  • Now that the midsummer festivities are over, it's time for... another Ys game... I swear THIS is the last one we'll play....
    ...for a while at least.
    My thoughts:
This one is not nearly as good as the previous ones. One reason for this is how short it feels. I know it it is pretty much just as long as the two previous games, time-wise, but it feels a lot shorter thanks to the fact that not much really happens. There's five levels all of which are formed of repetitive tunnels with next to no story reasons behind them other than "go and collect the thing", which makes the game feel really short, and not in the good way.
Another complaint I have is Elena. Honestly, up until the last boss I kept thinking she was bad guy, who was set to betray Adol. I mean, why would a civilian with no fighting skills or weapons just venture into dangerous dungeons filled with monsters and how would they be able to reach the depths of those dungeons.... unless they were one of the bad guys? But it turns out she is just an idiot with zero self-preservation instinct or understanding of the situation. That final speech she gives before the final boss, made it obvious she was just an idiot.
And relating to that, Adol's depression arc, right before that final dungeon is also very odd, and very un-Adol-like, Considering the events of the first two games, I just can't see Adol getting depressed now that the idiot girl gets kidnapped by mysterious teleportation abilities from the bad guy. For one, I don't believe Adol would still be thinking she wasn't in league with the bad guys. For two, there was literally nothing he could've done, which he should know having been in worse situations and witnessing / being unable to stop worse things in the previous games.
And there are also many other things the characters do that are just weird and nonsensical...
Overall, you're better off leaving this book to gather dust somewhere, 4/10.
PS. This is to be the second game from Falcom, which went from top-down perspective to side-scrolling and, in my opinion, was worse than the predecessor. Legend of Zelda also tried it, with same results...

Glad this is much better than that awful snes music let alone flinching enemies 😂.
Cool bass and acting in vid.
Oath in felghana was a cool remake on steam too, which easy mode helped a ton. I do avoid the party games given I gotta choose rock paper scissors for attacks, and many characters aren't good like ys 8 dandruff guy Sahad. Napishtim was cool though.

Yea, the PC Engine (or TurboGrafx) really does seem to get the best ports out of all the other consoles (especially concerning music), which makes me somewhat surprised at how niche or forgotten the console has become.
Though, in this game it is quite annoying how you need to keep swinging your sword to attack, which coupled with the fact that you can just press the attack button down to keep constantly attacking, feels somewhat redundant or unnecessary.
and I'm actually playing a party RPG for next week (it won't be an Ys game, though)...
