  • NASA released images yesterday (9 May) of the planet Mercury making a rare “transit” across the surface of the sun; a phenomenon that occurs only 13 times in a century.
    The process takes about seven-and-a-half hours, with Mercury appearing as a black dot on the Sun's surface.

      jacob martinez - the sun orbits a common point with Jupiter actually, the only Sun-planet system where the center of mass is outside the radius of the sun. Otherwise, you’re correct, unless you consider its orbit around the Milky Way galaxy.
      The sun wobbles a lot due to solar system orbits, and it is traveling 220km/s around the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. It takes 230 million years to complete one orbit around the plane of the Milky Way, and we are only halfway out (8.5kpc or about 28,000 light years) from the center. Talk about size!

    From these images, it seems like if you were standing on Mercury's illuminated side, the Sun would take up the whole sky. In reality, the Sun's diameter is about 100 times smaller than the Sun's distance from Mercury, so the Sun would only occupy 4 degrees in the sky. Unfortunately, our eyes aren't great at perceiving astronomical distances b/c the parallax from far-away objects is small.

      We are getting destroyed everyday. The dangerous solar winds and flares penetrates our atmosphere everyday but thanks to the magnetic field around Earth that protects us from this..

    That just shows you how big the Sun is, to watch something the size of the CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES drift by a small pixel of it like a marble! Keep in mind, that ratio also applies to the Sun itself compared to other stars.

    How about a non cgi photo of earth nasa. All that technology and you can't snap a single photo of earth, shucks, it would probably be different just like all the rest, no not one is the same

    Mercury is the natural moon of God the Sun.
    "Our Father, unattainable by our knowledge, but existing, let your name be holy, let your law come, giving light to the world of stars and our lives. On this day, feed us with bread and forgive our mortal debts as we forgive them before heaven, but protect us from temptation and evil. "

      It seems close because both of them are very far from us to the point that they are both at infinity photographically.

    Fake

    • @luckykel2030
      @luckykel2030 5 лет назад +3

      Don't you think your computer or phone is fake too. Your car and television as well as everything invented by scientists are also fake. You need to relocate to some cave somewhere where things are not fake.
