I heard this last night on Classic FM at 2am in the morning while driving on a dark country road. It was absolutely beautiful.
Mum chose this herself for her funeral years ago. We honoured her wishes last year and knew she would have loved it. It's the most sublime piece of music I have ever heard.

this is actually my favorite music in the entire opera. it really moves me.
Mine too. I never particularly liked the opera and, to be fair, it is pretty hard to stage many sopranos as a 15 year-old geisha. I think Suzuki is my favourite character, as she seems to be the only one that realizes what is going on, but is also bearing the emotional brunt in her loyalty to Cio-cio San. This chorus cuts through everything I have ever heard by Puccini, though La Fanciulla del West is my favourite opera of his.
Possibly one of the most perfect pieces of music ever.
played this at my dads funeral as we went into the chapel. He loved his opera's. every time i hear this it reminds me of my dad who i miss dearly
We played this half way through my sons funeral so that his friends could think of him for a moment, he was 48
We played this too at my Mums funeral as we walked her out...the length of the aisle was the length of the music...everyone was crying...it was truly fitting for such a lovely woman...x

The one time I had the fortune to see this opera on stage, the choir came out onto the balcony I was sitting, behind us, and I didn't notice they were there till halfway through. And it was practically angelic as they started singing. Magical music.
If music is said to be universal, this unspoken chorus is the summit of how it can reach the heart from any human being

It's the only opera I've seen live. Years ago in Houston. It was absolutely wonderful. I'll never forget. Hope you see it.
I attended last weekend in Dublin. Moved me to tears , I'm a 47 year old construction worker. The guys at work take the piss because I take my daughters to the ballet and opera as I enjoy it myself but its them who are missing out.
"Humming Chorus" always makes me remember when I used to sing llulabies to my babies and my little brothers and sister. This chorus in particular moves me deeply because I know the story of Madame Butterfly. I solidarize with all abandoned women.
Several people have noted that "Bring Him Home" (appropriately also a night-time vigil) clearly quotes this chorus, but I've not heard anyone else remark on the similarity between the opening phrase and the opening of Schubert's Piano Sonata in B-flat major, D. 960 (same key as this). I've always found that sonata to be extraordinary for just how heart-rending it makes B-flat major sound, so I'm not surprised Puccini drew from it to create one of his most moving compositions.

Thanks for uploading this version. It was used in "Heavenly Creatures" and other versions just don't have the same haunting impact.

Extraordinaire! This has got to be one of the most beautiful moments in an opera. Magnificent!
I often travel from Australia to Europe via Japan, with a few days in Tokyo on the return journey. Every time, in the departure lounge at Narita, I experience an overpowering nostalgia and sadness at leaving this first foreign country in which I spent any length of time. I have been known to weep in public. This chorus produces the very same effect. I love it!

Beautiful melody and does something special within the opera. Still, I like it even better transformed into the song Dormi by Albano Carissi, because that is the version I have been listening to since childhood and I have loved the melody since (we had a CD with that song at home). When I finally went to see this opera one year at the university and heard this for the first time, that was a really strange experience. I had no idea where I knew the melody from :D Connecting this with the rather explosive singing in Dormi was definitely not the first thing that came to mind.
As an Italian, I can say Al Bano is well-known abroad (also in Italy, but we know him as a peculiar character… and his music is definitely not the best Italy's music…), despite his big lack in sophistication; he likes to be loud. I'm glad you discovered and enjoyed the original one.
@@giovannimoriggi5833 Yeah, agreed, "he likes to be loud" is a pretty accurate comment. I do not know that many of his songs, but he does seem to enjoy singing his lungs out in many of them. Anyway, that one CD where he sang classical tunes with lyrics got me to appreciate those melodies long before I got into classical music as a whole, so I owe him big thanks for that at least 😀 I enjoy those songs to this day, even though his singing technique or voice is not the best out there.
Yes, if nothing else he makes the effort to celebrate classical pieces. He stands out because he sings in the register of pop music, he's very good at it, I cannot mention Italian artists who do not take what they do seriously (at least, among those who have been successful in Italy first), but I felt the need to comment because he is one of the artists who's famous abroad, but whose quality is overrated in comparison to what is the real Italian level. In his original repertoire he has signature songs that are very beautiful as well as very famous, but I never liked his character! @@roose468

The title song to the musical " Paint Your Wagon " was lifted straight out of Act 1 of Puccini's ' Tosca '.
