  • In this short video we show how we lasso a mooring buoy when a pick up line isn't available.
Being a short handed crew we often find ourselves using the lassoing method to pick up a mooring buoy before we secure our main lines using a Moor Fast boat hook and remove the lasso from the buoy.

Haha, thank you for your concern! To be honest 99% of the time my hair is tied back otherwise it would just end up hitting me in the face before eventually knotting up 🤣 On this occasion we literally motored about 30 minutes across the harbour so no sails used, but agree...it is a safety issue that people with long hair should be aware of. Thanks for your comment!

It's a Moor Fast boat hook, not sure if they still make them though. However there are other alternatives out there such as the Buoy Catcher which looks very good

Holly crap how fast is this helms person moving? Maybe for demonstration purposes. Although good job on the lasso and technique to catch it. I guess I would try to be mindful mooring does rub off paint on hull. What I would do is do the lasso technique as we approach mooring upwind or up current and lasso it let the rope harden in front of the bow and then use that hook technique so the ball does not rub off the paint. Although it me a little more tricky getting it off the bow vs beam. Nevertheless good technique to use with the lasso. 👍

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. Fortunately we've been lucky enough never to have any paint rub off on the hull. Like you say we do approach into either wind or current but usually the forward motion of the boat means we normally end up with the mooring buoy slightly aft of the bow, or in this case nearly at the beam! :) However it does allow us to get the 'moor fast' line onto it quickly - we've found that if the boat falls back before we get this attached it can be pretty difficult to use the 'moor fast' as it's not long enough to reach down to the buoys at a distance, and to be honest the 'moor fast' can be tricky enough to use at the best of times! But it's a technique that we've found works well for us. And we did have to speed the video up a little - would have been a slow one otherwise 🤣
