Entertaining video Keith, I'm not a keen fan of sphagnum moss for obvious reasons especially as my greenhouse is more or less damp all of the time. Once the roots get hold of the bark you may be able to remove the moss and allow the plant to continue growing and it may well produce additional aerial roots to help keep it sustained.Happy growing and thanks for sharing.

I think you're right, Mick, although as I grow in the home very high humidities aren't an option so a wee bit of moss might be needed to help a microclimate develop around the mount. I don't expect to have to bury it in moss now it's getting roots attached properly.

Good evening Keith and thanks for the video. I've only been successful with moss when I use it with Draculas....and I change that every 6 months. I do think the trouble is when to water and when not to. My mounted ones used to have moss around them but once the roots are attached to the mount I remove the stuff,.....take care and thanks for the interesting video,
    Ed.

As I replied to Fernanda, I don't use a lot of it even as an addition to bark for moisture retention. Using it on its own is decidedly unusual for me so I'm learning what it can and cannot do. In my very limited experience it would seem that less is best, even on a mount. Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it.

Glad you liked it, Susan. It's always a bit of a nail-biter when you aren't sure what you're going to find!

That is why I avoid sphagnum moss. In my environment it gets slimy green within a few months and I hate the sight of it even if it is still ok underneath...

I don't use it often even as an addition to bark to help keep the moisture level up. This was an exception because the plant arrived bare-rooted and clearly couldn't be potted. I had no mounts at that time so couldn't immediately go down that route so I improvised and it grew well. When it got too big to stay in that arrangement I decided to try mounting it. The biggest change is that it subsequently sat upright, instead of horizontally, and that encouraged the algae and might have reduced the life of the moss. Anyway, there's nothing like as much moss there now so we'll see whether that was a good choice in a month or two.
