The scene when the brother just gave up and went to bed after the event was so hard to watch... just pure horror.
Yeah it's weird, a lot of the movie isn't horror in the movie sense but the human sense, pure existential terror really. Cannot even fathom the psychological pain of living with this as a brother.

Exactly my feeling about this movie. I rented it when it was fairly new and as a horror movie I got my moneys worth to say the least. Later bought a copy with the intention to rewatch it. It's still in it's wrap, because I still remember the dread from the first time all too well....

This can never be said enough. Toni literally slayed. She was perfect. I consider myself somebody who knows good film and she gave one of the best performances I've ever seen in my life.

Also, her face when she's sitting in her car talking to Joan and Toni says her daughter was killed. She surprises herself with what she says a few times as if possessed. Crazy stuff!

The scene were she was crying over her daughter was heartbreaking. I felt her pain and cried with her. Her pain was guttural and felt genuine. It was one of those performances were if it wasn’t good it would be way over the top but she nailed it. Her mental state and pain was felt throughout the film.

I agree. I watched it last night for the first time. When that scene happened I cried like a baby with her. I like to think I cried like that because I had a rough day & I personally needed a good cry but honestly it was her amazing acting. Soooo well done!

To everyone in the comments thinking this was an Oscar bait movie....NO. it's far from it, this is a strong genre movie and the Oscars don't look well upon these kind of films. Toni Collette was amazing in this movie, the audience saw an amazing performance. But we all knew deep down it wouldn't get nominated, and because we knew, that eliminates it from being oscar bait. That's why I haven't watched the Oscars in years because they only consider what's popular and go from there. I hope in the future that they'll stop this award ceremony, unless they IMPROVE it. The Grammys actually impressed me this year as opposed to last year. Lets hope the Oscars will do that soon
@@zombiekiller9077 I conclude that you're just a bitter individual. There was absolutely character development. Agreeably, there wasn't enough, but there's no way in HELL you can dismiss Toni Colette in this movie.
This may come as a shock to you, but the father wasn't supposed to do anything. Why, because most families don't confront each other or intervene when it's too late. The result is that their problems often worsen or reach an inevitable point of no return.
Common sense, which I assume you were looking for, is hardly a thing in most horror movies. That's kinda the point. Horror movies are often a blueprint for what not to do or what to avoid. You just lost that or you're handling your frustration completely wrong.

Toni Collette definitely deserves an Oscar. Her wailing when she is grieving for her daughter was intense and raw. Very rare a movie upsets me after I see a movie. Awesome movie!

I hate to hear that, but I understand. So many people raved about how creepy and great The Witch (also an A24 film) was, yet I was mostly bored by it. I'm going to watch The Witch again in a few months, now that the hype has long since died down, and see it with a fresh perspective.
When Hereditary comes to video, you should do the same. One day...no rush.
I actually went into the movie knowing that [MAJOR SPOILER] happens to Charlie, but not knowing the details along with some other basic elements of the plot, and I actually feel like that made me enjoy it more. I heard that a lot of people felt mislead by the trailer, but because I had been semi-spoiled, I actually didn't have that sense of betrayal and was able to fully enjoy the misdirection.

The fact the the trailer mislead me, made (SPOILER!!!!!!!!) Charlie's death and the reveal of the aftermath a thousand times more horrific for me. I thought that she was the character that we were following all the way through the movie. Even when that scene happened, I still questioned whether or not she was actually dead. Then they showed that scene that I just can't get out of my head, and it was as if someone had kicked me in my stomach. This movie was the most uncomfortable and disturbing experience I've had watching a movie, since I was a kid.
The misdirection of the trailer actually increased the impact of this movie, and that is incredibly rare. Especially in a day and age in which most trailers practically show the entire movie, or give away key plot points.
The fact that Toni Collette was not even nominated for this performance is one of the biggest Oscar tragedies in history. I was absolutely astounded by what she did on screen. Not many actors could pull off what she did with such conviction.
Yeah, horror films are never nominated.
It’s because she’s white. It’s all diversity nominees now.
Let's just acknowledge that the Oscars largely mean nothing, but we will always hold the actual award as an achievement because the world is messed up and we aren't in control of our desires and if we ever truly realise the gravity of that, we will lose our minds and never recover.
She really went to a place I never want to go. What an actress.

no you i watched the first half of the movie off of an edible and that car scene gave me anxiety hahaha. There’s also a scene where Peter has a panic attack after hitting a bowl. Not the right movie to watch high 😂
I watched it high last night too, it was honestly a fucking out of body experience, I was traumatized.
I just did the same thing alone and now it’s 1 am and I can’t stop checking the corner of my room.

his arm in the classroom wasn’t bent in a random position, it was twisted to mimic the shape of the staff paimon is holding at the end of the film. The top of the wooden staff is a hand with two fingers pointing sideways.
This was arguably the most disturbing movie I have ever seen. Yes, I have seen Irreversible, Deliverance, Exorcist, etc. but it was something about this movie that was just awfully disturbing. Unbelievable movie experience
Irreversible is the only film that really ever disturbed me. That rape scene and the fire extinguisher scene were disturbing.
Disturbing is the wrong word. A Serbian Film was very disturbing, and it was bad, overall. This film was unsettling, engaging, and intriguing. You want more because it's interesting, not because it's just jacked up stuff and you want to see how far it can go.

Sickest scene sequence i have ever watched...The psycholigical part of it was Just as unsettling...Laying in bed with headless sister in backseat of car...Mother wakes up to go to the car and that is what she saw...And The cut away camera to the head on side of road...My GOD

joe chrow watched it last night have never really gotten scared by horror films at all but this was the first movie i genuinely covered my eyes from fear when they showed charlie’s head
I didnt enjoy it. It was too sadistic to watch all these terrible things happen. I love horror but not sick stuff.

The car scene and the following 5-10 minutes where probably the most intense moments any movie has provided me. I'm usually one against comedic relief but I was waiting for some. I felt like I needed to walk out the theatre to catch my breath.
genithlol yeah it was really intense, especially because it is something that could happen irl, the scene where he just stared into nothing with his hands wrapped around the steeringwheel for a minute or two in pure shock were one of the most terrifying scenes I have seen in a long time.
We Love Stories exactly. ive seen real gore video like beheadings n shit but they didn't fuck me up as much as that car scene
That scene shook me hard. When Annie began crying and screaming in the next couple scenes I almost decided that was enough for me and was close to walking out for a minute or two.
I actually walked out of the theatre after the car scene.

I loved the transitions in this movie like how the same shot would just suddenly change lighting from night to day or someone is sitting on a bed and then they’re in the same position in a different place. Definitely something I haven’t seen before

It’s the way the film puts you in the perspective of the sleep deprived characters. They don’t experience sleep.
From the reviews, I think Collette could definitely win the Oscar but only if Meryl Streep doesn't come out with a movie about a woman struggling to come to terms with a yeast infection a couple of months before the ceremony.

One of the scariest things about hereditary was that when something shocking happened, whatever it was, you felt like it was happening to you. It felt incredibly real.

The scariest part was at the very beginning when Annie turns the light off in the room and sees the faintest shadow of her mom in the room. It made me so sick to my stomach and still does.
erin branson I know I’m a year late but I concur. That scare gets overshadowed by the many other horrifying sequences afterwards, but that scared the hell out of me. Full chills. I hope horror directors have been taking notes and opt for scares like that in the future over the predictable and terribly loud jump scares.

I slept like a log after watching!
Rarely is a film actually scary to me. Jacob's Ladder scared me and now this scared me. Can't really think of much else
I couldn't sleep right for weeks after this, the clicking haunted my dreams
I am 66 years old and I am very jaded when it comes to horror films. This movie is by far the most terrifying movie I have ever seen in my life - nothing else comes close, and I saw The Exorcist and The Omen in the theater as a young woman. They pale in comparison to this.
I'm 68, and in agreement with everything you wrote. This one broke me. Only one other movie has come close: Carl Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc"
The only other movie to hit me harder than Hereditary was Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique (a film based on the 1989 mass shooting in Montreal, Quebec). But it was such a raw and authentic telling of a real tragedy that made it so horrifying.
Ari Aster, on the other hand, just plucked this one from his noggin' and put it to film ;)
I'm 43 and this movie terrified me to the point I wouldn't sleep w my lights out for weeks!
there's something so endearing, to me, about the fact that two people aged 66 and 68 are watching Stuckmann reviews and sharing their opinions on the spooky movies they adore. I wonder why I never really pictured senior citizens enjoying Hereditary... guess I should check my presumptions haha

Toni Collette did a great job, but honestly I was surprised with Alex Wolff's performance. He does such a great job conveying emotions subtly and then building up as his life starts to unravel during the course of the film.

This film has been torn apart by the public opinion vs mainstream critic that will give anything a 4/5, 9/10/, 90% whatever. Which is why those here responding to your claim of "Best movie I've ever seen" are pretty dumbfounded. This was easily the worst film I've seen in a while. You want good horror, watch It (not the original) that film is a ride with actual clear direction. I don't think I've ever seen so many drawn out scenes in a film. I swear they could have scrapped at least 30 minutes of aimless standing and staring, a snail would be pissed watching this! I asked myself and those I was watching with many times "what's the point/the fuck is going on!". It gets to a point where it's just comical especially with the cliche paranormal shit. I didn't expect it but we got a shittier Paranormal Activity and that film was already shitty to begin with. If we wanna talk true horror as well, this film is not scary... at all. You have these ambience filled scenes where something should happen or a build up. Instead you get those snail scenes that if they were going for any level of effective build up it's destroyed. Man Halloween 2018 was average at best but even that had its moments.
I easily agree with the others here in that you need to expand your horizons dude. I thought Annihilation was shit when I saw it a month or two ago but this film reached new levels of bad.
Blue241 did not read any of that shit after you put your take on real horror. REAL horror is thematic and it’s all about provoking dread and misery, imagine being part of that family in the film. It’s like a nightmare. You only know Hollywood horror, which is just scary stuff that looks scary. Gtfo

It's interesting that people are so divided over this movie. I personally found it disturbing and well made, but a lot of people don't seem to notice the subtleties interlaid in the movie's plot and production that made it incredibly unnerving for people who noticed it.
Elijah Shane Yea that's what you get when Mcdonalds have their staff party at the cinema. Perhaps stick to watching Annabelle and Paranormal Activity 19

I went in blind and in the first act I thought it was just an overhyped film. But after the girl died and the film started to get interesting it was like watching a nightmare. So much suspense with the slow wide shots I thought my heart was going to explode. I don't watch horror that often but I loved this one.
My friends: 'It wasn't even horror, not even psychological horror, didn't even have a plot it was horrible'.
And I already imagine them getting bored in the first ten minutes and then texting on their phones and constantly saying to each other 'omg this is so shit, so boring' because they didn't bother to pay attention after they judged it to be boring.

i watched it at home with my mom and she usually doesnt like the movies that we watch together cause she finds them too artsy or pretentious, and i was nervous about that but even she liked this and held her breath till the end.

Toni collette's cry is the must disturbing thing that I heard in my life.
It really makes me wonder what in the world she did to recover from that role. Because you don't just walk away from something like that. Same goes for Alex Wolff.

Toni Collette is like Gary Oldman, to me. Even if she's in a shrug-worthy movie, you can generally watch her and you can just tell she's giving her all. Great actress.

OMG that scene. And it was like I didn't realize him til the end cause I thought it was creepy that he was smiling in the beginning. And I saw him smiling in the end and was like "OMG that's that smiling man"

dedley01 You can have your own opinion. Both were a breath of fresh air from the typical gore flicks that have been dropping every week. Both these movies use gore effectively IMO. Some of the only movies to really make me flinch or feel uneasy when it used any gore. And I have seen all of them-Serbian Film, Hostels, Human Centipedes, Japanese flicks, ETC ETC.
The scene where she wakes everybody up to show them she can talk to her daughter actually made me tear up with fear. Utterly terrifying

She's always amazing. In some weird way I feel The Sixth Sense and Hereditary are connected. I'm pretty sure Ari Aster cast her partly because of it.

The head sawing and when she is crawling round the walls and banging her head on the attic door was scary as hell.

Idk why but I kinda get The Shinning vibes from this film; especially the long wide shots just like in the Overlook Hotel. The cinematography is brilliant.
Kieran Milne Yeah me too. I loved how some of the wide shots looked exactly like her miniature house, it added the feeling of the entire family were basically dolls for a purpose which they in the end were.
I think it has to do with the vivid colours with very less mixing between them. Very Kubrickian I'd say.
That's the first thing that came to mind also...a slow burn in which the music added a chill...loved it
The slow zoom-in in some scenes was very Kubrick as well. Same with the outdoor shots that went from dark to light in a snap (even though I can't recall a Kubrick movie that did that exactly, it still seemed very Kubrick)
Kieran Milne Kubrick often used one point perspective shots in his movies, which forces the viewer to examine the entire shot. The mind starts to wonder if things are hidden within or placed in a corner, creating an uneasy feeling. This movie utilized that style of filmmaking a lot!
So far this is the only movie that I dont think I can ever rewatch.
Its like revising a nightmare, you'd have to have some big ass balls to want that experience again.
It’s such a good movie to rewatch though! You see the events of the movie in a different light after knowing how it all comes together.
I think this movie demands repeat viewings. There's no way you can take in everything by just watching it once. I've seen it several times and I'm still discovering things I hadn't noticed before.
Give it a few years when you kinda forget. This film has some real staying power.

I have watched this without even knowing who was in it or even seeing a trailer...well...this is the best drama-horror I have ever seen recently. Instant classic, it disturbed me in a meaningful way.
The way they intentionally made it something that would never be able to be entirely guessed or predicted is really amazing because you get a sense of compassion and empathy with the characters because you’re just as confused as they are. Basically what I’m trying to say is it’s extremely Immersive and depending on the person it can be down right painful. The way you feel for Annie when she’s trying to explain things she’s seen to her husband and him just pushing it to the side even though he feels it deep in his gut that things are happening too. The director touched on all of the characters with a completely different feeling and domineer. AND CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT HOW DELECTABLE THE CAMERA ANGLES ARE???? Like they are seriously a hugely overlooked aspect that added a huge amount of suspense, tension and uneasiness. This was one of the first horror films I was actually alive to see in theaters and thoroughly enjoy.
I just saw it a second time. I found it just as creepy and intense as the first viewing. I consider it to be a new horror classic. Despite any similarities to stories from other films, I felt "Hereditary" had a story that unfolded in a visceral and realistic way. Especially in how a family would react in similar circumstances. As far as the paranormal side goes, I would leave that up to the individual audience member to decide what it means to them.
The family relationship elements are what really takes this over the top for me.

I’ve seen some spooky dooky movies. I was locked up the whole time and couldnt sleep. I was too afraid to turn of the fucking lights and close my eyes seeing the shit graved into my head.
it wasn't THAT horrifying, but it was very thought provoking and the family was so easy to relate to. Peter was easy to sympathize with. Trying to save someone then killing them accidentally, and just avoiding the inevitable of everyone else knowing what happened. maybe it didn't feel real to him until The next morning like I thought he was just in shock.The dinner table scene whenever he was like, "Is there something you want to say, Mom?" I love that they had his character poke at her and be affected by her the way he was also (like during the séance and whenever she woke him up and he was terrified of her and didn't want her touching him at all whenever she tried to hug on him after and ESPECIALLY whenever she said I never wanted to be your mother lmao the whole theater gasped). I would be terrified as well as annoyed by her (like the Dad whenever she makes a scene of the accident including head and all!) I sympathized with her and even cried during the second funeral whenever she was balling so hard, I was disgusted and annoyed with her whenever she made the scene of the accident, and I was terrified of her at the end obviously. I connected with the father also! He was doing the best he could, yet everything was falling apart around him. It was emotional, and the end was so disturbing and awful for Peter..It was terrifying, but I slept just fine, alone in my bed, and with the lights off..Thats just me though; I have always loved horror movies and I agree with Chris on being dumbfounded at numerous parts in this one. It was insane, deep, and thought provoking from start to finish.

It actually has 1 jumpscare (the clicking noise while the mom is driving) and it is timed perfectly even I jumped, something I never normally do. Overall, great movie - but I do agree with a lot of others about the ending being somewhat bad or perhaps a "misfit" compared to the rest of the movie.

I watched this a couple nights ago and thought "I think this is probably what the Exorcist was like, back in the day" (I'm 32 rn). It basically had me afraid of (unsettled in) the dark in my own home, because of dumb crap like the way light reflects off one painted surface versus another as I walk. I just said "that fuckin' movie".
I'm not a horror type of guy, and I'm not sure if "scary" is the main word I'd personally use, but it absolutely unsettled me through a sort of sensory overload all throughout. When I described it to some family, I focused more on the theme of sanity. Really well done.
I watched it , and it was like 2 am when the movie finished and immediately after the movie ended my internet went down, i pissed my pants so hard because that shit happened like 4,5 times before.

This is the first horror film that really scared me in 10 years and I am not exaggerating. Great review Chris!
Being a huge fan of horror movies, very very rarely does a movie truly creeps me out post-viewing. After leaving the theater I had to sit in my parked car for 2-3 minutes just to process what I just witnessed (especially in the end). Chris is totally right in this review; it was an artistic and bone-chilling masterpiece with horrifying imagery that'll leave you punched in the gut.

That pole scene resonated with me so well because when I was in college I hit a crosswalk sign after a night of drinking. I was to afraid to acknowledge what happened so I drove my mangled car back to my apartment, walked up to my room and just fell asleep pretending it didn’t happen. It wasn’t until the next day when I woke up and saw the reality of what happened. Granted I didn’t do what Peter did which was wayyyy worst but I understood what it felt like not to acknowledge your mistake and just go home and try and shake it off.

My God! You just perfectly articulated everything I thought and felt about this movie! I thought about it for almost 3 or 4 months after watching it. Just whenever I wasn't doing anything I found my mind just drifting back to it. It shocked me in such a way that I was absolutely enveloped by it, but couldn't watch it again for a little while. It touches on Mental Health but also something deeper... Darker. No horror movie has ever done for me what this movie did. I am changed and so is my view of what horror is. True fear it's subtle and creeping. It's the not knowing, but having a Feeling. This movie didn't scare me as much as it Disturbed me instead. It made me feel uneasy for quite some time which is so much better because you can only be afraid for so long but you can be disturbed and unsettled for years. And so I shall. Masterpiece

i think the scene where Annie reveals that story about her family is a really interesting bit of exposition. maybe it’s because i have social anxiety and am unfamiliar with anonymous meetings like the one she went to but it’s a part of the movie that makes me as uncomfortable as the scary aspects. she seems to go on too long, share too much, all to a room full of strangers she’s first meeting. she raises her hand, says that maybe she shouldn’t speak, and then moments later reveals all of this horror from her life without hesitation. i thought it was surprisingly well done

I’ve never seen a film that made me believe everything that was happening, it takes so many tropes and throws them out of the window. The acting is incredible, the supernatural stuff seems like it could happen it felt so real, truly a terrifying movie. I don’t want you to go watch it, but I recommend it.
This movie made me so uncomfortable. Edge of my seat, eyes glued to the screen. I wanted to look away but I couldn't. I was in shock so many times. I hated how it made me feel but that's why this movie is so amazing. It actually scared me, first time ever I felt genuine fear from a movie as opposed to the usual jolt/shock or disgust I get from usual horror movies. And I am so disappointed and angry that it got shunned completely at the Oscars even though it was the best movie of 2018

I thought the movie was truly disturbing...that car scene alone was the most horrific thing I have seen in a movie since The Human Centipede, however I am going to need to watch the movie again, alone, because my audience started laughing as soon as the truly supernatural things started occurring in the final act, and it just completely ruined the mood for me. I suppose the dark family drama aspect was pretty terrifying to me. The supernatural bits came off cheesy at points but I think the film still held a dark tone throughout that deeply unsettled me.

I found moments in this film to be almost too real for comfort. It's definitely masterful.
The fact that Collette didn't get nominated for an Oscar is no big deal, people. The Oscars don't mean a thing and are completely irrelevant. This will go down as one of her greatest roles, and a golden statue has nothing to do with that.
But it hurts when we all know she deserves an award like that. We all know how happy she would be

I went on a road trip through the West a few months ago, and when I was in Utah (where the movie was filmed) I drove past this mountain range and was like "holy shit, it's the Hereditary mountains!" (Looked it up, and it's the Wasatch Range.) Gave me a bit of a chill, not gonna lie! Don't stick my head out the window. xD

Jack Skellington where to start without giving it away. I took a bunch about 30 min before the movie started so I peaked when shit started getting weird. First off the way it was shot made it look like most of the sets were miniature just like how the mom makes miniatures. Then when shit popped off I was not expecting most of what happened. Got pretty psychological and I was caught in my feels for most of it. The house was too big for such a small family and I kept seeing shit in the corner of frames. The sound design was intense and the close ups of peoples faces made me uncomfortable. The moms spiral and her condition she has was making me wonder what was real and then to top it off there was some of the weirdest imagery(including the little girls face no offense to her but I thought it was melting). The crying faces were almost too much that I almost walked out to catch my breath. All in all i was on the brink of a very bad trip but the worst part was going home laying in bed and seeing someone in the corner of my room for the rest of the night.

This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The story is so layered that it must be rewatched multiple times to fully appreciate its message. It’s like a puzzle piecing all the information together. Truly brilliant cinema.
I came to the conclusion that the ultimate message, is basically what it says on the tin... it’s hereditary.
But for the Graham’s, what they have inherited from generations that came before them is hell on earth. Unbeknownst to the Graham family, they all have the Demon Paimon running through their bloodline. (Only the cult are aware of this fact and orchestrate every scenario to help Paimon get a male host)
Annie, Peter and Charlie each have their personal “self”, but also in them they have a demon soul bursting to break free and take full control of the host. This excludes the father, who is somewhat a literal and metaphorical saint throughout the movie.
We are watching a war of Good vs Evil taking place within each of the main characters.
Each one from the mother’s bloodline is tainted with this Demon who ultimately wants to be a male and be the sole ruler / king Paimon, and will kill even its own family members to get there. Annie sleep walking is actually Paimon taking control. This is why she attempts to burn them while they sleep. It’s Paimon trying to destroy the competition. Even subconsciously, Annie has resentment towards Peter as he is ultimately a better host for Paimon and Annie knows this, subconsciously. You can see they each have basically a split personality. Their individual self, and also their inherited Demonic bloodline. We witnessed the Demon successfully erase peters soul and take control of him, a male host, with the help of the cult.
This had been the plan all along.
It makes you question your own family history and how little we know of where we originally come from, what runs through our own bloodline??
This is ultimately what cut to the core of me after studying this film. Absolute masterful piece of art from Ari Aster. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I think you’ve Interpreted the movie too literally.
Much like split personality disorder - this movie has two stories going at once. When you think back to each supernatural scene, try to imagine it as the mother genuinely losing her sanity and causing everything herself. To have legitimate mental illness such as schizophrenia and suffer such mental trauma as the characters do, would lead to all kinds of crazy delusions. We get to see the delusions as if we were the characters.
I don’t want to ruin any specifics but viewing the movie this way really opens up some deeper meaning, at least in my opinion.
When we see the father refuse to burn the book, we are shown him burning in a supernatural way. Could it be possible that the mother simply burned him herself, in her psychosis and from her perception it was the delusion of a supernatural demon. What seems real to her but is in reality just a tragic mental breakdown leading to murder.

Just got out of it. So few films ever truly scare me. Its just been The Blair Witch Project, the first Paranormal Activity, and The Babadook, but now Hereditary joins that list of films that have truly terrified me. Phenomenal.

This film was so scary...made me feel bad??? unnerved ...the scene in the attic with the beheaded figures
totally unnerved me. I try not to think about that scene but here and there it flashes at the back of my brain.
I was just saying this to my brother. It made me feel terrible and I loved it. So oppressive is the mood in this film.👊🏾
