Celtics and Sixers had many epic battles in 80's, this game sure had the feel of a playoff atmosphere in January. NBA in the 80's was at it's best ever. As a Celtic fan I'm partial to Eastern Division. If Philly would have gotten Barkley a few years earlier, oh man! Dr. J I admired beginning in his ABA days, he was a monster in open court, covered more court in one step than anyone. Guess I'm just an old schooler. Great players, unforgettable memories.
You could see Julius on the decline. Considering he retired two years later, you never want to see one of the all-time greats start to lose it. Julius was my idol as a kid before Magic came into the league, and it was amazing to see the effort and will Barkley was exerting in just his second year. Len Bias. What a phenom. Red Auerbach was salivating over this guy. They all were excited to have him on their team. Coke was so supposed to be harmless drug. Wasted life and career.
You forget how great of a player Barkley was. He was only 6'6", a size more akin to guards, and yet, he rebounded better than most forwards and centers. Also, that 76ers team was loaded with Barkley, Erving, Malone and Cheeks. That Boston team was historically great of course, and Bill Walton was pretty amazing too, but injuries sidelined him more often than not. Also, this was the same day the Patriots lost to the Bears in the Super Bowl (as the announcer hinted at, calling it a "big sports day" in Boston).

This clip serves as a reminder of just how super good Charles Barkley was. A forward at only 6'6", he played like he was 6'10". And Julius, well, he's Julius. The Celtics, even without McHale sure had their hands full with that well coached Sixers team.
6' 6" is a bit of a stretch.
6'5" is more like it.
An absolute monster on the court, incredible player.
damn i wanna see that whole friggin game now:)
That was Grind it Out Tooth n Nail, both Team's Giving Thier All with Excellent Sportsmanship Shown by Both Team's and All Thier Player's. Thank You.
Wow amazed at the Star Power here alone... Bird, Walton, McHale, Parrish, D.J., Dr. J Maurice Cheeks, Sir Charles, Moses Malone.
And, my friend, they stuck around. No "where is Doc, Bird, McHale, Toney going next year." I know things have changed, but nice to see SOME stability.
Could you imagine Bird calling Dr.J, Magic and Kareem, John Stockton and saying let's have a team..
Best Celtics team ever!!
Enough said!!
Bill Walton had just one good yr w Boston but when he delivered Boston was dominant
Indeed. I wish we could've had at least 75% of this Bill Walton in 87 along with a healthy Wedman and an alive Len Bias. Would've beaten the Lakers in 7 in 87.
He really looked a little like he did in Portland. Nice offensive moves with the running hook and turn around bank shot, as well as good defense. Boston's frontcourt was loaded: Parish, Walton, McHale, Bird
@@GOPMAN71 I think Birds back and wear and tear started affecting him and the big men started to age...
He won with portland too, how many different teams did Mj win with? Hard to get by goat Kareem
@@GOPMAN71 I also think if McHale and Parrish had been healthy that the Celtics would have won in 87.
It was games like this by Barkley that convinced me to put him on my all-time basketball team with Walton, Bird, Jordan, and Magic.
Barkley, at his best, was a freaking beast. He was maybe 6'5, and one of the three best rebounders of all time.
Walton? Seriously?
Only 1977 or 1986 Walton
@@budlite8 In his all too short prime, yes. Bill could play with anyone. Yes, including Magic and Larry.
@@TexasPsychoK He sure was of his time. Without a doubt.
I forgot what a beast Barkley was. What a handful! He would destroy many of the players today, and he was only 6-4!
Can you imagine if Bird played today with the 3 point shot. 40 points a night. Enough said.
Fun basketball to watch. The Celtics were loaded with one of the best teams to ever play, and the 76ers with Dr. J, Malone, and a young Barkley were able to give Boston all they could handle.
Man I used to love these old intros for CBS and then NBC. They made these games even more exciting . ABC/ESPN presentations suck.
Basketball used to be so exciting.
So many future Hall of Fame Players in this game!!
Very awesome game and plays in this one.
Barkley was a beast at 6ft 4 or so. Forget sometimes how good he was
I miss real basketball
+Joe Cap This was real competition, real defenses.. and the best team ever
I do too
@Mike Johnson It is tough, I'll say. Just to watch 3 pt launchers and high jumpers going for alley oops.
6:11 Knew that was going in before he released it!!
Im gr 5, 6 in 86. Remember this era of NBA handbook. In the Philippines, we had Hackett and Bates and the promising trio of Samboy, Allan and Cebu sensation, Dondon Ampalayo. Asian games golden bronze introduce NCAA MvP Alvin Patrimonio battling the likes of Korean legend, Lee Chung Hee. Anyone from Philippines?!
Billy Ray Bates- Black Superman of the PBA
While I hated Boston as a city, you couldn't NOT respect Larry Bird and the team game the Celtics played especially in 1986, a lot of people and writers thought was one of the best teams in NBA history.
What a great game to watch.
Love dr.j he drove people to aba and NBA area in the 1970s love his airwalk, moonwalk towards the basket, he love to palm the basketball while dribbling, bank his jump shots
at only 6'5, Barkley was an absolute animal at this age. He blocked Walton's shot, over-powered Bird and Walton for putbacks, and even showed a great drive and spin move with a lefty finish. If he had been 6'8, he would have been the most dominant player of any era.
Wonderful video!!! There are six Hall of Famers on the court here!!! (and McHale watching from the sideline).
Just incredible.
As a lifelong sixers fan I always dreaded playing the Celtics especially in the Boston garden!!!!
86 celtics were the best team ever assembled in my opinion
Love watching these old highlights. Barkley at 2:47 :)
I love Walton!
Master defender, rebounder outlet passer, scorer, etc etc
this game chokes me up...how unbelievably good was that '86 Celtics team??? Good lord...and just think if that lineup had a few years to really gel together, and just imagine a healthy Bill Walton for a full career....or even 6-7 consecutive years! Can you imagine? DJ, Ainge, Bird, Parrish, Bird, Walton, McHale....good grief.. What a GREAT time for pro basketball!
You're exactly right. Barkley at 6'6" played like he was 6'10". What a strong guy he was!
True. But he was also built like D or O lineman. Not like most b ball players. Wide, but relatively short.
My high school basketball coach said he was "eye to eye" with Charles Barkley: He is 6'4 1/2"
@@NameCallingIsWeak you are 💯% Correct!
Sir Charles was not 6'-6", as some of the comments have suggested...
Sir Charles is still the shortest man to ever win an NBA rebounding title. Strength, tenacity, quickness, tremendous hops.
3:26 "Playing Larry Bird is like playing a Computer" - Tommy Heinsohn
Glad I saw the best stretch of NBA ever. This through '98.
This takes my breath away.
Only in slow motion can you even see Bird catching those touch passes.
Bird....doing "curry" shots before curry's mom and dad even dated...
Nath Anter should be called “bird” shots
7:32 - wow
Dell Curry graduated from VA Tech in 86, they met in college.
Larry Bird was just AWESOME
86 Celtics is the best team ever!
Larry bird was unreal in this game at that year...86 celtics was one of the top 3 teams of all time if not best but barkely game was a beast especially for his height!
@Butch Sprout I love the 86 team the only team I would give a strong chance against them is the 67 sixers and thats cause of Chamberlain Supreme dominance and the scoring ability of his supporting cast...that would be a match-up i would be willing to pay front row seats to see!!!
