    So, the passenger cars, two boxcars and the 2-8-0 consolidation (The locomotive) are all from the Virginia and Truckee which operates out of Carson City Nevada. The engine and cars are all accurate to the 1920's, with the engine herself being built in 1916 (She's still fully operational to this day on the V&T)

      Seeing photos of that is what got me initially interested in this movie. I read the book and all I'll say is it's an insane story. Martin Scorsese and the film makers collaborated with several members of the Osage to ensure they get the setting and story accurate. I'm looking forward to seeing the film!

    I, too, "crashed" the set of the film when I was - by complete happenstance - in Pawhuska in the summer of 2021. I was there to visit the Ben Johnson Cowboy Museum and visit Ben's grave in the local cemetery to film for the You Tube channel Hollywood Graveyard. The museum attendant informed me that filming was underway, so I sauntered down to main street to see what was going on. Saw that the streets were covered with dirt - which is what it likely was like in the 1920s - with antique cars running down the street, a director shouting commands to the crew, who were all masked up. Fascinated, I pulled out my video camera to take some footage, but it didn't take long for a woman - who was obviously part of the crew - to come over and tell me I couldn't film. Discretion being the better part of valor, I put my camera away. Neat experience being on a movie set, though. First time for me.

    Some information on the train:
    The locomotive and its three coaches came from the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in Virginia City, Nevada. #29 is a 2-8-0 Consolidation built by Baldwin in 1916 for the Longview, Portland, and Northern Railroad in Oregon; this had to have been the first time #29 had been out of Nevada since Bob Gray bought her at auction in 1977. She was the main power for the V&T from 1977 until 2001, when new Federal Railroad Administration regulations put into place following the Gettysburg Railroad boiler explosion in 1996 forced the railroad to completely replace her boiler. She returned to service in 2008, and is due to go back down again next year for another federally-mandated inspection (hopefully it won't be long, seeing as how the boiler is relatively new by railroad standards).
    The three coaches, meanwhile, were built by Pullman in the 1910s (101 "Gold Hill" and 102 "Silver City" were built in 1916, while 103 "Carson City" was built in 1914 as an electric multiple unit), all for the Delaware & Lackawanna Western Railroad. 101 and 102 were acquired in 2008, while 103 arrived in 2010. All three are used on the full-day trains from Mound House to Virginia City (there is also a shorter 35-minute train from Virginia City to Gold Hill that uses old Western Pacific equipment found on a siding in Reno in 1976).
    V&T equipment have a long and storied history of appearing in movies. Many locomotives and coaches from the original 1869-1950 V&T appeared in many, many westerns, as the V&T sold off older equipment to Desilu Studios in the 1930s to stay afloat. Every locomotive that was sold for movie work is now preserved.
    In terms of the modern V&T, they have three movie star locomotives. #29, of course, appears in this movie, McCloud #18, which was acquired by the V&T in 2005 (or rather, the state commission set up to reconstruct the railroad between Gold Hill and Mound House), appeared in the 2010 film Water for Elephants alongside Tennessee Valley Railroad #610, and one of the railroad's most recent acquisitions, Fillmore & Western #1059, was the diesel locomotive that destroyed the DeLorean in the third Back to the Future movie (another locomotive from that movie, Sierra Railway #3, is at Railtown 1897 Historic Park in Jamestown, California).

    Oklahoma has made a pretty significant investment in making the state attractive for film and television production. We visited Pawhuska a few weeks after filming wrapped and are looking forward to this film. The story is disturbing but one that needs to be told. When you return to Pawhuska for the "after" release video, you definitely need to eat at the Pioneer Woman's restaurant. I'm not much on celebrity chefs, but I have to admit she makes an incredible biscuit and pecan pie! Another thing to see if you have time, is drive up to the Tall Grass Prairie just outside Pawhuska where there are more bison roaming than I have seen anywhere else.

    New subscriber here. Of course the Twister video gained you subscribers. It’s a beloved film and you matched it up so well. In Pawhuska, will you be able to return to possible record them filming? From afar of course. That would be so cool. Also, I recommend the Historic Whiting Hotel Suites, for your next stay, if you return in the future. When we went in 2018, the owner was also offering tours of the town. It was a great tour. He talks about this book. I highly recommend it, if he’s still doing them. He’s a local and full of information. And, if I can, give some advise in your selections of movie locations, please don’t make it all male based genres. My favorite town to visit is Nacthitoches, Louisiana, where Steel Magnolias was filmed. I have family there. And locations of movies like Fried Green Tomatoes, or The Help would be awesome. Just to put a bug in ear. Thanks for sharing your work. Much appreciated.

    • @GoingtotheMovies
      @GoingtotheMovies  3 года назад +2

      Thank you! Unfortunately, we are about 10 hours away so we won’t get to visit while they’re filming. We will eventually go back to line the shots up when the movie is released, so we’ll probably use your recommendation on the hotel and try to get that tour. Also, I love your suggestions! Steel Magnolias has been on my list for a long time and the others are not too far from me!

      @@GoingtotheMovies the hotel was clean, spacious, very affordable, conveniently located, and staff was nice and accommodating. If you do go to Natchitoches I recommend Andre’s Riverview B&B. They don’t actually serve breakfast but it’s a nice place to stay on the river. Again conveniently located. Unless you can afford to stay at the Steel Magnolia House. I had planed to stay there, but then covid hit. Still plan to go in the future. Reese Witherspoon’s movie, Man In The Moon, was made there too. But you probably already knew that.

      you may be surprised on this one--have you seen the full trailer yet? Also, he's an actor who started young, but that doesn't negate the works he's done spanning the decades. I mean, Mickey Roonie is just one great example of another long-lived actor, and he was fabulous! I look forward to seeing LDC in this role. I thought he did well in Blood Diamond, though I know so many didn't enjoy the accent.
