I was a day one Dreamcast owner. Still one of my favorite consoles of all time. The 2k sports games were incredible and I remember them being insanely cheap at the time as they were trying to undercut EA. I want to say they were 19.99 brand new. Some of my best local-multiplayer gaming memories came playing 2k sports games on my Dreamcast.
@@Andru The $20 price was later on with Xbox/PS2/Gamecube releases. The NFL2K series was a serious competitor to EAs Madden series. One year they decided to sell it for $20 to stick to it to EA. The next year EA bought the rights to produce official NFL console games and the NFL Players right for 10 years. No other publisher could make an NFL game that included the team names, and team roster of players. 2KGames bought the same NBA rights in retaliation, but the damage was done, EA and Madden had won the console football war, by forcing the competition to quit.
@@lazarushernandez5827 What blows my mind is that there were people braindead enough to buy those football games in the first place, I mean maybe it's just me but I never found realistic sports video games to be ANY fun at all. The first game I remember playing in the late 80's early 90's was Duck Hunt, that's a much better example of how to make a sports-based game, by making it unrealistic. This is why NBA JAM is the best basketball game ever made, possibly the best sports game ever made, and there's no competition--because it was not based on real basketball but instead they made a fun unrealistic video game based on baskteball. As far as football games go there was NFL BLITZ--a far superior video game to madden.
I remember when the 2K series for Dreamcast was untouchable!!! Football was crazy!!! Miss those days. Every now and then I connect my Dreamcast for those classics... Graphically inferior compared to today's, but I feel it's more fun than today's.
Dreamcast is like the only initially successful console to ever fail. Though it did officially last with software support till 2007, i would have loved to see it truly pushed to it's limits
That's way cool. I refurbished/modded a used DC last year. That was fun in itself, and I also had mega nostalgia re-playing some of the games I had ~20 years ago. Such a cool gaming system.
Dreamcast was literally the largest change and gap ever made from console to next generation console. It was the first console to have full online gameplay.
Piracy killed it. It also had a high failure rate. I remember my dog unplugging a controller while i was playing it and practically broke the console. I googled it and it was a resistor that needed to be upgraded.
@@danbaker7045 sega didn't sell enough DC for it to be common knowledge. They were very fragile. Accidentally disconnecting your controller in the middle of game play was enough to brick the console. A quick Google in 2006 walked me through on how to fix it.
@@mgkaotic Yeah. I modded a couple used DCs last year. Replacing that little fuse on the controller board was one of the mods I did. Not sure that it was an especially "high" failure rate back in the day though.
I LOVED the Dreamcast. Seemed quite futuristic at the time. I remember being so impressed with the controller, VMUs, online capability, and the 128 bit graphics. My favorite games were Sonic Adventure, NBA 2K1, Dead or Alive 2, and Wild Metal. I'd say the DC and original Xbox are my top favorite consoles of all time! Ahh... the days when video games were cool.
I can’t believe I’m the first to mention Soul Calibur. I’d hate to see how many hours I put into that game. I remember inviting some coworkers over to hang out (and serve a dose of these thumbs) and the amazement at the game play and graphics. 8-way run was a game changer!
I know @andru played DC with “the boys” when it came out. I owned one eventually and I never regretted it - I had some of the most fun on that console, but it was sad to see SEGA die on what I think is one of their more innovative pieces of hardware. Fav games: shenmue, crazy taxi, phantasy star online, Dreamcast browser disc
Bro I was ALL ABOUT SOUL CALIBUR!!! I remember Boo DOT COM had a Dreamcast and we would just play all day in between answering phone calls, which sometimes you would only get like 10 calls in an 8 hour shift so it was just getting paid to play Dreamcast all day!!!
Best memory cards to this day. My intro to Let's get ready 2 rumble. Fun fishing game. So muched missed potential. But 8 year old me loved it back in the day. If it had the support it could have kept up with the gamecube until pokemon came out. But I would question the xbox's existence
I feel like it's a great point to make with EA. They would have sold much more consoles had they had those games on the Dreamcast alone. Let alone all the money freed up for other games they could have focused on.
such a sad story on why the Dreamcast failed! everything around it was crumbling as soon as it was launched oh my gosh! it was inevitable from the get-go! is this the console that failed in the shortest span of time in history? it certainly feels like it! great video!
Have you covered Sega Saturn or Sega CD? Sega CD was basically a Sega Genesis with CD quality music.😹 I was a Sega ONLY person back then! Game Gear was years ahead of its time!
Thanks for doing one on the Dreamcast Andru. Couple of things though... Music was proper loud, essentially the same volume as your voice, when telling a story like Jon does sometimes, you need to hear it. Second, your speed was quick, it's an incredible console and an incredible story but you whizzed through that!
I feel like if the Dreamcast came out with 32 MB of RAM and maybe a price for the 329.99 they could have competed better the game's definitely needed it. Also with ram that's one thing that drops in price over time so they could have dropped their console price to compete with the PS2. And hopefully that would have delayed the PS2 somewhat for them to increase their Ram since it was only 32 MB as well which was also underpowered.
Dreamcast actually didn't do well in Japan despite the fact that games kept releasing for almost 10 years there. DCs strongest territory was actually the US. Saturn did excellent in Japan though for sure!
The Dreamcast didn't fail. Sega made a lot bad decisions with their previous consoles and the mistakes that they made with the Dreamcast was not to include a DVD player and dial up internet connection. I still play my Dreamcast to this day. And in the early 2000 I bought a PS2 only for the DVD player and I bought like 30+ games and didn't care much for them. The controllers of the PlayStation are terrible to play fighting games I never bought a PS3 because of that. I continue to buy next generation consoles like Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox one
I feel the same. The actual Dreamcast console itself was great. Though, I wish it had broadband built in (instead of the default dial up) and a DVD player.
The problem was that in the past they made the Saturn too expensive and difficult to program games for that's why there is so many games with bad quality. When the Saturn came out was $400 or $500 I don't remember but the PlayStation was only $299 and had one processor and it was easier for game programmers to make games for it. When the Dreamcast came out was like $200 they were supposed to make it $300 with DVD player and internet connection not dial up connection. Sega is a great gaming company but they made a lot of bad businesses decisions
The Dreamcast didn’t fail it was the best console it beat the PS2 xbox in graphics I tested marvel vs capcom 2 new age of heroes on all 3 consoles the Dreamcast was the best of course the arcade machine still wins cause it’s a PC not a console nothing beats PC back in the days PC wasn’t getting digital games from the arcades they went to consoles only but the Sega Dreamcast was great it didn’t need the 4mb cartridge it’s only problem was it didn’t play movies that the PS2 and xbox did cause Sega is like Nintendo they don’t think of making their consoles having a DVD player is important

Code Veronica! 🥳😍
The Dreamcast came out when the PS1 & N64 were still very popular. Bad timing. Then the PS2 came out and finished off the Dreamcast.
Still love my Dreamcast!!! Still great games for it that NEVER released elsewhere!!!
The Dreamcast was mostly plagued by bad timing and mistakes made prior to its launch, not by being a bad console or having bad games.
The PS2 was not ¥800... that's like $8 USD. It was priced just under ~¥40,000.
When I saw Marvel vs Capcom for Dreamcast I bought it..I had maybe three games but that one I played the most. (Marvel vs Capcom)
Oh that game was FANTASTIC. Tag team fighting game with all those characters.
