Till this day this is still one of the best segments in martial art movies. Fight after fight, each one is super well designed and choreographed, showcased a variety of styles, and told stories and intentions behind each move. The fact that they did all this WITHOUT involving the main character is even more impressive.
Plus each opponent/master he’s facing each becomes more challenging than the next based on how long it takes to beat said master.
Chinese novels often use this trick to create a super powerful character first. Then easily defeated by the protagonist. The protagonist is more powerful than the others。
The fight with IP was pretty sweet as well. I'm very disappointed he didn't have much to do in the sequel.
@argumemnon I was kinda hoping fan in sequel would of been one to also challenge twister as well even if he lost or could of been the one to die instead of hung. I loved his story of how he decided to be good though.
If you like this you should watch Fighter In The Wind as well. Awesome martial art film
I love how despite being skilled, he overwhelms his oponents with a certain wildness that comes from hardened life. something you don't learn in a safe dojo environment
It also shows how learning martial arts in a vacuum is detrimental as a whole. It relies on knowing the kinds of moves that your opponent is willing to use to counter them instead of figuring out the optimal way of restraining your opponent. Most martial arts are not able to be used to restrain a fully uncooperative individual. That is why these masters lost. Not because they weren't trained well, but because they haven't been able to effectively test their techniques in real world simulations against an opponent who is willing to break honour and tradition to win a fight by any means.
Right, same way MMA fighters regularly beat classic martial artists
Nah. He wins because its a movie 🙄
@@yogoo0 he didnt really break honour he did break tradition tho, he was wanting to seriously hurt them but he wasnt cheating tho
What are you talking about? Kung fu isn’t real lol

I like the music queue when Jin gets in his stance. It really lets you know he’s not only going to win, but win by a large margin.
Why do I get the feeling you eat caviar 😂
@@PeopleRTheProblem too bad he is an extra co star in the second episode, when more can be done with him, such as making him fight twister (the late Darren Shahlavi) and of course eventually losing to him.
I’ve always love the third master’s fighting style. He takes hits for the chance at landing hits. Very high risk high reward.
And after the last kick man was flying😂
It did look like he was the closest one to defeat Jin Shan Zhao
@@marlom7882 I think he would’ve won his style emphasizes a lot of throws
He was good, but his weakness was throwing techniques as they left him wide open
He did land quite a few blows and lasted the longest. I think he was second to Ip Man in Fo Shan, though the gap was huge.
The face he made at 3:26 when fighting Master Liu seems as if he's saying "Finally someone who at least knows what he's doing"
Fan Siu Wong needs to be the star in more fighting movies. Aside from Donnie Yen this guy is underrated af
LOL! That actor looked like a comedic idiot in the trash copy movie of Wolf Warrior that is Wolves Action
Fan Siu Wong is famous in fighting series in Hong Kong. Lots of action in his martial art series.
He’s like the funniest king fu actor
Also, how is Donnie Yen underrated? This movie series, alone, is well known.
is fan siu wong ricky?
I really love the Northerner's character, he's boastful but he's respectful where it counts.
He's not straight up harrassing the dojos like in most old kung fu films, he's talking to them first. And gives the masters proper form so that they can fight fair.
He did nothing wrong. He just didn't realize that in Foshan, challenging another master in public is against local customs. To ensure that both sides can save their faces, you should ask for a private "closed door training", as Master Liao did in the beginning.
i kinda found him as a bully in the first one. ABSOLUTELY loved him in the second. his change when he saw ip man in the fish market was hilarious
@@sadbucket233 That 'oh shit it's him' moment xD

"You were trying to really hurt me"
After he wacks him with blunt side of sword.
His youthful arrogance cost him hearing in his left ear but dude earned IPmans respect!
That master is the one who chose a sharp weapon
What he said actually loosely translate into "You're really actually wanted to cut/slice me?"
Then you realised fan siu-wong's character is using the back of his sword while the second master is using the sharp bit of the blade every swing

The best thing i really like about Ip Man is when one side speaks Mandarin, while the other side speaks Cantonese, they both understand each other without needing any translation.
Because Northern chinese people speak Mandarin, and south mostly speak Cantonese.
@@wimpieyuwono2550fan siu wong speak cantonese so I don’t know why he play a northern here

I really love how this scene shows variety of martial arts, including the ones that teaches how to use weapons. This is in fact quite realistic description of Chinese martial arts sicne many of them were designed to train both unarmed moves and armed moves at the same time. Which is also quite a shame that we don't really get to see many of those skills properly passed down until today. We do not really need to use weapons of that time nowadays tho, the beauty and variety of martial arts must continue to be passed down and be respected.
Most of Chinese martial arts are secrets limited to certain families or schools. So, unless you're a member of those families or a student of those schools, you are not allowed to learn them at all. It's because Chinese have a very strict code of not sharing or teaching their cultures to outsiders especially martial arts that are meant to be a family secret or school's secrets. Of course, there was Bruce Lee, one of the Chinese who openly introduced Kung Fu to the world and he even opened Wing Chun Schools that accepts Westerners as students which is why he had so many troubles with Chinese community in the States, the community that generally dabbles in martial arts.
@@joshuaamadeusishak1887 Does that mean there are dozens, even hundreds, of other martial arts out there we are unaware of?
@@Petey0707 Well, i don't know about other countries but there are supposedly over 400 styles of kung fu and most of them are still not known worldwide or even taught to outsiders. This came from the fact that most Chinese in the past and maybe even now are close minded in sharing the knowledge of Kung Fu to non-Chinese which was their country's cultural treasure. Also, in the time of war, keeping them a secret can let them survive for a long time in a real battle since the opponents would be overwhelmed fighting against an opponent with an unknown fighting style.
@@joshuaamadeusishak1887 Very interesting, thank you for sharing!
@@joshuaamadeusishak1887 chinese martials arts are weapon based, so if you remove the weapon you lose almost 50% of its effectiveness.
The fact that the second dude had a literal pole arm and decided to engage in close quarters.
Tbh,it's already a mistake to bring it in the first place, due to limited space,so the short range weapon gets the upper hand
A few gentlemen from Reddit I see.
he obvisouly never played Dark Souls.
But traditional Chinese crescent blade which is what that guy was wielding, have moves designed for close quater combat. It has higher demand for skills as well as physical stamina for the wielder to match short weapon though.
The Guandao has some styles that are for close quarters
That smile in 3:25. You can tell he isn’t just a hardened bandit. He genuinely enjoys the martial aspect of kung fu. He loves to fight and beat people.
There was a different translated version of him leaving when I first watched. Something along the lines of ‘can no one in Fosha fight??’ as if he was genuinely frustrated.
Mans was just looking for a challenge.
Unrelated but Fan Siu Wong's outfit is pretty cool, like a rugged thug kung fu fit.
Still one of my favourite Ip Man movie outfits, I've been dreamin' about wearing it every time, hahaha.
that's why the first master called him a country bumpkin because since this movie takes place in teh 1935-1937 you had to be from the northern plains and quite poor to wear that kind of outfit. if you look at the foshan masters their wardrobe would be actually time appropriate for chinese people tha still wanted to wear chinese clothing. it was a weird period where you had like a 50/50 split between chinese people wearing western clothing and manchurian chinese clothing. but the outfit you see ip man wear the long style manchurian chinese robe even then when ip man was 42 that style of robe was for old men by that point in time. pretty much the hip people wore western clothing lol
Same. This look combined with his style is one of my absolute favorites.

Lol the way he tried to get up and he knocked him down immediately was great
I know that he is the villain but when I watched this before, I never got that villainish vibes from him. It was the masters who was arrogant towards him and that possibly made him pissed. Even at the beginning, he was humbly introducing himself and mentioned his intentions (if the translations were accurate) and was just looked down by the 1st master.
Jin Shanzhao is a great example of the difference between an antagonist and a villain.
Uh yeah but then he literally tries to cheap shot kill IP man with a sword in the middle of a fight.
he was not a villain just a misguided fellow student of martial arts and the IP man was just there to put him on the right path the fight was pretty badass eh?
This makes sense because by the time he got to Master Ip he was annoyed and came off rude. Sucks because Ip was polite.
the southerners were reaaaaally arrogant and have a thing against northerners. I was glad he whooped all their asses
The second one was so bad despite having the better weapon and longer reach he still engaged in close quarters
First and second got defeated in few kicks by japanese general at once
Its more like his style only relied on attacking and defending with the weapon (i assume it's something similiar to naginata but idk the name)

The fight scenes in Ip Man are legendary
One thing I appreciate in this movie is that the styles are consistent. Later in the movie, we've seen some of these masters' students in fights and they have the same stances and moves. Even Master Liao successfully landed his weird back throw on one of the black belts.
Dammit, Psy lost.
He didn't do his special Gangnam Style move.

this man's fighting style is really good, although until he faced ip man
Ahhhhhhh man this movie is awesome. Easily my favorite martial arts movie next to enter the dragon. Great story, well written characters you care about, actually believable fights that aren't too over the top, fantastic choreography, perfectly mixed soundtrack...all in a freaking Kung fu movie. It's just *mwah, perfection.
One of my favorite scenes in IP man, I’ve watched it so many times. This actor is so talented a beast but very funny at the same time.
I'm not a martial arts student present or past but this is impressive. To fight using every limb of the human body and at this speed and close quarter commands my utmost respect to all of you reading this who is skilled in the martial arts!!
the fact master liu was able to land a few hits on this guy and Ip man defeated liu without getting hit goes to show that you already know that Ip man can beat Jin

I love when Northerners speak Mandarin and Southerners speak Cantonese in Chinese movies. Seen this happen a few times and it's pretty awesome they do that. The strange part is how they understand each other, which ends up being pretty cool anyway.
It's like Italian and Spanish understanding each other
@@Moses_VII are there movies in which one person speaks Spanish to an Italian person, and the Italian person responds in Italian such that they continue the convo speaking two diff languages? I remember in the Incredibles, Bomb Voyage and Mr. Incredible have a French and English exchange.

Most Cantonese speakers understand mandarin, and anyone of the time that frequently travels around the country usually picks up a key dialect or two, it was common. This is still common today
His fight scene look more interesting than IP man, can rewatch many times
He become main if there is no ip man
The northern Chinese challenger is truly a marvelous fighter. His punching and kicking technique are superb. He may be able to beat a Black Belt of 8th Degree.
well too bad he got owned by ip man. it would've been cooler if he at least landed a hit on ip man. but if the northerner were to run the gauntlet of black belts later in the film he might be able to take 3-4 black belts.
From cinematic point of view its impressive: angles, closeup, camera movement, sound effects, soundtrack, exceptional wire works (as usual).

@@RiderBreaker thus no kicking or risk disqualification in the match with twister in the second episode, but IP man still managed to pull off an impressive victory 🙌.
Different styles of martial arts contain different varieties of what you allow yourself to do. Some make you use your lower body more than your upper or it could be the opposite. Maybe your style is more defensive or offensive. One could make you quick with punches making it more of a quantitive punch rather than quality of the punch.
Think of it as your personality. Everyone is unique and so does a style of martial arts. Some people even mix two or more martial arts together and combine them to make a quite unique style depending on how much is affected (it could be 30% wing chun and 70% Muay Thai)

I always wondered what martial arts style that Jin Shan Zhao is using during the film?
Jin uses the Northern Shaolin style, characterized by his long-distance attacks and having a wide variety of kicks. The style focuses on the speed and explosive power of their attacks, using fists, palms, elbows, knees, kicks from all angles, sweeps, holds, takedowns and locks. It is one of the most complete and effective styles of Kung Fu, and also quite old, Chuck Norris actually approved it.

Very underrated actor, still cant believe hes the dweeby kid in Yuen Biao's Above the Law. I also think they shouldn't have maintained seriousness in his character as he played the role very well and looked the part as a dangerous villian. Hes somewhat reminiscent of Akuma in Street Fighter
The fights are amazing and the music i great I wish they had all of the movies music full songs all of them
I remember a scene from the Last Samurai where Tom is training kendo with the other Samurais and the son of Nobunaga tells him "Too much mind", Tom couldn't understand him at first but then he realized his mind was all ocer the place, only when he calmed his spirit and let things flow he was able to fight better. This is exactly that!!, the first Kung Fu master was super uncomfortable and acted cocky to "impress", his students, things got worse for the rest since they saw this guy was no joke. The only one able to defeat him was Master Ip. Why?, obviously he was way better but also, he had a more calm approach, a completely free mind. Amazing detail!!
Whats a neat detail that may be lost for those who do not know any chinese topolect is that Master Jin is speaking completely in mandarin (with a received accent at that), whereas his opponents were speaking in cantonese (which given the location makes sense). Its pretty surprising how they can communicate, but it is nonetheless a detail i wish more movies (esp one that takes place in china) would focus on.

From this video, I can surmise that a Kung fu master should have the following skills
1. Weapon training

3. Kicking and jumping
Ip man has full mastery over all three categories. This was why in the boxer match against Twister, he was able to overwhelm Twister without having to use legs, because his fist training was already that good.
fun fact ,there is no high kick in wing chun, lol
@@allthingsnerdy5474 I am saying Kung fu master not wing Chun. Ip man may be a Wing Chun practitioner but he seems open minded enough to adapt other fighting styles into his arsenal. One example was that he used the fat, old master technique in defeating Twister.
@IronChariot601 exactly, Ip Man took Wing Chun and took out stuff that wasn't necessary or was less practical. One thing he doesn't go for the eye gouge until he fights Cheung Tin Chi, which also shows that he views it as a dirty move and would rather fight fair. This also shows that Ip would rather switch the moves around instead of repeating a pattern too much, the only reason Cheung Tin Chi's eye gouge worked is because he kept spamming it in his patterns.
@allthingsnerdy5474 Ip Man loved high kicks in real life which gave him alot of ontrovercies from his fellow Wing Chun practitioners at the time.
