Loved the video!💕 Just started my comic book collection and found Toon Haven. They offer a huge variety of digital comics for every genre, and lifetime updates too!😍

I am buying Golden Age slabs(non-keys, not very valuable) if the price is the same as it cost the seller to have it graded. I figure, why not? They're affordable and they look good on a shelf

@@Mr.Digit115 I totally agree with that. I prefer being able to flip through a comic as well. My only caveat is a book that is so fragile that it serves a better purpose as decoration. Thanks for the reply, cheers.

I remember when you first started down the grade path... You were getting back comics grade mid 8 to lower 9, and those comics you probably going to have around for forever

One thought: if you are going to buy one of these consistent keys, I would tend toward a slabbed book just for preservation and reliability sake. Spending $50 on a comic you like is one thing but if you are going to spend $500 or more... you would want that slab assurance.

Hi Jim good analysis - however I think the arrival of WhatNot in the past few years means that graded comics are being sold and not recorded. The first black suit for instance I have seen graded copies sell regularly on Whatnot.

Probably, but the days of buying anything less than a 9.4 on copper and newer are done

I dont necessarily agree, I bought a CGC 9.4 of Batgirl adventures #1 in a newsstand. Finding that in graded newsstand is very difficult, it was definitely better to get that slab over a raw.

Another RUclipsr stated that the myth of grading comics is that they always sell. He says only about half of what he gets graded actually sells. I have noticed the graded comics on your ebay page that never sell. Selling raw books probably has a lot more liquidity.

  • @jabezcreed

I would suspect a large percentage of slabbed sales have always been dealers buying nice copies of raw books and moving them online or at shows. I think we have to wait another 20 to 30 years for today's collectors to downsize before we start to see massive numbers of second and third owner slab sales in the marketplace. And even then, wouldn't you resubmit a 2020 CGC model slab for the brand new 2050 model slab at that point? Mint Hunter just did a recent video about how he realized the cost of slabbing random comic stock didn't equate to more return on investment. In fact it resulted in a slower turnover of his inventory. Just because you can slab a run filler for 40 bucks does not mean the market wants a 45 dollar run filler book. These sales are probably in the basement compared to 2022.

  • @JediFarce

I still will if it makes more sense to buy a slab over a raw. As an example, i recenty purchased a $450 CGC 9.6 Black widow #1 the movie variant with Scarlett Johansson in a spider-man pose. With raws selling for $750 to $450, on ebay, a May 18 raw that sold for $300. Buying a 9.6 slab is a no brainer.
As an aside, I also purchased the Ultimate fallout 4 facsimile acetate cover, a CGC 9.9 blue label. Although it cost a lot more than the raw, it was a better spec book.

I haver NEVER sent any comics for grading. I prefer to use the money saved to buy more comics. I am old and on Social security. I have my high value comics encased in the rigid plastic holders. They are protected, but I can still access them when I want to. Even from UV light. I Personally inspect every comic I buy.

Great video Jim, I really liked your breakdown on the spreadsheet. There’s a lot of food for thought here, and I’ve been wondering how often “never slabbers” are buying graded books and cracking them out. I hope you expand on this a little more, and it’d be cool to see an end of year video to see how close the 2024 estimates land.

Not much i can tell you that.. CGC has been shady to me from its inception and i get protecting and preserving key and older books..but 90% of books i see do not deserve to be graded imo and for a long time that was the best excuse to get a graded book over keeping it raw, but there's options for protecting them.

Also why is that spawn #1 graded.
The real deal #1s have the upc on the cover.
Truth be told mine isn’t even though I got it in94, because in 92 when it dropped I was like here’s a dud, and initially didn’t like it.
Not much now but two years in and just before the time the HBO series came out I was a huge fan.
    Now, not so much.

High grade raws sell for about $20, CGC 9.8s for about $150. Even with $25ish in grading fees, that’s a solid increase in value.

The bigger the key the greater the chance your average buyer will want it slabbed. Unless you are very good at spotting restoration, triming etc the risk of buying big keys raw is too great.

Now add trying to spot those things on a busy con floor where you only really have a few moment with sellers or Ebay where you're at the mercy of the pictures given by a self motivated seller... Under those circumstances I think even buying mid leave-high value keys can be a pretty big gamble even from trusted sellers. The upside of trusted sellers though, is most of them will go out of their way to make things right!

Yeah man, I guess if you cherry pick the books and set limited variables to judge by then you can draw whatever conclusions you want.
Personally, I'd rather judge off of popular sentiment by retailers and flippers who are actually moving graded and raw books to know what's moving and what's not. Seems about as accurate as reaching a conclusion like this.

I’m only submitting books $500+ for grading now. I just don’t see much reason if worth less unless it’s a hot key and I’m going to flip it. I’ve seen the price of sub 9.0 fillers drop like a rock. People are getting good deals on such books but why buy them unless you can CPR for something over 9.0.

CGC opening up 9.9 prescreens and signature grading is an obvious sign that their cash cow is sunsetting. I hope they banked that influx of coin from the past 3 years because it’s going to get pretty lean very soon.

i think people are buying more raw again bc of price,....i know i do.
selfishly, i do like to be able to read the story and enjoy the art, too, that is what comics are made for huh...
i also think people are buying slabs as well,....esp. for keys in high grade.
did i miss something or does your video have no raw sales data to use?
i understand the need for slabbing if you have a legit rare/valuable book, no prob.,...
what i dont understand is someone buying a book already slabbed and youve never even read it,....but brag abt it being the 1st app of whoever.....
but theres room for all in the comic book universe......
also back in the preslab days, dealers and customers argued about condition more, but today that has changed with newer standards alot, but theres that when buying raw,...some are also weird about taking the book out for examination, sometimes rightfully so, but theres no way to check for detached staples or married /loose centerfolds, or even checking the pg count...w/out it.
so both are valid ways to buy comics, w positives and negatives, maybe theyre buying more of both?
