    I LOVE that Tama supplies USA Ambassadors on their Star line. That being said, I haven't changed out the stock heads on my Spotted Gum and it's incredible. My favorite snare sounds are when you can tension them in higher tunings and still get that lower fundamental tone. The Gum & Stainless Steel SLP's deliver that.

    Great demonstration as usual. Tama really excels with their snare drums. The spotted gum medium tuning sounded the best to my ear. The metal snare drums are nice but, like other metal snares, they often seem one-dimensional in that they seem to be missing an important element to them, in particular that low end warmth to counterbalance the high end crack of a snare drum.

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 2 года назад

      You haven't tried enough metal shelled snare drums. I have the SLP 13x6.5 Sonic Steel and with a Remo X14 batter and Ambassador Hazy reso the drum has low end and depth for days. It still amazes me every time I play that drum how much low end there is. I constantly check the reso heads thinking the heads are not tight enough. Start with a steel shell with diecast hoops and you should have all the low end you need. The Tams SLP Black Steel 14x8 is a great drum to give you a taste of what a well made Steel shell can bring to the table. I resisted trying a steel snare for years as my thoughts were similar to yours.

    The drum I thought I'd like the least was the hammered brass and it was my favorite. I thought the steel was going to be my favorite but it came in second to the spotted gum which was incredible in medium and high tuning. My opinion would probably be different if given the chance to play each one as opposed to listening. All brilliant sounding drums. Shane is spot on about a metal drum in live situations.

    I’ve been mulling over picking up the Spotted Gum SLP for a few days now. As usual DCP has PERFECT timing with their videos. And of course the Star Reserve Vol 3 has been calling my name for a while now and I’ve resisted because I tell myself my lower priced snares sound just as good as a Star albeit without the prestige. The SLP line elicits that point perfectly.

I've had problems not cutting through in my recordings and I definitely like to EQ as little as possible -letting the mics do all the work... Going back and forth between that one and a BB...

      @@boobo3763 No. Cast shells are usually super expensive. Tama doesn't have any cast shells in their lineup except for the Starphonic Bell Brass. Look at the Gretch USA cast drums. There's a Steel 14x6.5 that was $650 2 years ago but it shot up in price recently along with everything else. Look for the 2018 "Heavy Metal snares" video from this channel. Really nice stuff from Tama.........I didn't get to try anything at NAMM in January, so nice to hear them in detail here.
    -Of course the low tuning of the Gum is juicy as F*** !!. Would be a go to for studio work. Pretty dry in med & high tuning.
    -I'll be honest, I haven't been into Tama's steel snares for many years. Too many other great options out there.......But THIS one is on point!!. I don't know if it's the steel they used or the 3mm batter hoop??, but the impact is to die for!. Having 30 strand snares doesn't hurt either ;:-) . Great at all tunings. I suspect most rockers would crank it up and smack the hell out of rim shots all night long !!
    -The Brass was interesting......The low tuning is right there with the Gum, but the Gum is a little more focused/drier. I'd put a few mood gels or a BF ring on it in the studio and it would be gold!! Love the snare sensitivity. Med and high were about what I would expect.
    All really nice drums.......The Gum and Steel are my faves, but for completely different reasons.

    • @norris_the_great
      @norris_the_great 4 года назад +2

      Think of Drum Companies like Car companies... Each company has its' budget product, the higher in product you go, the more features you get. For the sake of the snares in mention, they are from 2 different companies and totally different products. This means that a Supraphonic is an Aluminum shell where as in this video, you heard Steel and Brass... As you see, different products. However, these materials are what give our drums the sonic characteristics. In your case, Yes, an Aluminum drum will be drier than a Steel and Brass... To your thought, the Tama Star Reserve is a $1k plus snare drum which makes it a "Cream of the Crop" product... whereas a Supraphonic is a $600+/- snare drum and not their most Elite product...
      Makes sense?

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 4 года назад +1

      Connor Clarke Starphonic Metal snares can do anything a Ludwig can do and in certain tunings better. I know plenty of guys from the forums that ditched their Ludwigs in favor of a Starphonic or chose a Starphonic over a Ludwig when purchasing either was not an issue. The brass and aluminum models come to mind. I own the Brass and it’s an amazing snare. And yes I would say the Starphonic Metal snares are on the dry side in a good way as in lack of excessive overtones. And with the Tama snares you get the best throwoff and butt plate in the industry.

    • @paulkennedy4920
      @paulkennedy4920 4 года назад

      @@Assimilator702 I am a Ludwig man through and through, so for me to buy something other than Ludwig, it has to be special. When I took the spotted gum out of the box the first thing I noticed was the strainer/butt plate and immediately wondered why Ludwig couldn't do the same. It is a great combo.

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 4 года назад

      Paul Kennedy Yeah I’m 100% a Tama guy. I own a Yamaha Recording Custom Aluminum and the throwoff is OK. Nothing to complain about but not nearly as refined as the Tama Linear Drive system. I also own a Gretch cast bronze and the throwoff and butt plate on that snare is HORRIBLE. Luckily the Tama Limear Throwoff fits into the butt plate side which makes the awkward Lightning Strainer the new butt plate. Until I can either make or have someone else make an adapter plate the setup works well. Honestly when I was considering a Black Beauty those awful throwoffs turned me off and I picked up a Tama instead.

    • @paulkennedy4920
      @paulkennedy4920 4 года назад +2

      @@Assimilator702The newish P88AC throwoff that comes standard on Ludwig snares is so much better than the old P85. If you're ever considering a Ludwig, you can be confident the strainer is quality. It's just odd to me that Tama can put that strainer on a cheaper drum but for years Ludwig got away with that crap strainer on expensive drums.

  • @simongrossjohann
    @simongrossjohann 10 месяцев назад

    I recently got the spotted gum and really like it, its very easy to tune and has a huge warm body, the sound is hard to describe, but its a little like the opposite of "compressed": medium crack, huge body, a lot of character. I tried different hoops, lots of heads and wires and I liked the stock triple flanged hoop most, went with ambassador coated, and finally replaced the stock wires which were hardly audible on that snare (you can hear it well in this video too). I wanted more buzz and went for 24strand puresounds and to my ears its really perfect now. die cast worked well too, but I liked the anti-compressed sound very much, its very characteristic and something new and somewhat unique in my small collection, and thats most emphasized with the triple flanged hoop.

      Pablo Escalante If you’re thinking of spending anywhere near $500 on a metal shelled drum get a cast bronze or steel snare. All other Metal snares will seem redundant and unnecessary. Gretch cast Steel is $650 while the cast bronze is $1000. Gretch cast Bronze is an amazing drum and VERY CLOSE to the new production Tama cast bronze or “Bell Brass”. The older Tama snares are bit more special being sand cast but also major $$$$.

    The brass drum takes it, it has the best sound with just your room mics and that's very obvious. Great brass snare.

    I would have to say the Spotted Gum has the greatest range from low to high. The Stainless Steel is John Bonham world period ! The beautiful Brass has an awesome total sound but narrow range and too much ring for me? The Gum wins cuz it sounds Tribal ,like a native beating on a wet log in the jungle when tuned low.....Wet and woody is wear I live, and always listen for in a snare drum ! I will buy the Gum and that kick ass Steel if possible..... Covers any needs !

    Pleeeease put emperors or uv2s on that kit!!!
    I personally have a starclassic maple Kit and it sounds awful with the stock heads compared to my emperors!

    I am wondering if the brass is coated to prevent oxidation. I am imagining this beautiful brass snare drum turning green over time.

    The brass snare is easily the best. And you can't beat that color. I forgot to mention those Tama drums, I love that color.
