Not to mention a really traumatic childhood filled with physical and sexual abuse, abandonment, mentally ill parent, etc. The woman just needs to be a peace period
The irony of them only seeing Marilyn as a Hollywood starlet isn't lost on me. They would do well to listen to "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John, but something tells me they would be too busy bashing Elton for being gay to bother listening to the track at all. I love and respect Marilyn not for her beauty and her acting talents -- although she obviously has those in spades -- but because she was human. She had to work so hard to be Marilyn, and that's the story that gets wafted aside in favor of telling a story of Marilyn that's all about sex, beauty, and fame. Anyway, my point is that Girl Defined can only see the surface meaning of all the subjects they talk about. And that's what pisses me off about Girl Defined -- and Evangelicals as a whole. If you can only understand things at a surface level, how the Hell am I supposed to take you seriously when you preach your Bible at me while completely missing the core message of your holy book?

(And yes, I did think I could choose at that age) And I had, for some reason, come to the thought that if I wanted to be a man, I would have to go to the military (it is compulsory in my country for all males), and if I wanted to be a woman, I would have to have children (carry them and birth them). I don’t know if you’ve ever touched on this subject Jen, but I have a friend in San Antonio that used to go to the same church as them. This was years ago. Apparently, someone in the church was getting divorced because of martial rape, and Bethy said that there was no such thing. She chastised this poor woman, saying that he probably left her, because she wasn’t performing her duties as a wife! It was disgusting! I almost choked on my coffee when she told me. Also, I will repeat this meme to Bethy’s face, my child is 100% safer with a drag queen than with any clergy!
So Drag queens are all safe for kids? I’ve seen some highly specialized Draq queen shoes that aren’t appropriate for children…& so ur saying all Clergy members are all predators? I see….I’m not vouching for either group of people…How about we just keep our kids with adults that we’ve vetted ourselves & deemed appropriate
Drag queen vs people literally brainwashed in a cult....yeah I wouldn't even hesitate when given the choice. My kid would have a blast with the drag queens and learn something potentially, they would be so weirded out by extremism which is what girl defined preaches.
My kids have attended a Drag Queen story time at our local library several times, and I’ve gotta say that I can’t think of a single sexualized element from any of those performances no matter how hard I try.
I don't think Christopher Rufo's cultists need any hard evidence to make themselves feel justified. Rufo gave DeSantis and Abbott the idea to make their governorships all about cis-het supremacy throughout the last year, coming fresh off Rufo's campaign to smear critical race theory as a danger to children.
It's almost like the narrative is built entirely on out-of-context clips and scenes from adult shows being attached to family-friendly shows where they never actually happened.

Back in the day, I used to follow an influencer much like Girl Defined. I was trying so hard to be a perfect little Christian, and it made me burn out. I started the long process of deconstructing and I still am deconstructing to this day. Ironically enough, even though I'm a hardcore agnostic, I still love Jesus and I have found so many other Christians (and non Christians!) who also love Jesus but are also feminist in nature. Eesh, it's so insidious how they say that Marylin Monroe's life ended tragically even though she had "everything" ... like, it was her own personal decision rather than the fact that she was so horribly treated and never treated like a person by the society we live in 😑 it's very telling tbh
Especially makes me angry considering their own ignorant approach to mental health and sexuality. We’re talking about a woman whose relationship to sex was virtually always about men projecting onto her, even when she tried to assert herself like a grown woman. Nothing more biblical than that.
While I don't think Bethy was scouted, my husband is a football coach for a public high school and has had homeschooled kids play on the team. Basically, they are allowed to try out for the after school sports/clubs at the public school they are districted in. He had one super religious homeschooler who did turn down a D1 scholarship because the kid didn't want to be that far from his church. It haunts my husband to this day that boy was handed an amazing chance at an education and turned it down with full support of his parents because of his religion.
With the sheer number of adult actresses discussing abuse from people like Harvey Weinstein and former child stars detailing abuse, don’t you think Jennette McCurdy or Rose McGowan could relate to Marylin Monroe more than Bethy can?
@Melissa McGregor I’ve noticed that too and it’s very sad in a way. These women are missing out on the opportunity to have true friendship and sisterhood with other women, because they assume women outside of their small circle wouldn’t understand their struggles or be able to relate to them. I think of how many of my female friends seem wildly different from me on the surface and wonder what I would be like if I had decided to never interact with them on the basis on them not being like me, and the image is really depressing; I wouldn’t have changed or grown at all.
@Melissa McGregor I was just thinking, they feel like teens rather than adults. But I don’t know if that’s because they’re targeting content for teens. Or maybe they’re targeting content to teens BECAUSE they can’t relate to other adults, especially outside fundamentalism. Watching these people is a never ending game of hating them and feeling sorry for them. Sometimes it feels like almost every person in a cult is both a perpetrator and a victim.
But if you can’t properly communicate (which I doubt she would), how can he be expected to be good? Like if it’s not what you want… just tell him what you want as opposed to trying to “retrain you body”
Talking like this just makes me sad as fuck. I've been with my partner for 13 years now and we aren't married which of course would give people like them a fucking heart attack but we also communicated our wants and needs from day one. Even though we met when we were 16/17.
I was deep in purity culture as a young person, and theres this whiplash that happens because the people leading purity culture movement preach “modesty” and yet talk extremely explicitly about their sex lives, their sin struggles, etc has always confused me. Like you said “you could not waterboard that information out of me” Dont get me wrong, i think talking about that highly personal stuff with a trusted friend or mentor is fine and healthy, but these women get up in front of thousands of people and talk about how their husbands cant make them c*m. I call it “parasocial group therapy” and it is rife in the evangelical christian world. I remember vividly being at christian college and hearing a woman literally sobbing her eyes out on stage talking about her past. For people that shove physical modesty down people’s throats, theres no nuance in how they speak, no boundaries in what they talk about, no sense of decorum or appropriate topics.
As a fellow Bethany, I'm SO glad you started calling her "Bethy" because whenever you use her full name I always get this split-second "uh-oh, Jen's mad at me 😰".

I find it very odd that a LOT of drag queens have spoken out about drag not being a space for children in general and yet... parents still bring their children and then are shocked when even "child friendly" is used very loosely. Don't take your children to drag events if you think that specific event is going to be too much. Obviously an event where a queen is just reading a book to children is unproblematic compared to a set that may include NSFW elements. Like, come on now.
I went to a conference once where these two girls spoke. They were still teenagers and it was supposed to be a mother/ daughter convention. It had to be well over 10 years ago. I remember thinking they were great and how they turned out exactly how my parents wished I would have been as a teen. Or probably even now. It’s is fascinating how one can be immersed into an environment and essentially trained to think a certain way while being unable to see how obviously dangerous the rhetoric actually is. Also… your makeup looks fabulous especially the sparkly eye shadow.
Why do these kinds of women spend so much time telling other women that they should just stay home and not pursue careers.... while they pursue their own sick, twisted "career"? Also, your eyeshadow is absolutely amazing. Great dance too lol

Girl Defined also typically likes to reinforce the idea of a very limited, very stereotypical appearance of men: in their discussions about trans people or drag queens they always use the examples of supertall men, with superbroad shoulders and obviously male body characteristics.... And while some of the people I know are not religious (and if they are, not to the level of Girl Defined), those ideas about masculinity and femininity when it comes to appearance are stubborn: as soon as they meet me (I'm a transfemale) they get completely confused, "Why are you so relatively short for someone born, like...ehm, well you know?" or "You have such small shoulders for a man..." It's really weird that people only realise that almost no one looks like their stereotypical idea of men and women, including themselves.
Christians like these women are hallow, superficial, empty, awkward, DRY and uncomfortable to be around. They lack tenderness, love, and acceptance. Them reading books to kids would be the most boring and dead show. Now a Drag Queen on the other hand, is fun, supportive, positive, accepting. Sooo, afaik Kody basically abandoned Meri, Christine said "fuck this shit" and divorced (not that they were legally married) and then Janelle joined the party as well and left. Good on them. I hope they find happiness in their independence.
From what I've read, Cody was the one to break up with Meri during the filming of a special (?), on camera. Apparently, he was having doubts about polygamy. Would love a video on this as well!

When GD were talking about buying wedding dress before finding the man, I grew up with girls who considered the last and least important wedding accessory was the GROOM. They paid heavily for that one in the years that followed.
That is pretty sad. I do get that someone who likes to plan out their life in advance and who knows their taste might be tempted to buy a dress in their early 20s without even being in a relationship, but I think you might set yourself up for failure if you do. Your body might change drastically, you might feel pressure to find someone and feel like a failure if haven't and your taste might simply change by the time you'd actually wear the dress.
@@naryainc when you grow up in a culture that only values married women or women with children, it becomes like the pinnacle of womanhood for them. I always thought Bethany was violently jealous of her sister for getting married first, which is why I think the purchase of the dress was also probably like a way to take a passive aggressive jab at her.
@@lacey892 I think Bethy was envious, not jealous. But I also think who wouldn't be at a young age. I at least used to wish I was married in my early 20s because life was hard on your own, but then again I'm really glad now that I didn't find anyone then because life would probably have been just as hard with a 20 year old husband. Although, I also have to admit that I admire how much fundie culture values mothers and married women, because the mainstream western culture sure as hell does not value motherhood. However, it's not okay that fundie mothers then parentify their own daughters instead of actually mothering their own kids.
@@naryainc It may seem like only non-western culture values motherhood, but if you want to encourage more women in the US to marry and have children, it has to be affordable, and you'd have to take that up with whoever made medical and child care costs so steep, just to start.

At pride this year this little girl (with her parents holding her) was handing out dollar bills to the queens doing lip syncs and it was just the cutest thing and the world didn't end!! Also you or James def should do an episode about Allie Beth Stuckey... she's something
I just hope you don't make excuses for people who are trying to break down the boundaries between adults expressing their sexuality and children, because that would be disgusting.

"Marilyn Monroe had everything a woman could dream of," yes like debilitating endometriosis pain and a lifelong struggle with infertility and miscarriage. Like jeez can everyone just leave Marilyn alone let the woman rest in peace rather than use her legacy for their own agenda?
Not to mention a really traumatic childhood filled with physical and sexual abuse, abandonment, mentally ill parent, etc. The woman just needs to be a peace period
I legit gasped when they used her story so blatantly like,.,,, wtaf ppl need to leave Marilyn alone already

Especially makes me angry considering their own ignorant approach to mental health and sexuality. We’re talking about a woman whose relationship to sex was virtually always about men projecting onto her, even when she tried to assert herself like a grown woman. Nothing more biblical than that.
and she was treated by men how they want all women to be treated by men. which isnt good. theyre just projecting

Yes.
@Melissa McGregor And they will be for life. Permanently undeveloped.

Like you said “you could not waterboard that information out of me”
Dont get me wrong, i think talking about that highly personal stuff with a trusted friend or mentor is fine and healthy, but these women get up in front of thousands of people and talk about how their husbands cant make them c*m.

It's so crazy that Kirsten can somehow just get so close to crossing into non-fundie territory and then she swings back in the hardest ways, i.e. being transphobic. You know that she definitely has random thoughts sometimes about her own identity and purpose and then she blinks and she's back to being ofZack. Also you can tell she never goes downtown or she would be eaten uuuup by San Antonio's Queens.

I don’t know what we did to be graced with this incredible makeup look AND more Girl Defined snark, but I’m feeling truly blessed.
I love the choice of lip color with the bright green.
Fun fact: I'm not American, was visiting my friend in Texas, we walked into an Altar'd State because it looked like it had cute clothes, only to be jump-scared by an employee when we got far enough into the store to realize everything in the home goods section had bible quotes on it 😂
That’s like walking into what you think is Hot Topic and ending up in Spencer’s. 😂 (For those who don’t know, Hot Topic is a store that sold black clothes and goth accessories to emo teens in malls in the 2000s while Spencer’s was a sex toy store that looked similar to Hot Topic, often confusing teens who just wanted a My Chemical Romance t-shirt and weren’t quite ready to buy a dildo just yet. Lol)
I loved the clothing at altered state and the clothes are so cute if you aren't on the hefty side. My favorite part of going to the store, was taking my very atheist boyfriend and making bible jokes at the store. Despite the fact that we were being fucking rude and are a mixed race couple in a town that isn't that representative of us, everyone was really nice. Still wish I could fit those clothes, and ironically carry around bible quoting totes. It was a christian hippy wonderland and I lived for it.
I went to Alter’d States website and burned my fingers on the prices! Worse, way too many crop top styles and other things that would have a Texas 16y.o dress coded at school! C’mon now! I’m not paying $60 bucks for a shirt!
@@joyceneville9214 i gotta be honest tho put on their clothes and it is sooo soft. Lol . I mean some of their stuff not worth the price but the jackets, cardigans , sweaters are amazing lol.

Girl Defined is really out here saying drag queens are harming children by being "oversexualized" and "predatory" when child beauty pageants are literally right there
I honestly think you can make a compelling case for both being oversexualized and predatory.
They can't see it 🤌

@@FanyLI Exactly! Drag queen events are strictly 4 adults (imo) & that’s ok! & child beauty pageants are horrible also!!

I have never seen two sisters who look more uncomfortable with each other. The awkward laughter, the nods and the uptight facial features.
They nearly look like one of them is going to scratch each others eyes out. 🤣
I definitely get the impression they can't stand each other, too, esp with the constant shade they throw at one another lol. It wouldn't be surprising if it came out that they only "tolerate" each other on camera, and are worse off camera.
God I hope it's caught on video when bethy finally snaps
They are sisters??? Yikes yeah they don’t give sister vibes wow
They sort of look the same but different at the same time? I think they just look like generic bigoted american blonde woman to my foreign eyes.
Sister relationships are rough sometimes. But when you put money into it… a nightmare if y’all are not tight like that. I’m repairing my relationship to my sister but you couldn’t paaayyyy me to get in such a public business with her when I can’t just walk away. Lmao I’ll drive myself to where we go just so I can walk out when I need to. So I can empathize, but babes it was a choice.
These two are the mean girls I had to deal with my whole childhood in the stupid mega church I was forced to attend. It’s so clear exactly who they are. Thanks for this breakdown!!
We really need the Fundie Fridays/Trixie Mattel collab video. Even if it's just putting on makeup or making toast.
Or putting makeup on toast 🤔
@@radbuffman3487 There was a trend of putting makeup on eggs so why not toast?
I find it very odd that a LOT of drag queens have spoken out about drag not being a space for children in general and yet... parents still bring their children and then are shocked when even "child friendly" is used very loosely. Don't take your children to drag events if you think that specific event is going to be too much. Obviously an event where a queen is just reading a book to children is unproblematic compared to a set that may include NSFW elements. Like, come on now.
This. They’re are a lot of drag shows that will tell you that it is 18+. So don’t bring your child that is not an adult. It’s not complicated yall
What rhetoric of theirs do you consider to be dangerous?
Why do these kinds of women spend so much time telling other women that they should just stay home and not pursue careers.... while they pursue their own sick, twisted "career"? Also, your eyeshadow is absolutely amazing. Great dance too lol
Sometimes it feels that it's OK if you do it from the home...
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT ALTARD STATE! As someone from their town when I found out the store was selling their books I was not shocked but super disappointed… I will never shop there ever
I didn’t know they existed. And now I know where not to shop.
As someone who thrifts, shops at local stores, sometimes goes to Anthropologie/Free People (when they got sales going on), walking into an Altar'd State is like walking into a Boho Bizzaro World. It's unsettling 😱
@@rachel_sj Yeah, I saw that storefront in the video and immediately said, “oh, they’re biting off Anthropologie.”
@@manderly33 I think the only reason Altar'd State confuses me is because, compared to past Christian Goods Stores and Bookstores, they're a carbon copy (albeit a bit boring and uninspiring) compared to Anthro/Free People
Growing up,I remember the only Christian Clothing options being oversized, tacky T-shirts and baseball caps, with Bible covers as the ultimate accessory.
I still kick myself thinking about when my sister and I walked into one at a mall a couple of years ago, but, I'll admit, I sometimes go onto their site to see what kind of clothing and items they sell, just outta morbid curiousity.
Oh, they also have a Bridal store called Vow'd too and the same sentiments apply to that branch too...
Those blurry shots of their waists, legs, and feet are so inspiring.
I once saw a drag queen dress up as Dobby the elf😂…..although I guess that would be extra horrifying to them
I don't know why, but these two saying "what does that mean for everyday average girls like us?" While being very conspicuously well-off, blonde Christian youtubers/published authors in full makeup and Sunday clothes shooting a video on several thousand dollars' worth of video equipment made me laugh out loud.
Did someone forget to tell these two that adult siblings who hate each other are allowed to avoid each other at all times of the year except the holidays? Did their fundie community neglect to give them that memo?
They're kinda financially dependent on their brand ie each other, are they not?
A big part of them seeming like they've had enough of each other might be that they are basically co-workers who have to spend a lot of time on their job together, so that could really add up over the years.

I’m going to say this the nicest way I can. Bethy strikes me as resentful of Kristen. I get the impression Kristen is favored by their parents and community higher than Bethy mainly bc of appearance. Girl Defined also typically likes to reinforce the idea of a very limited, very stereotypical appearance of men: in their discussions about trans people or drag queens they always use the examples of supertall men, with superbroad shoulders and obviously male body characteristics....
And while some of the people I know are not religious (and if they are, not to the level of Girl Defined), those ideas about masculinity and femininity when it comes to appearance are stubborn: as soon as they meet me (I'm a transfemale) they get completely confused, "Why are you so relatively short for someone born, like...ehm, well you know?" or "You have such small shoulders for a man..."
It's really weird that people only realise that almost no one looks like their stereotypical idea of men and women, including themselves.
You genuinely feel loved and you feel the warmth from drag queens. And they are FUNNY!! Like hands down, kids will have a better time with drag queens instead of 2 dried up shallow witches who lack depth and especially warmth.
@@Dutch3DMaster definitely! Like my boyfriend is 6'3" and very hairy, but otherwise, he doesn't have other traditionally masculine physical traits. If you shaved him and removed the very prominent Adam's apple, he'd just look like a tall, thin woman. He doesn't have broad shoulders or a sharp jawline. He has soft facial features and a relatively undefined frame, not a masculine or feminine build/body shape. He also has super, super long eyelashes naturally, so if you shaved his facial hair off and looked at only his face, you'd probably think he was a woman with his soft face shape and soft eyes. Most people have a mixture of "masculine" and "feminine" body traits.

When GD were talking about buying wedding dress before finding the man, I grew up with girls who considered the last and least important wedding accessory was the GROOM. They paid heavily for that one in the years that followed.
I was going to say, she needed to find a husband to match that dress:O
@@naryainc It may seem like only non-western culture values motherhood, but if you want to encourage more women in the US to marry and have children, it has to be affordable, and you'd have to take that up with whoever made medical and child care costs so steep, just to start.
