The 757 was THE best airplane I ever flew in my 35 years at world's largest airline... Until I checked out on the 777. The 75' is the perfect jet for the mountain ski cities and short r/w's. it's perfect for Jackson Hole, Eagle (Vail), and noise abatement a/p's. It has thrust to go to the moon if you're climbing up out of mountains, sips gas at cruise, hold for hours, if necessary, then comfortably land on short runway. All with passengers and crew and their luggage and cargo loads comparable to a DC-10. Why didn't you make a plastic 757 Mr. Boeing? Designed with pencil and slide rule... awesome aircraft.
INDEED!! I have yet to hear any aviation professional say anything bad about the 757. My only complaint, at 6'3, was that airlines crammed it full of as many seats as possible because of its outstanding performance and versatility. Did Boeing keep the tooling? What would Mr. Boeing say?

The 737 has short landing gear which only had to clear the JT8D engines, now it has the small diameter version of the LEAP engines, several inches smaller than the version used on the Airbus NEO models, which means it is less economical, but shifted forward and up. Trying to match Airbus A321 185-240 passengers has pushed the 737 far past safe limits. Disagree? Well there's the homicidal MCAS, and most recently the pop-off doors, anything for a profit, and the engine inlets that get destroyed by the anti-ice system. If Boeing did a 757neo with a modern engine they'd be head to head with the A321 and could even take more passengers. They could even re-use the FBW from the 777/787 and maybe even put a carbon wing on it. Instead they persist to try to wring money out of the 737 which traces it's systems design back to the 367-80 in the early 50s or even late 40s.
I've landed the 787-8 in about 4500 feet at max landing weight. If you're light enough you could still do this. 757 is a really good airplane, especially for high-altitude airports.
Yeah - I took a flight MIA to LAS a few years back on American. Rocketed out of Miami - thing was definitely overpowered I think having been derived from the 767 - now they build sh!t thanks to "executives"
Yeah, made this landing many times in the old days when the runway was not paved but dredged up coral. You used to have to make a pass to ensure the runway was clear. Once the 727 ran over a piglet. The momma sow bit the nose wheel such that it had to be replaced before taking off again. Crazy times.
Continental "Air Mic" 727? Been there, done that. LOL I was assigned to an Air Force Civic Action Team (CAT) on Weno Island (i.e., Moen) way back in the day. I miss those days...
@@dean8842 yes, Air Mike. My dad was a maintenance supervisor. We lived in Guam from ‘68 to ‘73 and in Phonpei(ponape) from ‘73 to ‘75. Landing in Truk you had to put down as close to the end as you could. No tarmac just a white coral strip. Always when the plane stopped and turned back for the terminal the water sure looked close. Also, coming in you could swear you were landing on the water. Then suddenly the runway would appear and every brake and reverser would come on. The coral wrecked havoc on the planes back then.
...sad that they did't commit to a successor when they had the chance.. One was under consideration after the relaxation of ETOPS but the programme was cancelled in 2011 leaving what has become a growing market to Airbus, Meanwhile Boeing ended up considering pushing a 44 year old design to a forugh generation and beyond it's original concept as a short to medium haul aeroplane to serve small city airports... Three years ago they tossed around a concept known as the NMA to fill this market but it was already too little too late as development time fo a clean sheet design takes about a minimum of 5 years. By then Airbus would have still pretty much cornered the thin long range market. HAd boeing gone ahead in 2011 with a a new technology successor to the 757 it would have appeared at just the right time.and likely had both better range and performance with more efficient wing design and new generation high bypass engines. it could have even benefited from higher use of composites making it lighter and more aerodynamically efficient than it's older sibling. The 737 Max 10 is not a 757 replacement.as it cannot even match the range or performance of the 757-200 series. Operating from airports like this is was what the 757 was made for. with it's incredible power to weight ratio wjich gave it superior performance for hot/high airport operations..
I once flew a ferry flight 757-200 from LAX to LAS day VFR on the Loop departure off of 24L LAX. From opening the throttles on the runway to 12,000' it was 2 minutes and 56 seconds. That included ground roll time. My favorite is the 727. At one time I wouldn't have given a second thought to a 4,000' runway for landing in the 72. It would do it easily . Getting out a different story. One of my good friends (now gone) flew there with Air Micronesia 727s when it was coral.
I landed there multiple times in the late 80’s, early 90s with now defunct Continental (Air Micronesia). Maujuro, Ponape, Palau…I remember the 727s using every inch of runway to land & take off. Sometimes they’d even have to dump fuel prior to landing to be at proper weight. Beautiful places with friendly people.
Chuuk used to be called Truk. Yes, that Truk, the infamous atoll whee Japan had one of its largest military installations in WWII. The atoll is littered with the remnants of the Japanese occupation, including fortifications, sunk warships, and decrepit planes. I would love to visit someday.
6006 x 150 ft. / 1831 x 46 m 28 September 2018 - Air Niugini Flight 73, a Boeing 737-800, landed short of the runway and came to rest in the lagoon. One passenger died and was recovered later by divers. The remaining 35 passengers and 11 crew escaped serious injury.
If this is Chuuk airport, I used to fly in here in a 727 on Continental. To take off, they had to rev the engines to get speed then make a u-turn on the runway to take off.
I’m only a private pilot but I have a passion for the looks and ride feel of all types of airliners especially the window seat just behind the wing. There’s something mythical about watching the wings - junk - unfolding and shimmer in the wind. The 727 has always been my favorite. The 757 is the new boss in class now and a good looking profile. Just don’t follow one to closely on final with her panties down.
The runway is more than 6000 ft long. The perspective (angle of the camera/approach) = just makes it look short. A 757 can take off and land on a runway over 5700 ft without a problem. Contrary to popular belief, pilots are not daredevils that risk their lives every minute. It's all science, physics, approved procedures etc.
@@retrovideoquest Yeah, and most people are used to seeing the ones in the states. I think JFK has one that's over 14,200 feet long, so the better part of 3 miles. The other two runways are around 8,000 and 12,000 feet.
What I found most interesting was looking at the black marks on the runway letting you know where the wheels first touched down. And then again at the end of the runway where they felt the need to lock up their brakes….lol.
@@topcat43truffles15 the heavy black marks on the other end are from landing when the wind has changed direction. You always take off and land into the wind.

Chuuk island, wonderful place to visit, and Scuba is great. Landed their many times with Air Mic, NuJu, and JuJu 2p78 727 with ADF approaches. Fun times and great people.
I flew for TWA . We would take the 757 nonstop BCN-JFK. We had the big center fuel tanks and loaded we could take off from the short runway at BCN which was like 8,000 feet and do JFK. TWA used to go into the airport in Hawaii that had the short runway and would go nonstop to LAX with a full load. After AA took us over, they put an airbus on it and had to block about 40 seats to do the nonstop.
In the 2000er Condor (and LTU) got the 757 - on flights from Bremen or Hamburg to St. Cruz de La Palma / Canarian Islands/Spain. Also short runway with water in front off and at the end of the runway and winds from the mountains on the left side when approaching RW36. Landed there even in bad weather like a military jet.I remember one flight (as a passenger ;-) we start from EDDW to EDDH (only about 140 km) to take over some more pasengers and then to La Palma. Nice experience but I think they wouldn't do that anymore cause of costs of Kerosin .. anyway I guess the 757 isn't anymore in the Condor fleet, now they are using A320.I would be happy when the 757 would be flyable in MSFS Flightsimulator.

Good job boys. Reverse thrust was useful. I've never flown onto a runway like this but I have done numerous landings in New Guinea with narrow grass strips. A mountain on one end and one side. A cliff on the other side and no go around.

I’ve been into this airport a thousand times with Ryan and APA. Want some fun go into these airports out here at night in bad wx and down to minimums on a ADF approach. It’s not Yap which is the middle of the island. Also another 727 landed 3 ft short at PTPN. No one hurt. Many times you had to figure in winds to get legal for T/O with max load.
Love this… I am going to be really sad when carriers retire the 757 from PAX service. There is nothing like a max thrust takeoff and climb out, especially in strong headwinds straight at you. You’d swear the aircraft is not moving fast enough to fly. Thanks! 👍👍👍
So how does it compare to the 737NG/MAX? From what I see, takeoff, climb, cruise, and landing performance, are all superior. Payload without question? Mtx? Acquisition costs? The airlines stopped ordering the 757 in 2004, in favor of the 737, hence the cancelation.
I regularly landed a B757 into FHSH at max landing weight with zero problems. Also landed in into FHAW during runway works and used RWY 13 (1500m) avail and with an 80000kg aircraft you could vacate at B with a 10-15 kt headwind. (Look it up) it’s short.

A camera zoomed through the window doesn't give much of an idea of landing. The op needs to put the camera in manual mode, pull back and get the crew and adjust exposure to bring up the inside of the cockpit. At least it's in landscape.
Santos Dumont Airport at downtown Rio de Janeiro, has a few less than 1600 meters, and Boeing 707 and Airbus A320 has special brakes and pilots ad hoc for this kind of runway. And has a beautiful vision of the town, its skyscrapers and the Guanabara Bay.
History could have been very different for Chuuk. When the atomic bomb was in development the targeting committee seriously considered the island's Japanese naval base as the first target. By the time the bomb was ready the base had been largely neutralized by conventional bombing, and Chuuk was spared.
Been there, done that on an Alaska Airlines B737-700 flying the "milk run". Shortest commercial flight from previous stop in Petersburg I've ever been on--12 minutes--then a screeching landing with full reverse thrusters on that short runway. YIKES! I laughed out loud when they announced "Welcome to Wrangell where the local time is..." Really??? What are the odds the two cities 12 minutes apart would be in different time zones?😂

Methinks that this *might* be a simulator (someone has stolen the 'Space Simulator' (old reference to a loony toons cartoon, there) because the boats in the harbor have the same wake and wake lines, everything is even in regard to background, wake length changes perspective as the A/c gets closer. Landing lights are WAY too big! Just seems as though it might be a fake view -- being offered as being actually real, but only a simulator with video being shot within the cockpit behind training flight personnel. Something's off.
warrenholmes33 Looks to me very real. Look e.g. at that faint bird flying right across the airfield starting at 2:38 from behind that 5 sign to the left. Just ordinary hot day on a Pacific island.
By the looks of the runway the pilots have had the brakes on before the wheels hit the concrete.. I wouldn't have been surprised to see arrestor cables across the runway 😮

It’s not Yap which is the middle of the island. Also another 727 landed 3 ft short at PTPN. No one hurt. Many times you had to figure in winds to get legal for T/O with max load.
Love this… I am going to be really sad when carriers retire the 757 from PAX service. There is nothing like a max thrust takeoff and climb out, especially in strong headwinds straight at you. You’d swear the aircraft is not moving fast enough to fly. Thanks! 👍👍👍
So how does it compare to the 737NG/MAX? From what I see, takeoff, climb, cruise, and landing performance, are all superior. Payload without question? Mtx? Acquisition costs? The airlines stopped ordering the 757 in 2004, in favor of the 737, hence the cancelation.

I regularly landed a B757 into FHSH at max landing weight with zero problems. Also landed in into FHAW during runway works and used RWY 13 (1500m) avail and with an 80000kg aircraft you could vacate at B with a 10-15 kt headwind. (Look it up) it’s short.

A camera zoomed through the window doesn't give much of an idea of landing. The op needs to put the camera in manual mode, pull back and get the crew and adjust exposure to bring up the inside of the cockpit. At least it's in landscape.

Santos Dumont Airport at downtown Rio de Janeiro, has a few less than 1600 meters, and Boeing 707 and Airbus A320 has special brakes and pilots ad hoc for this kind of runway. And has a beautiful vision of the town, its skyscrapers and the Guanabara Bay.

History could have been very different for Chuuk. When the atomic bomb was in development the targeting committee seriously considered the island's Japanese naval base as the first target. By the time the bomb was ready the base had been largely neutralized by conventional bombing, and Chuuk was spared.
Plenty of water either end, extend the runway by 200 metres with would be much safer... no wet feet

Been there, done that on an Alaska Airlines B737-700 flying the "milk run". Shortest commercial flight from previous stop in Petersburg I've ever been on--12 minutes--then a screeching landing with full reverse thrusters on that short runway. YIKES! I laughed out loud when they announced "Welcome to Wrangell where the local time is..." Really??? What are the odds the two cities 12 minutes apart would be in different time zones?😂

When i was a pilot for NASA I flew the space shuttle called explorer I landed on 4,000 foot runway on mars twice
That was a great landing (1st trip). I was a stowaway. I could hear you guys talking about a bunch of BS about how you were not gonna bring NASA their ship back.
Methinks that this *might* be a simulator (someone has stolen the 'Space Simulator' (old reference to a loony toons cartoon, there) because the boats in the harbor have the same wake and wake lines, everything is even in regard to background, wake length changes perspective as the A/c gets closer. Landing lights are WAY too big! Just seems as though it might be a fake view -- being offered as being actually real, but only a simulator with video being shot within the cockpit behind training flight personnel. Something's off.
warrenholmes33 Looks to me very real. Look e.g. at that faint bird flying right across the airfield starting at 2:38 from behind that 5 sign to the left. Just ordinary hot day on a Pacific island.
By the looks of the runway the pilots have had the brakes on before the wheels hit the concrete.. I wouldn't have been surprised to see arrestor cables across the runway 😮
