I met Liz Holzman, who was the animator for Pinky and the Brain. I met her randomly at a Saturday market. I was just sitting at a table, enjoying a crepe, and she decides to sit next to me out of the many empty chairs. I didn't know who she was at first, but we chatted and made the usual small talk. I told her what I do for a living, and asked her in turn. "I'm an animator." She said. "Okay, anything I've ever heard of?" I asked, in between bites of crepe. "Ever heard of Pinky and the Brain?" I slapped the table, startling her a little, and shouted, "Shut up!" Of course it was one of my favorite cartoons growing up, so I quickly turned into a fan boy. After our chance encounter she ended up meeting with some reporters, but wow! She was sweet, and humble. She even autographed a doodle for me on an envelope. She passed away either that year or the year following. Really, she was quite extraordinary.
The theme song goes 'One is a genius, the other is insane!' Usually you describe people in the order that you said them, aka: Kathy and Peter broke up- one's heartbroken, the other's relieved. Guess who was who? Apply this same logic to the theme song and.. Pinky is the genius- if not only for the fact he does actually appear to be smarter, but for the fact he doesn't want to take over the world every night.

this theory is so plausible that it occurred to me as a kid after watching the episode where Pinky becomes president. my theory back then was: Brain is actually dumb because the humans, that are shown to be "dumb" in the series, are actually the smart ones and since Pinky acts just like the humans do, he is the smart one of them.
There is a flaw with the second episode observation. The reason brain's writing was sloppy was because he was writing with levers. Imagine trying to write your name with a car. Also, the question pinky knew but brain didn't was for a tv show. So there is a hole to the theory.

I've been on board with this theory since I saw the Cracked video about the ACME universe. I honestly really don't understand why it only got a 4 considering how much this theory holds up, I honestly can't find any holes in this theory at all. They're genetically modified rodents and B.R.A.I.N was one of the program's failures (like the Animaniacs,) so they had to make Pinky to keep him under control. B.R.A.I.N isn't incompetent, but he is insane, and Pinky is a genius, but doesn't share B.R.A.I.N's narcissism, and since he was created by ACME Labs to keep B.R.A.I.N under control, he has no desire to take over the world or boast his intelligence, because he simply wasn't created that way. I reeeally don't understand why this theory didn't get a 5.

The genius is always the one that everyone else thinks is stupid. Most people are programmed to look at things in the exact same way. They are governed by popular opinion. The genius knows different. He looks past the propaganda and sees the truth. He realizes you have no control over the world.
Scientifically speaking we really have no definition for genius beyond having a certain iq. A lot of scientists even say that IQ tests and thus there scores aren't an entire accurate measure of intelligence they more measure how fast you can process information. In my view I believe genuis is something you do not something you are or have.

I actually think this has a wonderful message concerning intelligence and what it really means. Is intelligence being able to spout out formula's and expect to be right all the time like the Brain, or is intelligence really an eagerness to make observations about the world around you, never letting your ego get in the way and always able to consider what others think much like Pinky? As Socrates said, "I am the wisest man in the world because I know that I know nothing."
Pinky definitely displays much higher emotional and social intelligence. Pinky seems to genuinely like Brain despite his character flaws and often states taht his friendship with Brain is more important than goals Brain is persueing. Pinky, like the audience enjoys the status quo. He likes hanging out with his friend everyday. While I don't think he actively sabotages Brains work in order to maintain this, it does seem like he will follow a flawed plan through purely for Brains sake. Brain definitely believes he is intelligent, and has a large ego, but often overlooks details and won't take imput from others. While these are traits we associate with the reclusive genius, they are also displayed in sociopaths and has become a stereotype of 'neckbeards' especially those who have nothing to back up their claims of enlightment but social isolation has caused them to believe they are above the 'cattle/sheeple' who are more conventionally successfull than them in real life.
I was watching Animaniacs (The show that made "Pinky and the Brain" before it got it's spin-off series) and it was a Pinky and the Brain episode. I was listening to "One is a genius, the other is insane," and thought, "Hmm.. The Brain DEFINITELY is insane, so that means Pinky is a genius." I definitely believe this theory.
Personally I think Brain's arrogance is his downfall because when you get arrogant you get over-confident and think you are always going to win and as a result you are so wrapped up in yourself that you become sloppy and that sloppiness becomes your fatal weakness and you end up failing as a result.

Brain certainly has better deduction skills seeing as he is the one that always formulates the plan with pinky only supplementing it with minor changes. The theory is flawed in that just because Brains plans ultimately fail it does not necessarily make him the dim wit - in addition to that in several episodes it becomes apparent that pinky is not competent with all the plans that brain formulates to the pre supposition that pinky always makes an observation of a flaw in brains plans is fallacious. And why the theory in and of itself is but a theory. As for Pinkys name preceding brains, well it sounds better.
I think in the theme song it says "One is a genious, the other's insane". I've never seen much of this show, but from what I know about Pinky, I wouldn't call him "insane". Also, Pinky's name is mentioned in the title and the theme song always first.
Another point to make is that 'insanity' can be dictated through one trait. Trying the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Sure, each episode Brain's plans are different, but the concept is exactly the same, as you had said in the video. Every episode ever has the same premise, which means Brain keeps trying the same thing but fails every time.

Even something as simple as working out disproves that: you lift the same weight again and again, expecting different results, and eventually you do get them. More examples include practicing ANY ACTIVITY, with the intention of becoming better at it (not including obvious things like trying again and again to gain telekinesis).

Repeating the same technique of lifting weights won't impact the rest of your body and is the whole point I'm making, because trying to lift weights and expecting your legs to become stronger is a sign of insanity! This is my favourite edition. It could be that Pinky simply acts stupid, or is some kind of savant that allows him to see the problem's with Brain's plans but can't express them coherently. Maybe he's trying to coax him away from world domination, so that they can live a life better suited for them.
I like the theory that they're both geniuses in their own right, but Brain is the only one commonly recognized as one because being gifted in logic and science is typically put on a higher pedestal than social and emotional intelligence (something pinky seems to excel at). Just because Brain makes mistakes occasionally does not make him not a genius. He can build a robot suit and he’s a mouse. I’m pretty sure that’s enough proof to his intelligence. Being a genius doesn’t mean you know everything. The theme song suggests that only ONE is the genius. Brain might be a narcissist, but I’d still bet that he’s the genius.
The problem isn't that Pinky's the genius, and Brain's the idiot. It's that Brain is too self-absorbed to recognize obvious flaws in plans that he perceives as perfect simply because he devised them. The greatest flaw in any good plan is usually the most obvious one, but that's also what makes it the hardest to spot except by outside perspectives.
Whatever it is worth, the episode when Brain loses on the TV show is actually making a parody of an episode of the HoneyMooners (which was more or else the show Pinky was watching in the beginning of the episode). Ralph (from the HoneyMooners) was entered in some game show or something(I have not seen it, but my father told me about it)and had to guess the name to a tune. While practicing for the show his friend Norton would play different songs for him but before each song he'd play an intro jingle which irritated Ralph and made him lash out at him. In the end, the tune that would have won the entire game was the same intro tune that Norton kept playing. Like I said, this episode makes fun of the HoneyMooners.
From the Pinky POV episode, we learn he's not crazy, he just has attention deficit disorder. The origin episode shows the scientists who genetically modified them saw Pinky as the success and Brain as the failure. Brain usually fails because his temper gets the better of him, and he self-sabotages himself in order to hurt Pinky (telling the subliminally hypnotized audience at the Grand Ol' Opry to forget about him while screaming at Pinky, tearing up the foreign aid check the US gov't gave him b/c Pinky used it for origami), or because he doesn't know something obvious (ie, Gold in Ft Knox is too heavy for mice to carry). Meanwhile, every time Pinky is given a shot, he successfully takes over the world, including in the Animaniacs series finale.
He's not _stupid_, but just *_insane_*. After all, he's a narcissist who wans to rule over the entire world... There is no doubt that Brain was intelligent, but also too incompetent and up his own ass to truly be as rigorous in mind as Pinky can be. Basically, Brain can not see when he is wrong nor wants to accept when he is due to his over inflated ego. Pinky being more mentally rigorous, open-minded and with better foresight allows Pinky to better identify where Brain goes wrong.
Pinky really being the smart one is kinda the running gag of the show. Brain basically makes Rube-Goldberg machines to do very simple tasks that Pinky could've done more easily.

I did not verify this and it has been so long I can't remember but I think in the show's intro it actually shows Pinky when the song says "one is a genius, and Brain when it says "the other's insane". May be worth looking into.
Pinky isn't hiding his intelligence, it's just being ignored by Brain because of his upbeat personality. If anything it also highlights the stereotype of fun loving people being stupid and the more serious people being intelligent.
I think there are sufficient holes in this theory to warrant it only getting a 4 out of 5. The biggest hole is primarily that Brain isn't actually stupid, and is in fact a genius. This can be evidenced by his superior vocabulary and that he regularly builds robot suits. Also, in the opening credits when they say "One is a genius, the other's insane", Pinky leaps past the screen in a straight jacket. Brain's real problem isn't stupidity but hubris, a blinding pride that causes him to overlook flaws in his plan that are obvious to someone like Pinky. Now, to the theory's benefit, Pinky is probably smarter than he lets on. It may be that Pinky sees the world for how truly ridiculous it actually is, and he mirrors his personality and his priorities to match that. That may be why he's more interested in how one would get pigs to break dance than he is with taking over the world.
There is also an episode where Brain remembers a moment he wants to prove his genius but failed to do anything and just bit the scientist on the nose while Pinky was declared smart by saying NARF. The reason it happened is because Brain went into some sort of thinking tank and got locked in and went to his primal state. (So he made himself go insane) Remember it was just a tank filled with water in the darkness.. Not some super machine. The episode says they get a 2nd chance but the exact same thing happens. THis is also BRAIN's drive to takeover the world since he was unable to show his intellect and wants to take over the world to prove his intellect and to be smarter then Pinky. I do say Pinky is NOT the insane one. He is a genius in his own way. Also INSANE and GENIUS mean different on all levels. You can still be a GENIUS and INSANE or be INSANE yet have a GENIUS idea. Yes Brain's flaw is mostly in simple problems Pinky has. Showing Brain has too big of an Ego to notice things but also.... he doesn't understand BASIC social skills. When Brain did his own war of the worlds.. the whole world laughed at him seeing how bad it was and called it a comedy. This episode alone shows that despite Brain trying something.. His idea falls flat due to cheap effects and him thinking his terror works. I am saying this conspiracy is MORE likely, but I am not saying Pinky is the super genius. Brain has more intellect but lacks alot of EQ (emotional quality) ergo you could say he is autistic. While Pinky lacks alot of math skills and such. He is clearly better at standard things and thinking. Brain thinks on the wrong level of social thinking and Pinky is on the right one. Brain prefers science and math and Pinky prefers just doing what he think is best. Bla bla bla.. I can go on forever. In the end I think Brain is still the Insane one. But Pinky is the Genius since he knows how to make his ideas true. Brain makes ideas and fails... Pinky no matter how smart. Gets his job done and his ideals. You are only a GENIUS if you can make your ideas come true. That is the true nature of the idea.
When I was a kid I believed that the funny thing of the show was that Brain was not the Brain, then I thought I was wrong...but now Im pretty sure that the theory is correct. Finally one theory that is almost 100 true!! :)
I think both of them are intelligent, but that Brain is the more unstable one. As for the constant failures, a part of me believes that Brain purposely sabotages their plans. His entire goal in life is to conquer the world, if he succeeded, he'd have nothing else to do in his life, trying every night gives his life meaning, so failure is the only way to maintain that situation.

I can even see Pinky is a genius with the episode Pinky's POV. Despite it looking like random nonsense, it's Pinky's constant what ifs of the world, seeing endless possibilities. Not to mention, he does have a few profound questions every now and then.
Brain's signature on the Jeopardy podium is correct but stylized to look like it was signed by a fountain pen, with thicks and thins. The B is a profile of the human brain.
The Pinky and the Brain actually remind me of "Shutter Island" where you think the main character if trying to solve a murder in an asylum with his partner, but it turns out that the main character is insane and a patient of that asylum and his partner is actually his doctor. Maybe Pinky is the genius and is just watching the Brain and the reason he just goes along with the Brain's plans are because he knows they are going to fail. Just like the doctor/partner went along with the main character of Shutter Island.
"But what if everyone just takes off their pants?" This was one of the times Pinky was able to poke a HUGE hole in Brain's plan to take over the world. Brain would've magnetized the planet and caused everyone to get pinned down to the ground by the change in their pockets. When Pinky revealed this flaw, Brain responded: "Um... then we'll have to take over the world QUICKLY!" It was one of my favorite moments of the entire series, because it showed that Pinky wasn't dumb, and could outwit Brain, who was too egotistical to ever alter his plans.
I really can't find how any of this proves Pinky is a genius. In fact, some of these only disprove the theory even more. The Brain not writing good only proves he is basically a mouse with those tiny hands who can't hold a pen: If Pinky knew that answer and that makes him a genius, I'm sure he would of known to let a human write his name or the cover would be blown (Okay, it's a cartoon and I guess maybe mice can be on TV shows than, but than explain the point of Brain dressing as a human ?). If he can read, why doesn't he know how to keep the world after finally taking over it? Reading better than writing doesn't make you smarter. Thomas Edison for example had dyslexia. So did Lewis Carroll. But they did work as well as anyone who could read normally. Pinky reading may prove he is only smarter than we take him for. You'll have to explain the episode That Smarts about the machine. Even if I agreed on that one, maybe Brain could still be the genius and fail from listening to Pinky. I agree this is a good theory but it only sounds like the Beatles Abbey Road cover conspiracy where we see one odd thing, and we believe more. Any way, there is no way Pinky's a genius. I would argue that although The Brain's GOAL (taking over the world) remains the same, his methodology or attempts change and vary constantly. Brain never repeats an idea but always formulates a new plan. So saying that the definition of being insane by doing the same thing over and over expecting different results doesn't apply completely to The Brain! :)
My cousin told me this when I was little. I would say yes that Pinky is smart but it was a dumb move of him to hand over the world to Brain after he conquered it then Brain messes it up.

There's also an episode where Brain is talking to Pinky and has his back to him. Pinky is moving objects while waving his finger, Brain turns around and says "how are you doing that?!" Pinky says "oh it just comes and goes" all the objects fall to the floor.

I feel this should have gotten a 5 because during the opening theme song it clearly says " One is a Genius", while showing pinky, " and the other's insane" while showing brain making calculations. I'm 27 now and even as a child back then I could decipher the not so hidden truth that though he is nonchalant about a lot of things, Pinky was the smarter of the two.

The correct answer to me is most likely that they both are geniuses but with different flaws, Pinky is a genius but is crazy and seemingly ADHD, Brain is focused but extremely arrogant. Remember it's canon that the two's genes were spliced together, so it's possible that brain originally was a complete genius but pinky's genes messed with him, and pinky was just crazy, but brains genes made him subtly smart. Remember insanity isn't stupidity.

I'm surprised she didn't mention the opening theme song- "it's pinky and the brain, one is a genius, the other's insane" = pinky is the genius, brain is insane. If it were the other way around like we're lead to believe, it should list brain before pinky, or the second part should be vice versa, making it "pinky and the brain, one is insane and the other is a genius". I get that it doesn't rhyme or sound catchy at all, but that's the point--- I actually do believe this show was purposefully created in the way that it's relatively easy to see between the lines and realize the brain is actually named ironically, and pinky has the intellect.

What's boggling about this theory is how Pinky appears stupid but can do some of thing simplest things like reading and writing, but while Brain is coming up with ingenious plots he always assume its Pinky's fault and never considers what goes wrong expecting to succeed when he inevitably fails!
Just to make this clear. In that second episode of Animaniacs. Brain did spell his name right. Other wise it would be spelled or otherwise pronounced "Brian". However that was the joke that episode, saying his name wrong, even though he wrote it down correctly.
I get the idea that people equate the Brain with Gilligan or someone like him. Because the show leads you down that wide path. But if you step back, Pinky is not at fault often as memory serves. Brain blames him sometimes for things that weren't his fault. Pinky actually follows the Brain's directions for the most part. Sometimes literally. The Brain, presuming Pinky is dumb, doesn't bring him into the plan as an equal. He ignores any of Pinky's objections to the plan. He tells Pinky to do something in a demanding, paint by numbers way, Pinky carries out the instructions and the plan fails. I am curious if Pinky ever failed to carry out his directions when he was not prevented from doing so? He's not a Gilligan. As for Pinky being the genius, and the brain being insane, the video covers most of it. Other evidence is the...are you pondering statements. Perhaps Pinky sees associations other people don't see, a possible sign of genius. Also Pinky has amazing abilities, such as levitation that he only rarely uses. The argument against Pinky being a genius is his apparently lack of knowledge and mindless diversions. But you know, Pinky shows love for the Brain. Maybe Pinky pretends to be dumber than the brain as he feels that makes Brain happy.

It's not really a theory that I've really seen been pointed at as a theory, but The Walking Dead took the plot from The Toy Story films. They have almost the same exact plot, and it's pretty freaky. Seasons 3-5 of TWD aren't that similar, but maybe just in Seasons 1-2.
The brain is really intelligent, but his intelligence is impractical. A lot of times very smart people lose sight of what is really important, or as I like to say: "They laughed at me when I said I'd take over the world, but I'll show them muhahaha." I met Liz Holzman, who was the animator for Pinky and the Brain. I met her randomly at a Saturday market. I was just sitting at a table, enjoying a crepe, and she decides to sit next to me out of the many empty chairs.
I didn't know who she was at first, but we chatted and made the usual small talk. I told her what I do for a living, and asked her in turn.
"I'm an animator." She said.
"Okay, anything I've ever heard of?" I asked, in between bites of crepe.
"Ever heard of Pinky and the Brain?"
I slapped the table, startling her a little, and shouted, "Shut up!"
Of course it was one of my favorite cartoons growing up, so I quickly turned into a fan boy. After our chance encounter she ended up meeting with some reporters, but wow!
She was sweet, and humble. She even autographed a doodle for me on an envelope. She passed away either that year or the year following. Really, she was quite extraordinary.

this theory is so plausible that it occurred to me as a kid after watching the episode where Pinky becomes president.
my theory back then was:
Brain is actually dumb because the humans, that are shown to be "dumb" in the series, are actually the smart ones and since Pinky acts just like the humans do, he is the smart one of them.

There is a flaw with the second episode observation. The reason brain's writing was sloppy was because he was writing with levers. Imagine trying to write your name with a car.
Also, the question pinky knew but brain didn't was for a tv show. So there is a hole to the theory.

I've been on board with this theory since I saw the Cracked video about the ACME universe. I honestly really don't understand why it only got a 4 considering how much this theory holds up, I honestly can't find any holes in this theory at all. They're genetically modified rodents and B.R.A.I.N was one of the program's failures (like the Animaniacs,) so they had to make Pinky to keep him under control. B.R.A.I.N isn't incompetent, but he is insane, and Pinky is a genius, but doesn't share B.R.A.I.N's narcissism, and since he was created by ACME Labs to keep B.R.A.I.N under control, he has no desire to take over the world or boast his intelligence, because he simply wasn't created that way. I reeeally don't understand why this theory didn't get a 5.

The genius is always the one that everyone else thinks is stupid. Most people are programmed to look at things in the exact same way. They are governed by popular opinion. The genius knows different. He looks past the propaganda and sees the truth. He realizes you have no control over the world.
Scientifically speaking we really have no definition for genius beyond having a certain iq. A lot of scientists even say that IQ tests and thus there scores aren't an entire accurate measure of intelligence they more measure how fast you can process information. In my view I believe genuis is something you do not something you are or have.

I actually think this has a wonderful message concerning intelligence and what it really means. Pinky definitely displays much higher emotional and social intelligence.
Pinky seems to genuinely like Brain despite his character flaws and often states taht his friendship with Brain is more important than goals Brain is persueing.
Pinky, like the audience enjoys the status quo. He likes hanging out with his friend everyday. While I don't think he actively sabotages Brains work in order to maintain this, it does seem like he will follow a flawed plan through purely for Brains sake.
Brain definitely believes he is intelligent, and has a large ego, but often overlooks details and won't take imput from others.
While these are traits we associate with the reclusive genius, they are also displayed in sociopaths and has become a stereotype of 'neckbeards' especially those who have nothing to back up their claims of enlightment but social isolation has caused them to believe they are above the 'cattle/sheeple' who are more conventionally successfull than them in real life.

I was watching Animaniacs (The show that made "Pinky and the Brain" before it got it's spin-off series) and it was a Pinky and the Brain episode. I was listening to "One is a genius, the other is insane," and thought, "Hmm.. The Brain DEFINITELY is insane, so that means Pinky is a genius." I definitely believe this theory.
Personally I think Brain's arrogance is his downfall because when you get arrogant you get over-confident and think you are always going to win and as a result you are so wrapped up in yourself that you become sloppy and that sloppiness becomes your fatal weakness and you end up failing as a result.
It's given away in the theme song. Pinky and the Brain, Pinky and the Brain, one is a genius (the first mentioned, being Pinky) the other's insane (the 2nd mentioned when naming off the duo.)

Brain certainly has better deduction skills seeing as he is the one that always formulates the plan with pinky only supplementing it with minor changes. The theory is flawed in that just because Brains plans ultimately fail it does not necessarily make him the dim wit - in addition to that in several episodes it becomes apparent that pinky is not competent with all the plans that brain formulates to the pre supposition that pinky always makes an observation of a flaw in brains plans is fallacious. And why the theory in and of itself is but a theory. As for Pinkys name preceding brains, well it sounds better.

It's amazing what viewing a show through a specific character's perspective can do.
Another point to make is that 'insanity' can be dictated through one trait. Trying the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Sure, each episode Brain's plans are different, but the concept is exactly the same, as you had said in the video. Every episode ever has the same premise, which means Brain keeps trying the same thing but fails every time.

Even something as simple as working out disproves that: you lift the same weight again and again, expecting different results, and eventually you do get them. More examples include practicing ANY ACTIVITY, with the intention of becoming better at it (not including obvious things like trying again and again to gain telekinesis).
Yonatan Gershon It depends on the activity really :/ with excising, listing a weight up and down over and over will work on your arm muscles, but not your leg muscles! Repeating the same technique of lifting weights won't impact the rest of your body and is the whole point I'm making, because trying to lift weights and expecting your legs to become stronger is a sign of insanity! It could be that Pinky simply acts stupid, or is some kind of savant that allows him to see the problem's with Brain's plans but can't express them coherently. Maybe he's trying to coax him away from world domination, so that they can live a life better suited for them.

I like the theory that they're both geniuses in their own right, but Brain is the only one commonly recognized as one because being gifted in logic and science is typically put on a higher pedestal than social and emotional intelligence (something pinky seems to excel at).

Just because Brain makes mistakes occasionally does not make him not a genius. He can build a robot suit and he’s a mouse. I’m pretty sure that’s enough proof to his intelligence. Being a genius doesn’t mean you know everything. The theme song suggests that only ONE is the genius. Brain might be a narcissist, but I’d still bet that he’s the genius.
The problem isn't that Pinky's the genius, and Brain's the idiot. It's that Brain is too self-absorbed to recognize obvious flaws in plans that he perceives as perfect simply because he devised them. The greatest flaw in any good plan is usually the most obvious one, but that's also what makes it the hardest to spot except by outside perspectives.

Whatever it is worth, the episode when Brain loses on the TV show is actually making a parody of an episode of the HoneyMooners (which was more or else the show Pinky was watching in the beginning of the episode). Ralph (from the HoneyMooners) was entered in some game show or something(I have not seen it, but my father told me about it)and had to guess the name to a tune. While practicing for the show his friend Norton would play different songs for him but before each song he'd play an intro jingle which irritated Ralph and made him lash out at him. In the end, the tune that would have won the entire game was the same intro tune that Norton kept playing. Like I said, this episode makes fun of the HoneyMooners.
Also Pinky knew Chicken Boo was a giant Chicken The Brain had no clue.
From the Pinky POV episode, we learn he's not crazy, he just has attention deficit disorder. The origin episode shows the scientists who genetically modified them saw Pinky as the success and Brain as the failure. Brain usually fails because his temper gets the better of him, and he self-sabotages himself in order to hurt Pinky (telling the subliminally hypnotized audience at the Grand Ol' Opry to forget about him while screaming at Pinky, tearing up the foreign aid check the US gov't gave him b/c Pinky used it for origami), or because he doesn't know something obvious (ie, Gold in Ft Knox is too heavy for mice to carry).
Meanwhile, every time Pinky is given a shot, he successfully takes over the world, including in the Animaniacs series finale.
Kinda forgot to mention that the show is called pinky AND the brain, indicating that pinky is the genius and brain is...well...the stupid one

There is no doubt that Brain was intelligent, but also too incompetent and up his own ass to truly be as rigorous in mind as Pinky can be. Basically, Brain can not see when he is wrong nor wants to accept when he is due to his over inflated ego. Pinky being more mentally rigorous, open-minded and with better foresight allows Pinky to better identify where Brain goes wrong.
Pinky really being the smart one is kinda the running gag of the show. Brain basically makes Rube-Goldberg machines to do very simple tasks that Pinky could've done more easily.

Pinky isn't hiding his intelligence, it's just being ignored by Brain because of his upbeat personality. If anything it also highlights the stereotype of fun loving people being stupid and the more serious people being intelligent.
I think there are sufficient holes in this theory to warrant it only getting a 4 out of 5. The biggest hole is primarily that Brain isn't actually stupid, and is in fact a genius. This can be evidenced by his superior vocabulary and that he regularly builds robot suits. Also, in the opening credits when they say "One is a genius, the other's insane", Pinky leaps past the screen in a straight jacket. Brain's real problem isn't stupidity but hubris, a blinding pride that causes him to overlook flaws in his plan that are obvious to someone like Pinky. Now, to the theory's benefit, Pinky is probably smarter than he lets on. It may be that Pinky sees the world for how truly ridiculous it actually is, and he mirrors his personality and his priorities to match that. That may be why he's more interested in how one would get pigs to break dance than he is with taking over the world.
There is also an episode where Brain remembers a moment he wants to prove his genius but failed to do anything and just bit the scientist on the nose while Pinky was declared smart by saying NARF.
The reason it happened is because Brain went into some sort of thinking tank and got locked in and went to his primal state. (So he made himself go insane)
Remember it was just a tank filled with water in the darkness.. Not some super machine.
The episode says they get a 2nd chance but the exact same thing happens.
THis is also BRAIN's drive to takeover the world since he was unable to show his intellect and wants to take over the world to prove his intellect and to be smarter then Pinky.

Yes Brain's flaw is mostly in simple problems Pinky has. Showing Brain has too big of an Ego to notice things but also.... he doesn't understand BASIC social skills.
When Brain did his own war of the worlds.. the whole world laughed at him seeing how bad it was and called it a comedy.

As for the constant failures, a part of me believes that Brain purposely sabotages their plans.
His entire goal in life is to conquer the world, if he succeeded, he'd have nothing else to do in his life, trying every night gives his life meaning, so failure is the only way to maintain that situation.
Actually, some people say that Pinky sabotages the plans for that same reason- he’s afraid that if Brain succeeds in taking over the world, he’ll lose his purpose in life and become unhappy.

I am in wholehearted agreement with this conclusion.
I can even see Pinky is a genius with the episode Pinky's POV. Despite it looking like random nonsense, it's Pinky's constant what ifs of the world, seeing endless possibilities. Not to mention, he does have a few profound questions every now and then.
Brain's signature on the Jeopardy podium is correct but stylized to look like it was signed by a fountain pen, with thicks and thins. The B is a profile of the human brain.
The Pinky and the Brain actually remind me of "Shutter Island" where you think the main character if trying to solve a murder in an asylum with his partner, but it turns out that the main character is insane and a patient of that asylum and his partner is actually his doctor. Maybe Pinky is the genius and is just watching the Brain and the reason he just goes along with the Brain's plans are because he knows they are going to fail. Just like the doctor/partner went along with the main character of Shutter Island.

This was one of the times Pinky was able to poke a HUGE hole in Brain's plan to take over the world. Brain would've magnetized the planet and caused everyone to get pinned down to the ground by the change in their pockets. When Pinky revealed this flaw, Brain responded:
"Um... then we'll have to take over the world QUICKLY!"
It was one of my favorite moments of the entire series, because it showed that Pinky wasn't dumb, and could outwit Brain, who was too egotistical to ever alter his plans.
I really can't find how any of this proves Pinky is a genius. In fact, some of these only disprove the theory even more. The Brain not writing good only proves he is basically a mouse with those tiny hands who can't hold a pen: If Pinky knew that answer and that makes him a genius, I'm sure he would of known to let a human write his name or the cover would be blown (Okay, it's a cartoon and I guess maybe mice can be on TV shows than, but than explain the point of Brain dressing as a human ?). If he can read, why doesn't he know how to keep the world after finally taking over it? Reading better than writing doesn't make you smarter. Thomas Edison for example had dyslexia. So did Lewis Carroll. But they did work as well as anyone who could read normally. Pinky reading may prove he is only smarter than we take him for. You'll have to explain the episode That Smarts about the machine. Even if I agreed on that one, maybe Brain could still be the genius and fail from listening to Pinky. I agree this is a good theory but it only sounds like the Beatles Abbey Road cover conspiracy where we see one odd thing, and we believe more. Any way, there is no way Pinky's a genius. I would argue that although The Brain's GOAL (taking over the world) remains the same, his methodology or attempts change and vary constantly. Brain never repeats an idea but always formulates a new plan. So saying that the definition of being insane by doing the same thing over and over expecting different results doesn't apply completely to The Brain! :)
My cousin told me this when I was little. I would say yes that Pinky is smart but it was a dumb move of him to hand over the world to Brain after he conquered it then Brain messes it up.

There's also an episode where Brain is talking to Pinky and has his back to him. Pinky is moving objects while waving his finger, Brain turns around and says "how are you doing that?!" Pinky says "oh it just comes and goes" all the objects fall to the floor.
I have always had the notion that it was Pinky who was the genius.
The title of the show is called Pinky and the Brain, and the theme song describes them as "One is a genius, the other's insane". The theme describes them in the order of the title, and Brain can be described as insane based on his thoughts on ruling the world.
From what i know of the show brain isn't evil, deep down he is good, and has at time gone up against truly evil bad guy.

There was an episode where Pinky controls some fruits with his mind. Brain sees it and ask WTF was that and Pinky says "this happens sometimes", so Brain is like "ok, let's keep up with the plan...".
They are both smart in their own way yet also insane in their own way... so no matter how you look at it, there is a genius and an insane mouse always present.

There was one where Pinky was secretly a genius that was sabotaging and/or distracting Brain from fatal flaws in his plans so he couldn't suceed. Lol, I guess this one was sorta confirmed a long time ago!
They did another one for Justice league with bleeps every other word to make it look like Batman and Robin were swearing up a storm on the Amazon Island.
I feel this should have gotten a 5 because during the opening theme song it clearly says " One is a Genius", while showing pinky, " and the other's insane" while showing brain making calculations. I'm 27 now and even as a child back then I could decipher the not so hidden truth that though he is nonchalant about a lot of things, Pinky was the smarter of the two.
To everyone saying the title of the show in addition to the lyrics automatically proves it, please consider the intro *animations* first. Brain is shown first and Pinky is seen bouncing around in a straight jacket at the mention of one of them being insane. I'm not saying the theory is wrong, only that we have reason to doubt it ... that said, this is one of the most plausible cartoon theories I've ever heard, even if it wasn't originally intended by the writers / animators.
After all, out of the two of them, Pinky understands pop-culture, art, music, knows how to read and write, can blend into society perfectly, was mistaken for a spiritual leader, has SUCCESSFULLY TAKEN OVER THE WORLD with absolutely no help from Brain, proved that Brain in the real reason their plans always failed--repeatedly--, and so on. Brain is very intelligent, yes, but he's clearly crazy. Just look at his plans for world domination. Pick any one of them and it sounds absurd.
The correct answer to me is most likely that they both are geniuses but with different flaws, Pinky is a genius but is crazy and seemingly ADHD, Brain is focused but extremely arrogant. Remember it's canon that the two's genes were spliced together, so it's possible that brain originally was a complete genius but pinky's genes messed with him, and pinky was just crazy, but brains genes made him subtly smart. Remember insanity isn't stupidity.

That makes no sense. If Pinky is insane, that means Brain is the genius, which completely contradicts the theory.

I'm surprised she didn't mention the opening theme song- "it's pinky and the brain, one is a genius, the other's insane" = pinky is the genius, brain is insane. If it were the other way around like we're lead to believe, it should list brain before pinky, or the second part should be vice versa, making it "pinky and the brain, one is insane and the other is a genius". I get that it doesn't rhyme or sound catchy at all, but that's the point--- I actually do believe this show was purposefully created in the way that it's relatively easy to see between the lines and realize the brain is actually named ironically, and pinky has the intellect.

What's boggling about this theory is how Pinky appears stupid but can do some of thing simplest things like reading and writing, but while Brain is coming up with ingenious plots he always assume its Pinky's fault and never considers what goes wrong expecting to succeed when he inevitably fails!

Just to make this clear. In that second episode of Animaniacs. Brain did spell his name right. Other wise it would be spelled or otherwise pronounced "Brian". However that was the joke that episode, saying his name wrong, even though he wrote it down correctly.
I get the idea that people equate the Brain with Gilligan or someone like him. Because the show leads you down that wide path. But if you step back, Pinky is not at fault often as memory serves. Brain blames him sometimes for things that weren't his fault. Pinky actually follows the Brain's directions for the most part. Sometimes literally. The Brain, presuming Pinky is dumb, doesn't bring him into the plan as an equal. He ignores any of Pinky's objections to the plan. He tells Pinky to do something in a demanding, paint by numbers way, Pinky carries out the instructions and the plan fails. I am curious if Pinky ever failed to carry out his directions when he was not prevented from doing so? He's not a Gilligan. As for Pinky being the genius, and the brain being insane, the video covers most of it. Other evidence is the...are you pondering statements. Perhaps Pinky sees associations other people don't see, a possible sign of genius. Also Pinky has amazing abilities, such as levitation that he only rarely uses. The argument against Pinky being a genius is his apparently lack of knowledge and mindless diversions. But you know, Pinky shows love for the Brain. Maybe Pinky pretends to be dumber than the brain as he feels that makes Brain happy.
I thinm this should get 5/5 for a few reasons:
1) we can take a look at the opening song, witch is honestly the only outward evidence to the agreement of witch is the genus. In the goes pinky and the brain, one is a genius, the others insane. Well you can line those up and tell me what you think. 2)what about pinky says he's insane? Yeah he acts like a goof but is that enough to be labeled insane? Especially whrn the other candidate who's hellbent on taking over the world to fulfill his own narcissistic agenda fits the bill a bit better. If anything else is thought provoking enough to leave you wondering who the real genius really is.
Nat 1) the explanation for the lyrics is that its suppose to rhyme. That’s like song writing 101. Also when that line is sung the animation shows pinky jumping around in a straight jacket, while brain is doing an equation. 2) there are multiple pieces of evidence that pinky is insane/dumb. 2a) in the episode pinky’s pov (point of view) we see how pinky views the world. In one scene he ends up seeing brain as hippopotamus and partially thinks he’s a hippopotamus for a second. 2b) kind of a nit pick, but pinky every night asks what they are going to do the next night. 2c) again in the intro, after the “one is a genius, the others insane” part we see an x ray of them and pinky has a brain the size of a walnut.

I've long thought the same thing about pinky being the smart one.
It's not really a theory that I've really seen been pointed at as a theory,
but The Walking Dead took the plot from The Toy Story films. They have almost the same exact plot, and it's pretty freaky. Seasons 3-5 of TWD aren't that similar, but maybe just in Seasons 1-2.

The brain is really intelligent, but his intelligence is impractical. A lot of times very smart people lose sight of what is really important, or as I like to say: "They laughed at me when I said I'd take over the world, but I'll show them muhahaha." Keeping things simple and practical often wins out over trying to achieve things that are so great as to be unachievable. 🎉❤
