  • THE BEAUTY OF THE USAT LIBERTY SHIPWRECK IN TULAMBEN, BALI
The USAT Liberty shipwreck in Tulamben is a majestic 120 meter long wreck. The remains of a US World War II freighter lie just 50 meters from the beach. The USAT (United States Army Transport) ship, not USS, Liberty was torpedoed on January 11, 1942 at 04:15 by a Japanese submarine while crossing the Lombok Strait carrying materials (rubber and railroad parts) from Australia to the Philippines. Two US destroyers docked to the ship and tried to tow it to Singaraja port. The damage was immense and Liberty took too much water. The captain of the Liberty took the ship to the coast of Tulamben, miles away from a safe harbor.
For 21 years he lived there. The local residents of the Tulamben Bali area secured all valuables on board the USAT Liberty. Even part of the ship's deck was seized. In 1963, the shipwreck Liberty was propelled to its present location by the fatal eruption of Bali's Mount Agung volcano. During this process, the Liberty's hull broke in two. Now he lay on a sandy slope 90° on his side parallel to the beach. The Liberty's hull faces Tulamben beach while the side of the shipwreck deck faces the sea.
The Liberty wreck is the most visited dive site in Bali.
The famous Liberty Bali has the perfect depth for scuba diving, from 2.5 meters to 29 meters. There are several impressive ways of swimming.
Be careful because the structure of the wreck is not stable, year after year the parts collapse.
A fine growth of inlaid animals covered the wreck of the Liberty Tulamben. Marine biologists estimate that about 400 different species of reef fish live on Liberty. Coincidentally, this site was visited by a large pelagic species. Turtles and black tip reef sharks are a common sight, while many critters seek refuge in the nooks and crannies of Liberty.
