Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest was my first intro into the Castlevania universe and I loved it. I beat it again about a year ago through the Anniversary Collection and with the help of online maps. While I loved the other Castlevania games with linear level designs, this one always has a special place in my heart. I think that's why I loved Symphony Of The Night so much too because of the Metroidvania style game play. I love that this one improves on the classic game but has similar visuals and enemies from SOTN and Rondo Of Blood. I'm definitely looking forward to playing this tonight!
I remember when i was about 8 years old, my brother had a friend who stayed over and would bring his NES with him. This is one of the games i remember us staying up late playing, and joking about certain things in the game. It made me afraid to be out in the yard at night because i kept thinking about hands coming up from the ground and grabbing my leg. Of course, i was also staying up late watching Tales From the Crypt and Monsters. The 80s were very memorable to grow up in, like i remember trying my best to get through metal gear. Hating the water level in TMNT. Kids these days don't understand what nostalgia really is.
This was my first Castlevania, too! Confused the hell out of me as a kid. I did the tornado warp once by accident and I've still memories of how I reacted to it.
Just FYI, before fighting Frankenstein in the 3rd mansion, go to town to the far west and get the Morningstar. If you don't and you just use the chain whip, you will likely die many times. I almost quit playing because I was so frustrated. Now am playing through the game again and I can confirm that using the Morningstar makes him way easier. Every other boss in the game is manageable but him unless you have the Morningstar.
Me too my parents bought us Simon's Quest for nes without us playing the first game and I loved it. The atmosphere and exploration. I didn't have Zelda so that was my Zelda. Luckily I had some Nintendo guidebooks that showed how to beat some of those weird puzzles.

This looks great. I love how it got its inspiration from SOTN and it looks like it’ll be lots of fun like Castlevania 2: Simons Quest Revamped which played like the NES Simons Quest
This has already been done with a game called Castlevania Revamped. It is a super nintendo style simon's quest that is actually good. I'd recommend trying it out, it's on pc and has been around for 10 years.
Just looked up Revamped. It looks and sounds a million times better than this imo. Renting Simon's Quest and hearing the town music on the NES for the first time is a fond memory, even if I sucked at the game. The music in this remake is a real turn off for me.
this game looks great. never liked castlevania as a kid but once I played the one on PS1 a couple years ago I got hooked. And this looks like a masterpiece.
Simons quest is the castlevania i started with. Bought it for $12 at a garage sale back in the early 90s, and I still have it. Obviously I know it's a black sheep, but I don't regret it. Playing this remake, I instantly needed to remap my keys, cuz I can't stand using the keyboard arrows to move.
In the original game hearts were only currency. You had unlimited ammo. Experience was also important in the original game, which was not obvious at first.
Well, you sold me on at least the boss fights. That was what always miffed me on Simon's Quest. They just felt so slower or too easy in the game compared to the other Castlevania games. Heck, save for Dracula you could avoid them.
There is new dlc on a game called Dead Cells coming it is a Castlevania map and official looks very good and the closest to a Castlevania sequel we will get at the mo. Thanks for your video.
Apparently this remake either ironically made a similar mistake, or is intentionally referencing the original because at 4:18 it says "You now PROCESS Dracula's Rib."
It would be so cool to have the nes games remade into today's technology with some new stuff added. Fester's Quest or Monster Party would be awesome if it was remade to name a couple.
This and Lecarde Chronicles 2 are the closest games we have right now to Castlevania games that could be considered streamlined (were they not made by fans, anyways) since konami isn't doing anything major with the title right now, save for allowing Simon and Richter to be in Smash Ultimate.
People like to complain about it’s difficulty but seem to forget all games of that era needed strategy guides to complete and lacked tools to tell you where to go. They were slow too with unforgiving restart mechanics so discovering for yourself was often the difficult and time consuming part. Games today move faster, are forgiving in failure and generally help you where to go, but also have way more content to experience.
There's a lot of great hacks to improve gameplay at RHDN. I have an in game map, retranslation, enhanced controls, marked Breakables, half penalty on on continue (normally you lose all hearts, not it's half)
Is sad that my favorite franchise is basically dead.if this was for console I will have bought it asap. Also I want a SOTN remake with the graphics of mirror of shadows or better and instead of a inverted castle, know the castle is alive and all the background change to a more sinister atmosphere. I think the inverted castle was pure laziness 🤷🏽♂️ and more dialog and cut scenes. I have beat that game like 100 times.
I’m all for updating this classic, but not at the expense of everything that made it so unique. The lying and ambiguous NPC’s are part of what made the original so odd and haunting imo. There are actually very few things I’d change about the original. Even some of the graphic updates I’ve seen make the towns look way too crisp rather than dingy as you would expect towns in a cursed countryside to be. Skeleton instantly turning while attacking me, its ridiculous..." it makes boss unecessary hard...
@@hyperboreen4854 Not counting the one in the video (haven't played that one yet), the best one I've played so far is Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest Revamped.
If you know what to do or have a guide your reading then it’s actually one of the easier castlevania games. I beat it on NES using a guide from gamefaqs. I had a lot of fun with this game. I really liked it. I love the sound effects and the music is really good. I appreciate what nintendo was trying to do here and with Zelda 2, not making the same game twice. This version looks great. I would love to play it.
This is the third remake of this game I have seen and although not the weakest of them, it is only okay to me. There are a few issues I found too that you didn't mention like randomly while you're walking up stairs, Simon will jump at the top of them. A lot of the different features they have in the game I think they also took from other creators. Simon's Quest Rebitten had bosses at the end of each dungeon as well as money instead of hearts being used for everything. It also had smoother animation. And another fan game included a map as well. I have played a lot of different rom hacks and even fan remakes of this game, and as I said, though it isn't the best imo, it is far from the worst. If they were to fix the walking cycle on the stairs as well as in general, I think I would enjoy it more. Simon's torso looks like a static image and it looks like his arms slide along the sides which I find hard to ignore personally. I know I'm nit picking but it's just something that bothers me. I have to say the music in the game is great though. I don't care for how different some of it sounds from the original but I find myself rocking out to it while I play. It is definitely worth playing though! Especially since it's free. I wouldn't pay money for this though.
I don't like the new additions (other than the map). The bosses, the slide, etc. It always bugs me when someone has the ability to just do a straight remake, keeping the feel intact while only adding quality of life and visual enhancements, but decides to throw in extra stuff that changes how the game plays or unfolds. All the same this does look like a solid game on its own, and Castlevania II IS one of my favorites, so I'll still give it a go. Thanks for the video, I hadn't heard of this before.
I just started playing this myself. It's a huge improvement over the original, and honestly one of the best Castlevania games I've played in awhile. As mention in this video it's a little buggy, but it's still a great fan made game. Hopefully Konami doesn't go after this and take it down. If anything I hope Konami see's the TLC that went into this and supports the game. Maybe even backs a future version with some money.
I have always loved this game since I first played it in 1989. THere was NEVER a bad thing said about this game until a certain RUclips nerd said it was bad. This game is not perfect, but I will bet most people never played this game back then to get the true effect or a real opinion. Fanboys will be fanboys...
This is more than a remake it's a completely different game and it's for the best. Castlevania II was a mess and simply not fun this looks very entertaining. Great game and for free! Good review and cool video Ron!👉😃👈
This looks great. Is the music Remixes of the original? Boss fights sound like the most exciting upgrade. I've seen rom hacks that fix the misleading hints from villagers and stuff like that.
Makes me wonder about reaction of Konami. Is there going to be takedown like Nintendo did with am2r or not? If the project is good it deserves official release not cancellation 😉
I like the game but it kills me that I cant remap the keys.. Controller support with my switch pro controller is non existent and the only scheme for keyboard is atrocious. Where is the configuration file? Where can I change the layout of keyboard? Where is the save file even?
The whip needs to have the 360° ability like Super Castlevania IV. Ever since then not have full control of my whip like that is extremely irritating. This was my favorite Castlevania when it came out originally. This game looks great. I'm glad it finally got some remake love.

I've already lost track in how many Castlevania 2 remakes I've played through. Time for yet another one
Which are the best?
@@hyperboreen4854 Not counting the one in the video (haven't played that one yet), the best one I've played so far is Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest Revamped.
@@NukeA6 Thank you, already downloaded the other day!
Look pretty cool Castlevania 2 Revamp on PC is pretty good as well.
Oh, this is definitely going on my steam deck
Bro I love Castlevania and I love Rammstein too (nice cap 🤜🤛) , and I got some of both i'm this video, thanks duuude 🤘🤘🤘
This looks amazingly good 👍
Well next be needing the SOTN remaster we never truly got ! haha
That is coming in the form of SOTN Hacked.
Maybe... but Dead Cells is a good game too
This looks great! You didn’t mention the soundtrack or let us hear it tho! Sounds like it’s a pretty rad remix maybe.
Where can I play this gsme
I have always loved this game since I first played it in 1989. THere was NEVER a bad thing said about this game until a certain RUclips nerd said it was bad. This game is not perfect, but I will bet most people never played this game back then to get the true effect or a real opinion. Fanboys will be fanboys...
so how do you get this game? none of the provided links seem to be the link for THIS game
great video, have it running on my steam deck!!
The remake by retrogamer3 was pretty good.
Looks great! Ima check it out. 👍
That shoulder movement on simons sprite… I wish that was a little tighter, it loses me, but the rest is great.
I saw some Demon's Crest background elements in there.
Just played it and it is great, there are rooms for improvement but i am happy about it and the best thing is it is free!
Looks awesome man
Ahem....4:22 "You now Process Dracula's Rib".....Process.
C'mon man, you've had over 30 years to avoid that mistake again.
Lol I think it was left in on purpose.
@@Madlittlepixel intentional for sure haha
For me is a collection of Sotn and Order of Eclesia sprites.
4:17 "Process? Process?!"

The timing of this is absolutely perfect. I've been on a huge "Metroidvania with Towns" kick lately (Phoenotopia, Infernax, etc.)
They need to add stair walking animations period. There are none and it makes it look tacky without them.
This is more than a remake it's a completely different game and it's for the best. Castlevania II was a mess and simply not fun this looks very entertaining. Great game and for free! Good review and cool video Ron!👉😃👈
Are you kidding? Simon's Quest was the best Castlevania up until Symphony of The Night and the 2nd best overall.
@@jd9119 😂
This looks great. Is the music Remixes of the original? Boss fights sound like the most exciting upgrade. I've seen rom hacks that fix the misleading hints from villagers and stuff like that.
This looks great, I will have to try it out.
Makes me wonder about reaction of Konami. Is there going to be takedown like Nintendo did with am2r or not? If the project is good it deserves official release not cancellation 😉
Nope. Lecarde Chronicles 2 even hired the original voice actor for Alucard and they never touched it.
When Konami drops the ball, the fans pick it up.
It’s was definitely crack rock cocaine when it came out!!! Castlevania II FTW 🙌
Seems like they would have fixed the translation and typos if they were going this far with it. Here is the first example I saw. 4:19
