    Thanks Matti, you nailed it. With the multitude of print options that we have today, our photos provide us a tangible archive of our work which can be observed as we move around our homes or offices. It’s also an art in itself. Getting the correct monitor settings for editing a photo, ICC profiles, etc. and print size. For every good photo I have there are three records kept: the print edited file on my storage devices, a 4x6 or 5x7 print in a photo book (yes, they still make them) and a wall print of appropriate size, though never smaller than 8x10 or A4. Then there’s the matting and the frame style choices to complete the final display. I was asked recently by a close friend why they never see my photos.. well one because I stopped throwing away my work on social media (nobody looks anymore, too much to absorb), and two, they haven’t stopped by my house in a while..

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You are guaranteed to get attention when you pull out a print, every time. That's so personal and more satisfying than any social media, that no one actually looks, like you said.

    Thanks Matti. I agree that photos on paper are fantastic. For me the most satisfaction I get is making small square photo books (about 17 cm or 7 inch square). Maybe a trip to NYC or street shots in my home city. Nothing fancy but they're a nice way to show my photos and I get a great deal of satisfaction out of the process..

    I like the idea of printing expansive views on small paper and details on large formats. Been printing rainy lanscapes on B&W instax mini, stapled 10 of them together and gave them to friends.

    Great video, and thanks for addressing this topic. More photographers should print their work; I should do more myself. For me, viewing a print is a very different experience compared to viewing on a computer screen or other e-device. Some images that I thought were just OK look great when printed. I print mostly 8X10 but occasionally as large as 13X19, which is the largest my printer (Canon Pro 100) will handle. I use Luster paper for color prints, which I really like. Although my monitor has been calibrated and I use the proper printer profiles, I usually find that I still need to adjust image brightness by about 20 pts to get a print look that I am happy with. There is no fixed formula that just works for me; I have to experiment. Sometimes it takes several trials to get the look that I want.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto 24 дня назад +1

      Thanks! There is no rule for that. It depends on the size of the print, the subject matter of the photo and how the photographer wants to display his/her works. I generally like a fairly wide white border. I suggest you experiment and see what you like.

    This, I think, is the only time I disagree with you. I have had many boxes of prints in the 80's. I never looked at them. They took up many cubic feet of space in the basement. Eventually I just threw them all out. I think of the cost of all of that. But it was too tedious to pull up a picture to show someone. Today I use an electronic photo frame. I can easily change the slide show, or, bring up particular images to show someone. And, of course, the color and detail seem so much more alive than on a print. Also, I don't have to worry about smudges or finger prints ruining a print. My friends don't have to wear white gloves to view the images.

    About borders, I have seen thousands of prints in my life, I do not think that white borders for color photos is the best choice, dark grey or black borders is better and seems to enhance the colors for your eyes, you can add a thin light grey border next to the color image with dark grey or black broad borer outside the thin border. White borders for black & white photos is fine, make a thin black border next to the image with a broad white border at the outside of the thin black border. If anyone knows a very good free software to MacOS that can make borders easy, please let me know.

    Thank you, Matti. I have just 1 question, is DPI super relevant? I have my DPI set to 300dpi, is there any benefit by using 500dpi or 600dpi? Thank you

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto 10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks. There is no simple answer, but generally I’d say that the it doesn’t matter that much as long as you are using a relatively modern digital camera (8 or more Mp) and are not printing super big, like beyond A2 or A1.

    Buy a good printer to complete your photography. Only then do you have everything in your hand.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto 10 месяцев назад +1

      That's a good option. However, a good printer is not cheap and it takes up space and you'd have to print on a regular basis to keep the printer in working order. You'd be limited to your printer's capabilities too, like the max paper size and you'd have to stock up multiple paper varieties in multiple sizes. I own a good printer, the Epson P800, but I travel a lot and generally do not print regularly enough and because of that I frequently get clogged nozzles and other related problems. So, I gave the printer to a friend who keeps it in shape. If you print a lot and often, then it makes sense to own a printer.
