally agree with you about the symbolism of the video, it is about personal demons/depression/anxiety...
I love the way she delivers the message, with so much energy and joy. I really hope that the song goes up the charts, it is actually quite a therapeutic video.

Thank you for expressing what Courtney is messaging through her music. Mental illness needs to be addressed around the world. So many people are in anguish right now. This is a serious video that she can communicate through a rock style. I am so proud of this insightful young woman ❤

Hi. Since you've already reacted to the song itself, won't spend a lot of time talking about it. Suffice it to say that this is the best rock song I've heard in forever and with Courtney's vocal power, control and range, she can take a song to places other artists can only dream of. It won't be long before everyone recognizes that we are watching the first steps of an artist destined to one day be considered one of the greatest in music. Regarding the video, it is brilliant. It shows Courtney's off the charts creativity at its finest. I think you hit on part of it in your analysis regarding mental health, but I think there's so much more to it than that. Based on what Courtney has said when discussing it on her livestreams, the Monsters don't apply only to those who are mentally ill, but rather to all of us. Each of us have our own particular insecurities and self doubts (our own personal demons) that we battle with on a daily basis. Those monsters could be different for every single person, but everyone has their own monsters that they are facing. In that way, I think the song connects so well with everyone, because the message is universal. There is no one alive that is Monster free. They are there for us all. Another amazing song and video for the incredible Courtney Hadwin.

Thanks for the reaction! Courtney has said the monsters are in our heads, and this a great song to express that. Also, I reminding everyone of the Courtney Hadwin GoFundMe. She is needing less than 1/3 of her goal to have enough money to go to America and finish her album!

You are exactly on point. I wish Courtney had put something in there about her getting help. I think her figure in a suit represented her getting help and getting victory. Again, this is a 19 year old taking on this very serious topic and bringing it to the world. Along with her immense talent is also a great amount of bravery.

I think it was a choice. To let the listener take their own monsters and apply it to this. She knows how she feels. She wants others to make the song about their own monsters and apply their own meanings.

Wonderful, thoughtful reaction. I believe that Courtney’s message lives on several different levels; for some, the monsters are debilitating, or dangerous, and can only be vanquished with professional help. For others, they are less dangerous, but can still lead to self-doubt and self-limiting behaviors. I believe she wrote the following lines for ALL of us:
“…We gotta hear each other when we’re crying for help, gotta save each other if we’re gonna save ourselves…”
Less isolation and more caring is the best medicine. Anyway, that’s just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions…
