아이유는 음역대도 음역대인데 표현할 수 있는 목소리가 참 다양한게 대단해
her voice is naturally airy and a bit raspy/mature but the recent years her vocal health got worse, she's lacking support and has a hard time reaching high notes (only in a very quiet light airy head voice), also 3 octaves are the basic range, vocal coaches say even non-singers should have that range. She's one of my favorite artist, I'm just worried for her vocal health, her voice is not comparable to what it used to be in her early years... but I love her even if she doesn't improve lol :) ♡
has it really? i watched a lot of her concert videos and i feel like she strains less. she used to strain a lot during her good day and you and i days.
actually 2 octaves is what everyone has, considering chest voice and falsetto in case you don't already have a mixed voice.
and I think even though her support has gotten kinda neglected, we saw her sing with a connected head voice live (!!!), she seems to feel a lot more confident and her singing style has changed to an airier softer manner, which you can see in Pallette, BBIBBI, And so love is, Jam Jam, etc.
Support is great but if you just take care of your voice and don't oversing you can do fine: Madonna has less than favorable technique but her songs are simple and she doesn't pull a pop diva on us, so her voice has been quite intact for 20+ years. IU seems to know what she's doing more than ever, finally we can all rest and know she's doing music that she loves and singing it the way she wants to.

@@andre-cmyk yeah... I think what matter the most is her happiness, health, and career longevity. Uaenas can care less about acrobatic vocal as long as she is happy and make good music as her wish.
I think she sometimes still can changes her technique to her old way (depending to songs and her condition too), but dont want to do it so much. She is super professional and know what she can and what she cant, and know her condition the best; and she have a management team behind her. I believe her company and LOEN, big player behind her always choose the best for her.
I am just a music lover, but from what I observed, many of her songs are difficult and she overused her voice during her early career (many music shows, variety shows, radio shows, live performances, and MCs). Yes her voice is changed now, and I think she knows it well that is why she choose relatively easier songs for her concert and only sings the difficult ones once during encore.
She started to write songs and give them to other singers whose voice suit the song's message.

You did a great job with this one,,, listening to 120 songs and analyzing the voice is not an easy task.
Also let's appreciate IU, I mean she sang 120 different songs in less than a decade of her career after only months of intensive training. It is so much material to be reviewed.
Now in 2020, she has 3 more mini albums, one remake album, a couple singles, some collaborations and live duets.
I hope you can tell us if there is any improvement from her singing technique.
Criticisms or not, I just love the compilation coz IU is love 💜💜 She may not be the greatest vocalist out there but as long as she continues to enjoy crafting music that I love to hear, then IU and I are both good.
@James Kelly I went to check to make sure, so in the original song "If You" by Big Bang, T.O.P. sings Bb2's, then dips down for an A2 and up to C#3. IU was singing D3's, dipped down for a C#3 then ended on F3. That'd match the melody T.O.P. was singing within the key she's singing in, a major third above his. So I think it's C#3 still even if airy af.

IU does have a very wide range. I am also a singer and have her as my major influence with singing for around 5 years. I had to stop because I was damaging my vocal cords. I still love her today and she dis improve and have better techniques now but I stopped singing her songs. They were extremely strenuous.

In any discipline of the arts including music, being the best-skilled technician doesn't always mean success or give more credence in the history of things. Name some of the greatest artists in painting, sculpture, music for example. Does having perfect English grammar mean you are a literary genius that can sell a billion books or move a billion hearts in the English language?
Although great vocalists can elevate music into something special when 'showing off their skill but imagine missing out on the work of Louis Armstrong, James Brown, Nina Simone, Damien Rice, Adele, The Beatles, Taylor Swift, John Mayor who may not have the greatest range, but makes fantastic memorable music that connects and resonates with people all over, even they don't belt out the range and powerful vocals like a Mariah, Whitney or Celine to satisfy the criteria of great vocalists.
I personally think although IU's 10 months of training at age 15 vs someone who received 5-10 years training before debut can be considered as a 'technical' handicap, it was ultimately what was freeing and allowed her to develop, experiment, be creative, and made her into the singer/songwriter/producer/artist today (She still got a long way to go through, I am very much looking forward to her work in her 30s/40s and beyond). I have always appreciated her unshowy sincere vocal, and think she suits acoustic folk/jazz where she simply shines. Other than there's an unpretentious fresh quality to it. It is in keeping with her honest humble empathetic nature and thoughtful character. At the same time still able to retain those micro nuances of sensitivity, freshness, ingenuity, and quirkiness that she has and I hope she doesn't lose out on being too 'practiced'. It gives an authenticity, originality to her expressions that a 'better' classically trained vocalist may not be able to bring (probably one of the main reasons she is capable of delivering great covers in multiple languages, absorb the essence of the material to make it into her own), as they would have conformed to a western educated skilled expressions rather than the ability to truly self-express freely as a unique individual rather than a school of learning. It is one of the reasons why folk music will always be more popular than something like a European Opera even if you have the greatest singers in the cast. Real-life is more folk/jazz after all.

How do you count C3 in the first clip? It sounds below her comfort range.
If we are going to talk about comfort range, anything below Bb3 or maybe A3 is way below what she can execute well without losing connection between her vocal cords and breath support. So really anything below that is just notes she could potentially develop better, so I count them all.

Are singers like Lalah Hathaway, India Arie, Toni Braxton, or Diana Krall considered as contralto singers? +Fransisca Amanda I don't now Lalah Hathaway, India Arie or Diana Krall but I know Toni Braxton is a low mezzo soprano who sings with a lowered larynx. Ana Carolina, a brazilian singer and Nine9 from the Korean band Dear Cloud, theyre both contraltos. Jessie J has resonance and consistency in support up to C5 down from A3. She doesn't truly have much above C5, she generally becomes tight and screechy, her mix becomes shouty and her runs can be overbearing and out of place. Her lower range is not very developed and she doesn't possess a head voice. Her mix is small in size when producing resonance as well.

I can't hear it either. Its like an implied note, the one that the melody indicates, would be that note, or the note that the original singer sings. But here to me, its not just airy, its all air. Vapor.

+Tess Tran it depends on how much free time I have to just sit down and work on it really. It can take 1 to 5 days? Maybe? Eunjis took me a few hours, it was REALLY quick but Nauls took me more than a week.

+HONEY MONEY She's neither good nor bad. Her technique is kind of underdeveloped, she often places her voice in her nose and she has only shown support up to B4. For a Soprano, not being able to sing with proper support and placement in her mix, in the fifth octave (C5 ~ B5) is quite underwhelming. Not only are her higher notes underdeveloped, her lower range is quite muffled and airy, while her head voice is inexistent and instead she uses a falsetto. So she isn't bad, she's just not a developed vocalist.

I really dislike MR Removed videos haha I like it that they sang this song! I like this S.E.S. song. 1:23 girl? She doesn't really sound tired to me. I don't follow Lovelyz, but her support is just weak so her overall tone production is kind of shaky, her tone airy and her placement nasal so her overall sound isn't very strong. Their harmonies were quite nice here, most of the time there's always one of them who's off.

+Taeyeon Snsd ... yes of course. Beyonce is currently one of the best vocalists in this generation. Ariana can't even produce resonance anymore, like she used to before 2013. She can mix B5 yes sure, but what good is that if anything above B4 is tense? Beyonce is a mezzo with resonance on F5, support down to C3, a head voice up to D6 and agility throughout her voice, so much control.

You should see Chuther’s video about her technique. I am a fan and with her songs, it’s majority focuses on head voice specially with the really high notes.
