*Unfortunately for most RUclips viewers, you really need to be viewing these shots in 4K or 8K resolution in order to really appreciate the greatly increased exposure latitude and colour information the red Digital Cinema Cameras deliver in 16 Bit.* Viewing anything under 4K results in youtube *totally crushing most of the highlight and black information in the picture,* so the footage looks not all that great. In HD the footage *looks like it has a slight milky white fog over the images, but once you go higher that all goes away, and you can see what's really there on youtube.* Also, this Dude didn't help us out very much by what, or the way he shot this footage. Stop shooting into the Sun like that ! It goes to show you can be really proud of having the best camera equipment in the world, but possessing it is no substitute for visual talent and ability to use great composition.
I’ll only shoot 8K if I get it in a prosumer camera body under $3,000 - $4000 and when I need to upgrade. The GH5 - Open Gate 5K (w/Metabones x64), Sony A7S II, or a Black Magic Camera are MORE than enough. At this point, unless you’re a major motion picture studio, you don’t need that kind of resolution. Even watching this footage on a 50inch 4K up close (around 2-3 feet from the screen), I don’t see any difference from the aforementioned cameras. Especially with a slew of new LUTs our now - such as that GHAlex LUT that I use on both GH5 as well as the A7S II (shoot Cine4 and reduce saturation to 85% in Creative Color section). This isn’t to knock those who have this camera - more power to you. But don’t screw up your credit or bank account for a look you can achieve on a camera that’s 85-90% less in price. It won’t make you the next Spielberg, Nolan, or Abrams. Most content is streamed. And even if it’s streamed in 4K, you REALLY can’t tell the difference from the smaller end cams to bigger end cameras. Studios need to use them because there are a ton of other high end components and attachments needed for what they’re doing. I was in Miami and I saw a 20+ year old kid (I’m in my 40s) with a $25,000 $50,000 Red Camera... Shooting flowers. He does weddings, events, and B cam on indies. He’ll be working a whole 2-3 years before he sees any profit. He looked happy so... But they keep pushing these $25K-$50K to naive kids who buy them excitedly, and after shooting an indie that winds up on RUclips Or Vimeo, they realize they’re in deep debt. Then the cams wind up on EBay.
I mean the only reason now to shoot at these resolutions is for post-production so as to deliver at something like 4k, it's why I think alot of these cameras come with sensor aspect ratios taller or wider than 16:9 so you can crop in post.
@@inverse2 With film, you're at the peak, you can scan at 8k if you want, so I don't know what you're on since its probably why people look at resolution as an indicator of future-proofing.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the ergonomics of the Ranger, how does the weight compare to a normal DSMC2 body with minimal setup? What about the large top handle, is it much easier to use than the shorter ones? Also, will you be doing a video testing the quality of the XLR input? Thanks for the footage, it looks as nice as always with RED cameras, even in 4K.
Yeah, I'm actually working on a Ranger Q and A video and cover that exact thing you're asking about. That video will go up later this week Thursday or Friday.
Hi guys, thanks for the video. Do you remember the crop when shooting slow motion? what were your settings for the slow-motion bits in your video? no 8k, am I right? that's 4k? what kind of settings? =) appreciate your help!
@@kierstencoleman5768 Hi Kiersten, I have heard of that - I've heard of all the tech terms.. @@plastique45 Hey Art, I agree - Arri does make a superior product that gives a better image, thats why I bought a Mini LF and I shoot with that - Red has not gotten to Arri quality yet- but they are making strides towards it.
It would probably only work on a ronin 2 or Movi XL depending on the lens. If you want to put it one the gimabl I would go with the DSMC 2 Monstro VV thats the same image quality but in the modular body style.
Why do people go with sigma lenses? THey are just sharp. Sharpness is not an important characteristic when shooting High resolutions. Best lenses in my opinion are still classic Zeiss distagon. They have less glass in the body giving your subjects a more 3dimensional rendition instead of flat but sharp. Objects in front of objects look as if there is a spacial difference for a more 3dpop for static shots.
