Giovanni Gabrieli represents the pinnacle of the Venetian tradition of poly-choral composition for secular and sacred instrumental and choral forms - works that were intended to resonate from the separated choir lofts of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice. Gabrieli embodies the heritage brass players in much the way that string players have embodied the heritage of Brahms, Bach, and Beethoven, singers have of Verdi and Puccini, and wind players have of Mozart. Nothing stirs the blood of a brass player more than reveling in the rich sonorities of a Gabrieli canzona. This album focuses on the choral motets and makes a new contribution to the Gabrieli brass tradition.
Recorded at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City on May 14, 15, 21, and 22, 2012.
