The Scene, saved so many black young lives from 6pm to 7pm in all urban cities where it viewed in the State of Michigan, from the early 70 to the mid 80’s. Thank you guys for being the best one hour babysitters and bringing families together to enjoy the Greatest Dancers in the World. ❤️❤️❤️
I grew up in a white household downriver. we loved the scene!!. It was like we were missing out on something cool and we were afraid the social stigma of racism. But my parents didn't care about all that. I have to thank them for that!! Detroit will rise!!
I love coming back to this video to look for new responses and possible leads to more clips. I was also one of the few white chicks to dance on The Scene. I started watching it in 1982 and was blown away by the music. I knew I HAD to be on that show. I was the really tall white girl... as tall as Lawanda. My trademark was wearing one black leather glove, LOL. Oh man - great stuff.
I was a dancer on The Scene from 1976-1982 they called me Mr.Robot. Other dancers from my Scene era are Lenny Turner, Cheryl peebles, Michella Brown Cheryl griffin Bobby, Denise Fry, bubble-up, Lawanda Grey, Fonzi, lorenzo went on Soultrain and American Bandstand. Cheryl and Bobby won the $100.000 grand prize on Dance Fever...........Wow the memories...................Mark Williams
I'm from Windsor Canada, which is right across the Detroit River from Detroit city. I watched it as a youth in Windsor. The Scene will always be apart of my childhood. Loved the Scene!
Hello neighbor!! I’m in Detroit, born & raised. I always loved as a lil child how we could watch Canadian shows on channel 9. I think there was another Canadian channel too, but idk the #. I had my own black and white TV in my playroom I’d find Canadian shows on. I’m in My 40’s.
I remember how we used to get out of school at Cass Tech back in '75 and '76 and catch the bus (or walk) down to WGPR and stand in line to get on The Scene. Those were the days!
This show was one of the reasons why I wanted to move to the city of Detroit. I used live way out in the boondocks but we still could get the broadcast signal on our television. Loved the dancers and the music. It was the high light of my day
The Scene used to come on everyday, Monday-Friday, from 1975 to whenever it finally went off the air in the 1980s-I saw the very first episode in either September or October of 1975(was in my last year of high school then). And you're right-watching these old episodes do bring back memories! 12-13-23.
My grandfather, Ulysses Boykin, was a VP at the station and helped Dr. Banks get the FCC License. Glad to see there is a museum commemorating this historical institution.
I've been looking for a video from The Scene for ages! I was a dancer from 83-85. It was CRAZY. I knew Lawanda. Lots of fun, dangerous times, hehehe. Stringz, THANK YOU for posting this! Wish I could find more and see me dancing! I remember when Vanity 6 came on the show and George Clinton. After the taping we'd go to Medusa's to party. Wow. Seems like another lifetime ago.
When we got cable we (my sis and I) couldn't watch the Scene any more. There was an old tv in the garage and guess what? The Scene was back on live and popping. Lived in Toledo could get reception.
That's me in the clip at 5:48 dancing on the Scene back in the day! With that large Afro and wearing a vest. lol But that was a different song playing in this clip than was playing in the original clip. Thanks for the memories! Nat Morris is on Facebook and he has other clips of The Scene. Again, thanks for the memories!
Were you doing errol flynn dance in this clip? Could you share any info on the dance and the gang? What year was the dance and gang created. Did u guys consider what you were doing jitting? Who was the founder of the gang and the dance? Are there more errol flynns still alive? Is errol flynn east side or west side? Did you know judge mathis was in the errol flynn gang back in the day? Any other history you would like to share would be much appreciated! Thanks for your comment!!
"Blow Your House Down" was recorded by A Guy Called Gerald (not 'George'). And the "I'm gonna dis you right now" song was "100% of Disin' You" by Armando, a Chicago house legend. Long Live "The Scene"!!
Wow...the memories of our fair city. Detroit was so fun, and little did we know that The Seene would be an icon of pop culture. I was talking with my kids about Cheryl Peoples winning with her partner, also from Det. whose name escapes me, and got linked to this site from another. This is great. Can't wait to share. My friends are all over the world, but this is one thing that we can all wax nostalgic about...the dance scene in the D!
Remember the Hollywood swingers, and the awesome talent shows at Mackenzie High, awwww those were the good (great) old days, and it still holds true, SUGAR IS SUGAR AND SALT IS SALT. WGPP, remember Tiger Dan, MOJO, Marvelous Marv, Teen Profile with Dr Mary Wilks, yeah baby, I was in the building.
I was on back in early to mid-80s and often danced with Superman/Clark Kent (Ed). People sometimes called me "the other white girl" because Mary Lu was on first. People thought we were "arch" enemies but Mary Lu and I were (and still are) friends. Great to see this stuff.
I had the BIGGEST crush on you! Remember seeing you , Mary Lu and you on a club on Woodward around 14 Mile (can't remember the name). Took me about an hour to work up the courage to talk to you (you were very nice). No way I could find the guts to ask you to dance. Best of luck to you!
rayanda1 I love you, and thank you for your wonderful smile and regal dance moves you bought each day to the Scene and The New Dance Show. It was wonderful seeing you light up those magnificent programs with your grace.
Sugar is sugar, salt is salt, if you didn't get off, its not our fault!!!I miss The Scene and the hold vibe. I was five when my family moved to Detroit in '81. The Scene helped my sisters and brother get our dance move together.
OH MAN!!! TALK ABOUT A BLAST FROM THE PAST!!! BETWEEN THE SCENE, AND NORTHLAND ROLLER RINK, THE 80'S WERE THE TIMES!!! Fast Freddie went to high school with my parents!!!
Dancing in my bedroom to the Scene's theme song..Heyyeh I wanna be..be on the Scene....come and go with me..and be there n the Scene.... Those moves are muscle memory now😆😆💃💃 (now you know as much as we like to dance there ought to be dance Emojis that represent us getting up to get down!)
Wow, wild, I recognize some of the dancers. I was the skinny 19 year old white kid running camera that look terrified back around 81-82 time frame. ;-)
I learned of this show through watching old soul train clips. I'm from NYC so never heard of The Scene before watching the clips. I did stay in Detroit for a few months back in 98!~
omg, thanks for posting this video. me and my siser were talking about the scene not to long ago. this takes me back to childhood rushing home to watch the scene everyday. i remember lawanda, fast freddy, andre hines, ben west, cheyrl people, nat morris, and many others. thanks for posting this video.
The first female I was attracted to while watching the Scene for the first time in Nov.9th 2022 at age 53yrs old was Lawanda Grey.I loved her style in dress and hairstyles. She light's up on the dance floor and that why she's called the Queen of the mix on The Dance Show in Detroit Dj.Jesse the body.Lawanda stands out for me.She is very gorgeous and still look good in 2022.Sorry for the passing of Ray Henderson.
I remember Cheryl. She was incredible. I was one of three white female dancers. The woman that coordinated the dancers and chose the ones she liked best. She didn't like me much, hehehe...scandelous times, lots of fun, lucky to get out of alive. ;-)
Detroit's you are the best,. love your wisdom upon God's grace. I ws at the motown museum twice and saw the jacksons at a rehearsal . you really y bring life until the fullest. Hey, I remember seeing this news item at a friend's house back around 2003 or so---it was the first time I'd ever seen anything on the Scene, considering how long it was on. I was too young to get on it (I think they didn't let anybody under 18 on, or something like that.) I remember watching the Scene---unfortunately by the time I was old enough to get on it,it had gone off the air. I read a book about Detroit TV which devotes a chapter to the Scene, but I can't remember/find the title of it!
