Didn't realize that people were making copper metal and sulphuric acid more often then not! Not a cost effective way of producing either metal or acid nor a cost effective way of demonstrating the reaction imo

Chemistry student here. This process is called electrolysis of water. You use electricity to brake down the water back into oxygen and hydrogen using the pencils as electrodes. I strongly recommend you do not do this as hydrogen (which this gives off) is highly flamable and it is poisonous. So only do this in a well ventilated area or, even better, in a fumehood
Hydrogen...try a separated mesh and a central rod, seal the water off and have a tube as the only escape for the gas. This is how you make a simple hydrogen generator

In this case the water is not boiling, it's being separated from H2O into H2 and O2. Hydrogen gas bubbles are forming on the "+" pencil and Oxygen gas on the "-" pencil in a process called electrolysis. The water and gas stay about the same temperature.
