Wow! I have the same machine and never realised it was capable of doing all this. The only problem is the timing went off and I'm having trouble finding instructions online. I think I'll get it though.
Hi. Thankyou for posting. I bought one of these and didn't know how to thread it, the previous owner had a problem with thread tension. I think they threaded it wrong but I will see. I have not used a machine since 1987 when I was 10 in home-ec so I may be a bit rusty. I had to install a new belt and there are some loose bolts in the motor I noticed. This machine seems to be a bit FAST! I believe that this may be the model that my Grandma used to sew parachutes for the military 30 years ago. She had cataracts and sewed her fingers a few times. If you can imagine, she was so blind she fell down on her way to work (couldn't drive). I don't jump out of planes!
Is this a descendant of the old 96k series? Based on the number 196 and that the stitch lenght adjustment is identical? I have an old Husqvarna 227 (licenced singer 96k by swedish husqvarna) and it also has the same arrangement.
Hey I have one of these can you advice me on needles please?? I’m sewing heavy canvas which is coated and the needles I have are 120/19 grizzly-beckert. The machine isn’t liking this fabric that much. Do you think I need a sharper or thicker needle?? Thanks so much
I am guessing that what is really going on here is that this machine will not move your heavy material through reliabley and so you have to pull it through. When you do that, you bend the needle which then crashes into the machine. Does that sound right. Triple Feed sewing machine is what I would recommend.
Nice videos!! Wondering if you could help me out? I just bought an old Singer 331k105 off an old timer. Every thing seems to work except the threading and tensioner. There maybe missing parts but I can’t find any old manuals online. Would you have a minute to spare? Thanks!
I understand its been a few years since this video but I just picked up a 196k5 myself and am finding myself in need of a couple parts. Have you had any luck finding parts for this machine anywhere. Thanks in advance!
hello their I watch all your videos u do a great job. I just picked up a singer 331K5 do u have any experience with this machine? when I got it the stitch Winx was way out of adjustment I was able to repair it and sews like a dream just can't seam to find any info on it was mainly curious about the walking foot style of machine this is more of a spring-loaded skip foot design thanks for the videos
I think that is what I call a top and bottom feed meaning it has alternating presser feet (top) and drop feed (bottom) but not needle feed. Glad to hear you got it going. I have never had one. Thanks for your support.
Just bough the same machine for 50 euros but it's all scrstched up,oily, dirty and lacking cable tension. Also i tried to turn it on..nothing is happening. Not sure if it's fixable

I know it has been a few years ago since you put that video on YuTube. I found myself a 196K5 machine and had it checked by a sewing machine busienss where I was told to not use Petroleum jelly as a lubricuant on this machine but oil. What did you use to lubricate that machine?
@@AlexanderDyer Months later I realized I misunderstood where Petroleum Jelly was used and where oil was used. I found the oil and took out the petroleum jelly I had used on the places with wicks and cleaned or made a new wick and used oil. Do you know a way to elongate the space between each point more than 5 mm. I am working with a thick material and I would like to extend the space to 6 or 7 mm. Is this possible? I have this exact same machine 196K5,
I think that machine was for denim coats and overalls and stuff like that. Harness Material and unsplit leather need a machine like this. ruclips.net/video/NklLZhf8QMg/видео.html
Nice demonstration of this machine, which I’ve never seen before.

Adjusting the timing is the same on all drop feed industrial machines. Look for a how to on RUclips.

Hope the price quoted on the amazon page is wrong at 77,11$.
I found others at less, so thank you for your answer. Like all your video on YuTube
That is weird. Should be about 8 dollars.

Singer 16x231
merçi
Can it still do light material tho ?
Yeah but you might have to make some adjustments and a new feed dog with finer teeth would help too.
