One detail, you mentioned stainless steel. It is not made of stainless steel. For this lightweight material to handle the heat cycles well we went with mild steel which has been tin plated. A light coat of oil between uses to keep it looking nice 👍

In My humble opinion , the
Scout stove is the best stove of the lot ! The main
drawback ( if You want to call it that ) is it won't fold
flat . So what , it's not designed to .

I've made my emrgency stove from a no 303 stew can, turned upside down, or have opened both ends and used steel hanger material to make my cross bars to put pots on to ccook with. I used a church key to put my air holes in the sides, top and bottom. That's it, feed it with twigs broken up., have used sm serno cans as well. Works

    👍 A nice, informative Review .. thanks.
It looks like a very well thought out design. Plated Steel as against Stainless? At first, I had reservations .. but after some 'mulling' .. an acceptable Compromise taking into account the Cost and Weight savings. Anyway, some simple post-use Maintenance won't kill anybody.
'Swiss Gel' .. nice to see you using it Ernie. Here in Switzerland, it's equivalent (just branded differently) is my GoTo when rustling up a Breakfast, or testing a new Recipe on my 3rd Floor Flat Balcony (Apartment in USA-Speak 😊). An extremely clean-burning and safe-to-use fuel. Ideal even for 'Urban Brews' .. Trips to the City, using an Esbit Folder /Equivalent. Enough Parks in Basel where one can 'hunker down for a hot Cuppa Soup or similar.
One thing though .. the Chinese 'Knock-offs' will be following soon. I sincerely hope that USA-based Community (and elsewhere) will exclusively support Firbox in this Project .. and not eventually migrate to a cheaper copy.
    'Support your Own!
    Take care ..

Not bad for an emergency stove. Plated steel will rust or burn out, eventually, but fwiw, this was designed to be used in emergencies. Rub it down with cheap cooking oil after every use, or when storing it for extended periods of time and it might last a good, long while.

Great review! Another of Steve’s well thought out designs. I have a 5” FB stove and a Nano, and during a several day power outage I used my Trangia in the 5” Firebox to boil water, make coffee, and some simple cooking in a pan over the alcohol flame. Worked great, kept us fed. But the Scout offers a storage area for additional items like lighters, matches, etc. which are always needed in an emergency. I like the sturdy top and bottom covers and the way the cross pieces fit.

    • @aaronginther3831

I am liking the idea of storage as well. Thinking a few tea light candles and a can of sterno. Possibilities are endless. Its always nice to have things ready to go when the need arises, beats running around in the dark looking for stuff

NIce emergency set up at a nice price. I do think that many of these wood stoves with the ash plate miss an opportunity to use denatured alcohol. In the area where you placed the Esbit tab they should press into the ash plate a depression to hold and oz. or two of liquid alcohol. No need to carry a separate burner and would add neg. weight. People may not have an alcohol burner and in an emergency you burn what you have or can find. Seems like an easy upgrade in versatility. Swiss fire paste same as the M-71 stove fuel??? Where to get? Thanks

When I saw the first vid on this, I couldn't see the benefit over the normal collapsible ones from firebox.
In hindsight though if you consider this as also a container, you can store esbit, cannister, lighter, kindling sticks etc in the stove and you have all your kit in one.
I still wouldn't take it backpacking so the scout name doesnt work for me. Maybe the Firebox ES or something would have been better?

Been watching the camping/outdoor videos for about eight years now. This was one of the most comprehensive, well done reviews that I have seen on RUclips. I most certainly hit the subscribe button and will be back for more. I just recently bought a small titanium wood stove about the same size to hold my new Trangia with the soldered crimp ring. However, it does not have near the flexibility of the new Scout. Good Job!

I'm experimenting for heating only with fire sources (Sterno/alcohol) that can be used safely in an enclosed/ventilated area (vehicle/tent). Stove sets on a small cookie sheet with a small metal plate over the flame to radiate heat. Have achieved some very impressive results for heating a smaller area. Any others out there have any suggestions/comments for using the Firebox Stove for this purpose?

A very interesting stove. I prefer stoves that flatten like the original two fireboxès. It would be nice if a very innovative stove was created that could be a non-hazardous tent warmer and food cooker that flattened for pack carry and no modification needed for the tent ( four season ) . It could be called the Firebox Four Season Stove. I would definitely purchase something like that easily. It could be made in ttent sizes for two persons, four perrsons, six persons and so on. A collaboration between Firebox and Nemo tents would be fantastic and likely very profitable. I hope Firebox is reading this. Mors Kochanski laid out the principles for a supershelter and if followed by the tentmaker and firebox, the best outdoor product in the world could be created. A solar swamp cooler or air conditioner would be a great optional add-on. The technology is out there, it just requires someone with vision to pull it all together. It must be lightweight and packable .

Thanks for the video. Wait....just a sec....Esbit's Material Safety Data Sheet states combustion can create formaldehyde, ammonia, nitrogen oxide and hydrogen cyanide. When burned, the chemical oxidation of the fuel yields noxious fumes, requiring foods being cooked to be contained in a receptacle such as a pot or pan .I know no one that would use Esbit tabs indoors even in an emergency. Food for thought.
