While the band had to practice some time with Charlie Callas on the song, they had to keep their "walkout" a secret from him. The look of Callas's face when he realizes he had just been pranked is priceless. It takes a lot to get a comedian to laugh and the Tonight Show Band pulled it off.
Yes. My friend Charlie callas. Was a classy. Super guy. I was the only one that he would let cut his hair and his wife Eve every time he came into the shop bin fort Lee nj. What a fun time. And not to mention the countless times. To see him in Atlantic City and Vegas. Rest in peace. My good friend. Love ya. Pete. Longo
I've never see this one....who knew Charley Callas was a drummer........but, then again....so was Johnny! Great performance and video....thanks for posting!
Most folks don't remember him for being a brilliant musician! This was FANTASTIC! He wasn't just banging away! He backed out for soloists....he knew where to look, he knew everything about that performance to show that he knew exactly what he was doing! There was some incredible talent and versatility back then!
Charlie was a fantastic drummer. He played with many notable bands. On one Tonight Show he talked about getting fired from Tommy Dorsey's band because he goofed off too much. He was a much underappreciated talent.
You know, while we think of him as a comedic actor and stand-up comedian, the fact is he broke into show business as a drummer. Obviously, he is a very accomplished musician. Buddy Rich always spoke very highly of him, as a matter of fact.
Great ! I am a retired trumpet player. I stayed up every night to see if the band was going to play a chart. Do you know what seasons and episodes the band played full numbers. Keep em coming
I did not know that Charlie Calis was a professional drummer. And. A darn good one.
Tremendous drumming and a great comic. RIP Mr. Callas

High praise, indeed!
Saw Charlie Callas opening for Dionne Warwick at The Sands Las Vegas back in about 1976 or '77
He didn't even miss a beat when he noticed the band was gone.
Great.
Was that fun or what! It updated Gene Krupa's recording... but Gene had Anita O'Day. Great post!
Back in the time people had talent.....

That is no mere hobbyist….Imagine being that good of a percussionist but then going into standup!
