Base on those educated assumptions, he almost captured her but made a simple miscalculation which is comparing a newbie like Eren to a wel train titan like Annie. Now, let’s look at Armin, he figured out all the identity of titans because he had enough information, all he needed to do is get them together like a puzzle and he figured out a way to defeat the colossal by confirming Hange’s hypothesis. So yeah, Erwin is definitely smarter than Armin but idk about Hange.
Armin now officially has the best theme in the series! He has shown real character development, especially in season three. After these last episodes I think he is starting to become one of my top favourite characters...

I'm a manga reader and I say anime is better. I experienced all of season 1 without manga knowledge and when I went back to read it it didn't feel as great even though the story was the same. WIT Studio has done this story justice. And a big part of that is Sawano's godly compositions.

Erwin and Armin, arguable the two strongest characters when it came to wit and strategy. Both of them were brave to be willing to throw their lives away for humanity; however to me, Armin's sacrifice was more impactful than Erwin's and it comes down to motivations and character traits. Erwin, whether you want to believe it or not, was insanely selfish to his very death. Sure he gave up his dream for humanity, but he didn't do it because he wanted to, he did it because it was the only thing he could do. If Erwin could've escaped with Levi over the wall and not have to worry about the Beast Titan following them, I wouldn't put it past him to do it. Armin on the other hand is doing it out of necessity as well, but he doesn't have to lie and prep himself up for it like Erwin did, he does it without hesitation. To me, that's what makes him the better choice. Armin is kind at heart, where as Erwin had a bitter selfishness that stuck with him to the very end.

Sure, he got to see the ocean. But his dreams of a peaceful world now aren't dreams. They're a battle he must win for everyone.

I agree on the strategic part,but Isayama saved him for a reason. Everything that he does to the series happens for a reason. Erwin would have been a much better choice, but he let Erwin die and Armin live for a reason. He has been rather useless since they saw the ocean though. Most of the characters have been disappointing since the timeskip, so I feel like they’re being saved for something important in the final battle...I’m kind of scared to see what in God’s name it is. (Levi has been dying, Mikasa has been crying, Erens been a dick, Reiners been depressed, Gabi + Falco are gaining plot armor, Historia is AFK, Armin is a bystander, Zeke is crazy, The rest of the 104th is tired. The only interesting character right now is Annie.) Sorry for the long ass comment, haha.

Its not merely about choosing Armin over Erwin, its more about releasing Erwin from hell.
The guy basically on mental breakdown with guilt of sacrificing all of his comrades for his ambition. Levi knows that and give mercy to Erwin.
